Yes—but only if “build” means improving equipment you already own. A working television can become a more convenient, clearer-sounding movie setup for under $150 with a compact soundbar that also streams video. Starting with no display, no audio system and no playback source, however, is not a dependable under-$150 project. A projector, screen, sound system and content source are separate parts, and the budget usually runs out before they are all covered.
What $150 can realistically buy
The useful distinction is between an upgrade budget and a complete-system budget. If you already have a television that works, the money can target the component causing the most frustration: difficult dialogue, obsolete streaming apps or awkward headphone listening. An all-in-one soundbar/streamer addresses two of those problems in one box.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
If you are starting from zero, the same $150 must cover a display, audio, a way to play content and the cables or adapters that make them work together. None of the available evidence establishes a dependable bill of materials for that complete system at this price. The practical goal should therefore be “make movie night better with what I own,” not “recreate a cinema from scratch.”
Inventory your existing gear before spending
Write down what is already usable. This prevents buying a component that duplicates something you have while leaving the real bottleneck unsolved.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Display: Is the television or monitor reliable, large enough for your room and equipped with a usable HDMI input? A projector only helps if you also have a suitable wall or screen and can control room light.
- Audio: Does the TV have acceptable speakers, an optical output, HDMI ARC/eARC, Bluetooth, or a headphone jack? Existing powered speakers or headphones may be enough for a targeted improvement.
- Playback: Can the display run the services you use, or do you need a streaming player? Check your internet connection and account access separately from the hardware.
- Placement and power: Identify an outlet near the display, a stable shelf or wall location, and a cable route that will not create a trip hazard.
- Accessories: Count HDMI, optical and power cables. A product may include setup items, but do not assume it includes every cable or adapter your particular television requires.
After this inventory, name one first bottleneck. If the picture is fine but voices are muffled and streaming is outdated, audio plus streaming is the efficient target. If the screen itself is missing or unusable, $150 is not enough to promise a complete theater; consider delaying the purchase or using second-hand equipment only when you can verify it in person.
Best-supported path: add a compact soundbar/streamer to a working TV
What the Roku Streambar SE does
Roku describes the Streambar SE as a compact soundbar and 4K streaming player in one. Its listed features include enhanced speech clarity and a Bluetooth headphone mode, and the box includes setup items. That combination can solve a weak-TV-speaker problem and an outdated streaming-interface problem without buying two separate devices.
The manufacturer product page showed a limited-time price of $99.99, reduced from $149.99, when it was checked. This is a temporary manufacturer offer, not a stable market price. Recheck the current listing before buying: at $99.99, the nominal remainder of a $150 budget is $50.01; at the regular $149.99 figure, essentially the entire budget is consumed before tax, delivery or any missing adapter.
What that purchase does not provide
- It does not provide a television, projector or other display.
- A compact bar is not the same as a separate left/right/center/subwoofer/surround-speaker array.
- It cannot guarantee deep bass, room-filling output or a reference-quality image simply because it supports 4K streaming.
- Compatibility still depends on the television’s available input and audio-output settings, your network and the streaming services you use.
Installation sequence
- Place the bar directly below or in front of the television, keeping its speaker grille and any remote sensor unobstructed.
- Connect power to the bar and television. Use the connection type supported by both devices; follow the television’s audio-output menu rather than assuming a particular port will work.
- Complete the on-screen Roku setup, connect to Wi-Fi and sign in only to the services you actually use.
- Play a dialogue-heavy scene and adjust the television’s audio output so sound comes from the bar rather than the built-in speakers. If voices remain unclear, enable the bar’s speech-enhancement control and reduce competing TV sound modes.
- Pair Bluetooth headphones only after confirming that private listening is supported by the current software and that the headphones are charged. Remember that headphone use changes who can hear the program; it is not a replacement for a multi-room speaker system.
- Update the device and television firmware, then test power-on, volume control, streaming playback and lip-sync before discarding the packaging.
This path is strongest when the television is the part you already own and like. It is a convenience and dialogue upgrade, not a claim that a small bar recreates a theater’s acoustics.

Projector route: a larger picture with more dependencies
Why a cheap projector is not a complete theater
A projector can create a larger image than a similarly priced television, but the projector is only the display component. Dolby’s official setup guidance explains that projectors may have one or two built-in speakers, but says a rich, immersive experience requires connecting a soundbar or an AV receiver and speakers. You also need a source device, a surface or screen, sensible placement and enough control over ambient light.
Dolby describes a good home-theater projector as commonly producing images between 100 and 150 inches. That general description is not a certification of any particular low-cost model’s brightness, resolution, contrast or suitability for your room. A product page that advertises a large diagonal number does not establish that the image will be sharp, bright or watchable with lights on.
What to verify in the room
- Light: Daylight and uncovered lamps wash out inexpensive projected images. Test after dark or plan effective light control.
- Surface: A textured, colored or uneven wall can undermine focus and contrast. A screen is another component, not an automatic inclusion.
- Throw distance and height: Measure where the projector can sit and whether its lens can fill the available surface without blocking viewers.
- Audio location: Built-in speakers are often behind or above the audience. Check whether an external soundbar or speakers can sit near the screen and accept the projector’s output.
- Source inputs: Confirm HDMI or other required inputs and whether your streaming player, game console or computer is included. A projector does not automatically supply streaming subscriptions or a playback device.
Interpreting “combo” product names
Naxa labels one product a “150” Home Theater LCD Projector Combo” and gives external streaming devices as examples of equipment that can connect; those devices are not included. The product name therefore cannot be treated as proof that a complete home theater costs $150 or that the image meets cinema standards. Read the actual specification list for native resolution, brightness, inputs, included accessories and warranty terms before considering any low-cost projector.

