Yes. Once YouTube has created a recording of your gaming livestream, you can add chapters by putting timestamps and titles in the video’s description. The markers apply to the archived video; they are not chapter controls for a broadcast that is still live.
How to add chapters to a gaming livestream archive
- Wait for the stream to end and check that an archive exists. In YouTube Studio, find the completed livestream. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the recording is important, keep a local recording as a backup. See YouTube’s live archive guidance.
- Edit the archive’s description in YouTube Studio. Add a list of timestamps followed by concise titles at the points viewers may want to revisit.
- Meet the manual chapter rules. Start with
00:00, include at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Save the description. YouTube’s video chapter instructions set out these requirements. - Check the published watch page. Confirm the chapter divisions appear in the progress bar and that the titles are useful. Viewers can navigate chapters from the progress bar or the description/player chapter title; see YouTube’s guidance on chapters and seeking.
For example, replace these illustrative labels and times with moments that actually occur in your VOD:

00:00 Intro and setup
03:14 Match 1 begins
18:42 Loadout change
27:05 Final match
Manual timestamps are the dependable way to mark specific moments. Automatic chapters are not guaranteed: YouTube says some videos are ineligible, and eligible videos do not always receive them. Manual chapters override automatic ones. Details are in YouTube’s timestamp chapter guide.

Chapters in the original video’s description should not be treated as chapter markers on a new live broadcast. YouTube’s chapter instructions describe chapters for a video, while a rerun broadcast is live. If YouTube creates an archive of that new broadcast, add timestamps to that archive’s description after it is available.

Chapters and live DVR are different
| Feature | When it applies | How viewers use it |
|---|---|---|
| Video chapters | On the completed video or livestream archive | Jump among timestamped sections shown in the progress bar or description/player |
| Live DVR | While the broadcast is in progress | Pause or rewind within the live stream; viewers cannot seek to before it began |
DVR may be limited or unavailable on very long streams, and limits can be lower on some devices or older app versions. If you disable DVR, viewers cannot seek backward during the live broadcast, but may still be able to watch the full recording after it is available. See YouTube’s DVR instructions.
Troubleshooting timestamps that do not appear
- No archive to edit: Check YouTube Studio after the stream ends. A stream over 12 hours may not be captured; use a local recording as a backup when an archive matters.
- Chapters do not show: Check that the list starts at
00:00, contains at least three timestamps in ascending order, and leaves at least 10 seconds per chapter. Save the description and check the watch page. - Automatic chapters are missing: This can happen even on an eligible video. Add manual timestamps instead.
- Expecting chapters during the live broadcast: Description-based video chapters are for the video/archive. Use live DVR for supported pause-and-rewind navigation during the broadcast; it is not the same feature.
