Sometimes. A laptop may use removable RAM modules, soldered memory, or a mix of both. Whether you can add or replace memory depends on the exact configuration—not just the laptop’s family name. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and the matching service manual before buying RAM.
How to check whether your laptop RAM is upgradeable
- Find the complete model identifier. Use the model number, machine type, product number, or SKU on the laptop label, in system information, or on the manufacturer’s support page. A product family can include configurations with different memory layouts.
- Open the manufacturer’s specification for that exact configuration. Look for memory type, whether it is onboard or socketed, the number of slots, and the supported capacity.
- Read the matching service or maintenance manual. Check for a memory replacement procedure, supported module details, maximum capacity, and any battery-disconnection or case-access instructions. Lenovo directs users to its user guides, hardware maintenance manuals, and model specifications when checking supported memory.
- Resolve conflicting clues with the manufacturer. Task Manager slot counts, retailer listings, and third-party memory configurators can be useful clues, but they are not definitive when they disagree with model documentation. Acer likewise recommends checking the exact model’s specifications and service manual, and notes that some models combine soldered and socketed memory: Acer support.
If the documentation remains unclear, ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider to confirm the memory layout and supported upgrade using the complete model identifier.

What soldered and upgradeable RAM mean
Socketed memory
A socketed SO-DIMM is a removable module. You can replace it or add another only if the laptop has an available compatible slot and supports the intended module and capacity. Consult the owner’s manual to locate expansion slots; Crucial’s installation guidance explains how a SO-DIMM seats in its socket: Crucial’s laptop memory installation guide.
Soldered memory
Soldered RAM is attached directly to the system board, rather than installed as a removable stick. It is not a standard consumer upgrade: there is no ordinary module to swap or add for that portion of memory.

- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Hybrid memory
Some laptops have a fixed amount of soldered RAM plus a separate SO-DIMM slot. In that case, you may be able to upgrade the socketed portion, subject to the laptop’s supported module specifications and maximum total capacity. The exact model documentation must confirm that the slot exists and what it accepts.
How to choose a compatible module
Once the documentation confirms an upgrade path, compare the candidate module with the laptop’s requirements before ordering. Check:

- A-Tech 32GB RAM Kit (2 x 16GB Modules), DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 2666MHz / 2667MHz PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select DDR4 SODIMM capable Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) computer systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop (DIMM), DDR2, DDR3, DDR5, ECC Registered (RDIMM), ECC Load Reduced (LRDIMM), or ECC Unbuffered (ECC UDIMM) memory types
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
- Whether a compatible slot is available.
- Form factor, such as SO-DIMM.
- Memory generation, such as DDR4.
- Voltage and supported speed.
- Capacity supported per slot and maximum supported total.
A compatibility lookup can help identify candidates, but cross-check its result against the laptop manufacturer’s specifications and service guide. Crucial provides a model-based compatibility selector. For example, Crucial lists the CT16G4SFRA32A as a 16GB DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM operating at 1.2V; those product details do not establish that it fits any particular laptop.

What to expect during installation
Access and tools vary by laptop. Follow the procedure in the exact model’s service manual, including any directions for disconnecting the battery or removing the bottom cover. Crucial’s general installation guide points readers to the owner’s manual for slot location; it is not a universal disassembly procedure. Buy a precision screwdriver only if the model-specific instructions call for one and its fastener type matches.

If you are choosing a new laptop and want the option to upgrade memory later, compare the manufacturer’s documentation for each exact configuration:
Rank #4
- Capacity – 32GB RAM KIT (2 x 16GB Modules) Speed up to 2666MHz Non-ECC Unbuffered 260-Pin 1.2V SODIMM.
- Specs – PCB Color (Green or Black) and Rank (1Rx8 or 2Rx8) may vary depending on production batch. Performance and quality remain consistent across all Timetec products.
- Compatibility – Designed for selected DDR4 Laptop, Notebook, Mini PCs, and All-In-One systems(AIO) that support 260-Pin SODIMM memory. NOT compatible with Desktop DIMM slots.
- Installation – Plug-and-Play Upgrade, Quick and Easy to Install, no expertise required (please refer to your system's manual for guidelines).
- Warranty – All Timetec products are high-quality and rigorously tested to meet stringent standards. Backed by Timetec Limited Lifetime Warranty and professional technical support based in the United States.
- Whether the layout is soldered-only, socketed, or hybrid.
- Installed capacity and maximum supported capacity.
- Number of slots and whether they are accessible for service.
- Whether the manufacturer publishes a memory-service procedure.
A soldered-only configuration fixes its memory capacity at purchase. A socketed design may allow a later replacement or expansion, but only within the laptop’s documented limits.
