No. Yamaha does not document a supported way to connect separate rear or bookshelf speakers to the YAS-209. It provides virtual surround processing and a supplied wireless subwoofer, but its specifications list no speaker outputs and mark MusicCast Surround unavailable for this model.
What surround sound does the YAS-209 provide?
The YAS-209 uses DTS Virtual:X to create a virtual surround effect through the soundbar system. Yamaha’s YAS-209 Quick Start Guide says: “This unit supports virtual 3D surround sound technology called ‘DTS Virtual:X’.” Virtual processing is not the same as discrete audio channels played through physical speakers behind you.

The bar includes a wireless subwoofer for bass. Yamaha says the supplied unit “enables more dynamic audio playback.” The owner’s manual describes manually pairing that supplied subwoofer if it needs reconnecting; it does not describe pairing additional speakers or a second subwoofer.

Why passive speakers and wireless kits won’t add rear channels
Yamaha’s YAS-209 specifications list HDMI, optical, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity, but no speaker terminals or separate speaker output. Passive bookshelf speakers, including Yamaha NS-333 speakers, therefore cannot be connected directly to the bar. The specifications also show no subwoofer output for this model.

The same specification page marks MusicCast Surround unavailable for the YAS-209. Its comparison table lists MusicCast Surround support for the MusicCast BAR 400, but that feature belongs to that model—not the YAS-209. An adapter, amplifier, or wireless speaker kit does not establish a supported integration path where Yamaha documents none.
What the Yamaha power ratings mean
Yamaha Corporation of America publishes 200 W total rated output for the YAS-209: 50 W × 2 for the center unit and 100 W for the subwoofer. These are manufacturer specifications on Yamaha’s current page, accessed in 2026, not independent measurements. They describe the supplied system and do not imply spare channels or an ability to attach additional speakers.

What to choose if you want physical rear speakers
If your goal is sound from behind the listening position, choose a soundbar or home-theater system whose manufacturer explicitly lists compatible rear speakers or a surround expansion kit for the exact model. Before buying, check:

YAS-209 availability
Yamaha’s US downloads and support page labels the YAS-209 discontinued. That status does not establish whether any particular seller still has stock. Yamaha lists firmware version 5.31 with a last update date of August 3, 2022; its online owner’s manual is revision 2020.3.
