Recommended Free Tools
No. BandLab Studio does not offer a supported way to install or load external VST, VST3, AU, CLAP, or other third-party plugins, whether you use a free account or BandLab Membership. You can use BandLab’s built-in effects and instruments, or render sounds and processing in another plugin-capable DAW before importing the resulting audio.
The short answer
This applies to BandLab Studio in a desktop browser and to its iOS and Android apps. BandLab’s documented workflow covers its own effects, virtual instruments, Sounds library, and imported audio or MIDI; it does not provide a plugin scanner, plugin-folder selector, or external-plugin insert slot. See BandLab’s Studio guide.
An “external plugin” is software installed separately from BandLab, such as a Serum or Vital synthesizer, Kontakt, Auto-Tune, Melodyne, FabFilter, Valhalla, iZotope, Waves effect, guitar amp simulator, or third-party drum instrument. VST, VST3, Audio Unit (AU), CLAP, and proprietary formats are all examples of plugin technologies that require a host application.
Why an installed plugin does not appear
Traditional desktop DAWs install a local plugin host and scan folders on your computer. BandLab Studio is a cloud-based workspace delivered through a browser or mobile app, and its official Studio workflow has no supported mechanism for selecting those local plugin files. A Chrome extension or mobile plugin installation is not the same as hosting a DAW plugin, so neither creates a BandLab plugin slot.

Does BandLab Membership add VST or AU support?
No—not inside BandLab Studio. Membership adds BandLab-native effects and presets, AutoPitch options, AI tools, mastering features, Sounds and Beats allowances, artist services, and access to certain separate products. The Membership FAQ does not list third-party plugin hosting for Studio. Features, tiers, and pricing can change, so check the current terms before subscribing.
What you can use inside free BandLab
Built-in effects
Select a track, open Effects at the lower left (or the track header’s FX icon), choose Add Effect, then select a BandLab effect and adjust its controls or a preset. A regular track can contain up to 10 effects; Membership accounts can contain up to 20. BandLab currently documents more than 50 vocal, 40 guitar, and 20 bass-guitar presets, although some effects require Membership. Details are in Adding Effects.
Custom FX presets
You can combine effects from BandLab’s library, save the chain, and find it under My Presets. This saves a BandLab effect chain; it cannot contain a third-party plugin. Follow Creating Custom FX Presets.

Virtual instruments and Sounds
BandLab provides its own virtual instruments (the current documentation lists more than 370 free professionally designed instruments), loops, samples, and other Sounds. These are not VST instruments, but they are available directly in Studio. See Using BandLab Virtual Instruments.
Imported audio and MIDI
You can import files, but importing a file is not importing the plugin that created it. Supported web formats include MIDI, MP3, MP4, WAV, M4A, AAC, and OGG; consult BandLab’s format list for current details.
How to use an external plugin indirectly
The practical workaround is to print the plugin’s output to audio elsewhere, then bring that audio into BandLab.

- Open the external instrument or effect in a DAW that supports the plugin.
- For an instrument, create or record the MIDI part. For effects, process the vocal, guitar, stem, or mix.
- Render or export the result, preferably as a WAV at the project’s intended sample rate and bit depth. Keep an unprocessed safety export.
- In BandLab, create or open a project and choose Import Audio/MIDI on the New Track page, or drag the file into Studio.
- Align the imported region, then mute or remove the track it replaces.
BandLab’s import instructions are at Importing Audio and MIDI Files. Imported audio may include a few seconds of initial silence; use the faint vertical dotted-line marker to move the region back to its original start.
For mixing or mastering
Export a BandLab track, stems, or mixdown; open the files in a plugin-capable desktop DAW; insert and automate the external plugins there; export the processed files; and import them back into BandLab. Export stems or individual tracks rather than only a stereo mix when you expect further editing.

- MIDI does not contain the instrument. It stores notes and performance data. Importing MIDI into BandLab requires a BandLab instrument, so the original Serum, Kontakt, or other plugin sound will not come with it.
- Rendered audio prints the processing. Plugin controls, authorization, presets, automation, and routing are not editable in BandLab after export.
- Revisions require a round trip. Keep the external DAW project and plugin presets, change them there, export again, and replace the imported audio.
Does Cakewalk support plugins?
Yes, but Cakewalk Sonar and Cakewalk Next are separate desktop DAWs, not upgraded versions of BandLab Studio. BandLab’s announcement describes third-party VST support in those products. Sonar is a Windows desktop DAW; Next is also a separate application with its own requirements and project handling. See the announcement at BandLab Technologies, and verify current eligibility and operating-system requirements on the relevant product page.

Common problems explained
“I installed the VST, but BandLab cannot find it.”
That is expected: Studio has no documented plugin scan or plugin-directory workflow. Installing a plugin on your computer does not install it into the browser or mobile app.
“I paid for Membership and it still is not there.”
Membership unlocks BandLab features and may provide access to separate products; it does not add an external-plugin slot to Studio.
“My imported MIDI lost the synth sound.”
Render the synth to audio in the compatible DAW, or assign the MIDI to a BandLab instrument.
Best Value
- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
“My WAV is late.”
Check for the initial silence BandLab describes and move the region to the dotted-line start marker.
Final verdict
You cannot add external plugins directly to free BandLab Studio, and Membership does not change that. Use BandLab’s internal tools, or keep the plugin work in Cakewalk Sonar, Cakewalk Next, or another desktop DAW and exchange rendered audio or stems with BandLab.