| Path | Best fit | What it can solve | Compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact soundbar/streamer added to an existing TV | The television works; dialogue or streaming is the problem | Combines streaming access and improved TV audio | No new display and no separate surround array; offer price and stock can change |
| Use or buy a projector | A very large image matters and the room already supports projection | Potentially larger picture than a television | Image quality, screen, placement, light control, source and external audio all affect the result |
| Reuse speakers or headphones | The display and playback are already handled | Directs the budget toward one audio weakness | Compatibility and setup depend on equipment you already own; no universal package price is established |
| Low-cost projector “combo” | You accept uncertainty and verify every specification | May put a basic display device in one box | Marketing names and claimed image size do not prove quality; source devices may be excluded |
Compare candidates by total system cost, not the headline device price. Then check real picture quality in the intended room, dialogue intelligibility, streaming compatibility, connection types, setup effort and your tolerance for used-equipment risk. No independent laboratory comparison or hands-on test establishes that one of these paths delivers a particular performance level.

Three practical ways to allocate the budget
Scenario 1: You already own a television and need clearer speech
Put the money into the compact soundbar/streamer path. The observed $99.99 limited-time offer leaves nominal room for tax, delivery or an adapter, but the regular $149.99 price does not. Confirm the television connection before ordering and retain enough flexibility to return the unit if dialogue, volume control or streaming compatibility is poor in your room.
Scenario 2: You own a television and already have usable speakers
Do not buy another audio system merely because it is marketed as a home theater. First test the speakers with the television’s available output. If sound is acceptable, the better use of the budget may be a playback upgrade, replacement cable or nothing at all. The evidence does not establish a universal price for combining reused speakers with a new source, so calculate your own missing pieces.
Scenario 3: You own no dependable display
Do not treat a projector listing as a guaranteed solution. Decide whether you can supply a dark room, a suitable surface, a source device and external audio. If any of those are missing, save the money for a display or buy components only when you can verify their specifications and compatibility. A series of cheap partial purchases can leave you with several devices that still cannot play a film together.

Compromises to expect at this price
Sound and bass
A compact bar can improve speech projection and convenience, but small enclosures and the absence of a separate subwoofer limit how much low-frequency impact you should expect. Explosions may sound fuller than they do through thin television speakers without matching a dedicated surround system.

Surround immersion
One bar placed at the front of the room cannot physically reproduce the same speaker separation as rear channels and a center channel positioned around the listener. Treat “home theater” here as a viewing setup, not a promise of discrete surround placement.
Picture quality
Streaming in 4K capability describes the format a player can handle; it does not upgrade a television’s panel or guarantee that a projector displays 4K detail. Room light, screen size, focus and the display’s native resolution still determine what you see.
Convenience versus flexibility
An all-in-one unit reduces boxes and cables, which is valuable in a small room. The trade-off is fewer upgrade paths than separate speakers and a dedicated receiver. If one integrated component fails, more of the system is affected at once.

Pre-purchase and troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the exact television model, available audio outputs and HDMI-ARC/eARC behavior if relevant.
- Check whether your Wi-Fi reaches the display location and whether every required streaming service is supported.
- Measure the shelf or wall space; a bar should not block the screen, remote sensor or ventilation.
- For projection, measure throw distance, test brightness at your intended viewing time and identify a sound location near the image.
- Verify what is actually in the box. External streaming devices, screens, speakers and subscriptions may be separate purchases.
- Keep packaging until you have tested a full movie, dialogue scenes, volume control, network playback and headphone behavior.
If there is no sound
Check that the bar and television are both powered, that the cable is connected to the intended ports and that the TV audio menu is set to the external output. Temporarily disable unusual surround or passthrough modes to isolate a basic stereo signal.
If voices are still hard to hear
Move the bar into clear view, enable speech enhancement, turn down competing TV speakers and test several sources. A poorly mixed stream or a room with strong reflections can remain difficult even after an equipment upgrade.
If streaming fails
Test another app, restart the network connection and install available firmware updates. Separate a network or account problem from a hardware problem before returning the device.
Bottom line
Under $150, the defensible purchase is an incremental upgrade to a television you already own. A compact soundbar with built-in streaming can improve dialogue and simplify access to video, especially when a temporary $99.99 offer is available. It does not create a new display, a subwoofer or true surround sound. A projector can produce a larger image, but only as part of a larger chain that includes a suitable room, surface, source and external audio. If those pieces are not already available, a complete, dependable home theater for $150 is not established; save the budget or narrow the goal to the one component that is actually holding movie night back.
