Usually, yes—but returning or cancelling the purchase does not necessarily close the EMI automatically, and early repayment may carry charges. For credit-card EMI purchases in India, contact the card issuer to request cancellation after a refund or to ask for a foreclosure quote. Confirm the amount due, fees and taxes, and how any merchant-funded discount or cashback will be handled before paying.
First, distinguish the purchase refund from the EMI
A cancelled order or returned item and the financing booked against it are separate matters. A merchant refund may reach the card account without automatically closing the EMI facility. Federal Bank directs cardholders who receive a full merchant refund to contact customer care, while YES BANK says customers must call about an Instant EMI transaction that is cancelled or fully or partially refunded.

Once the refund is reflected, ask the issuer to cancel the EMI and confirm that the request has been processed. Keep the merchant’s refund record and the issuer’s request reference. If the financing is a separate consumer loan rather than a credit-card EMI, check that loan’s own agreement and prepayment terms; card-EMI rules should not be assumed to apply.

Can you pay the EMI off early?
Issuers commonly call early closure foreclosure or pre-closure. It may require a direct request to customer care, and the issuer may charge a foreclosure fee plus applicable tax. Ask for a dated payoff quote and its itemised charge breakdown before paying.

Do not assume that paying extra into the card account closes future instalments. Federal Bank says an excess card payment may create a credit balance rather than being applied to unbilled EMI instalments; its terms say to request full foreclosure through customer care. YES BANK also describes pre-closure as a customer-care process involving payment of the full outstanding amount and foreclosure fee.
Cancellation windows and issuer examples
Deadlines and charges depend on the issuer and the type of EMI. The examples below are from official issuer documents checked on 4 October 2026; they are not universal rules. Terms can change, so verify the current terms and those applicable to your account.

Why “no-cost” may still involve costs
“No-cost EMI” does not by itself guarantee that cancellation, early closure or every related fee will cost nothing. YES BANK’s agreement says certain merchant or manufacturer no-cost offers are funded through a discount or cashback equal to the interest subvented by the merchant or brand. It also says an EMI associated with a discount, cashback, merchant subvention, promotional pricing or another offer may not be eligible for cancellation without foreclosure charges.

Ask the issuer how a refund or early closure affects the offer: for example, whether a discount or cashback will be reversed, adjusted or affect cancellation eligibility. The answer depends on the specific offer and account terms.
What to ask customer care before you act
- Has the merchant refund reached the issuer, and do I need to make a separate EMI cancellation request?
- Is this Merchant or Instant EMI, or a post-purchase Transaction EMI conversion?
- What are the remaining principal, exact foreclosure fee and applicable tax as of the payoff date?
- Will any processing fee, interest or conversion charge be reversed?
- Does an instant discount, cashback or merchant subvention affect cancellation eligibility or the amount I owe?
- When should the EMI stop appearing, and how will amounts already billed or paid be credited?
Save the refund confirmation, EMI reference, customer-care request number and written confirmation of the issuer’s decision.

Do not confuse card EMI with a term loan
Rules for prepaying a separate loan are not automatically rules for a credit-card EMI. Central Bank of India, for example, publishes no-prepayment-charge provisions for specified non-business loans to individuals, but those provisions concern the specified loan categories.
