You can use Android Auto for free in an older car only if its existing stereo or display already supports it. Connect a compatible Android phone by USB, or pair it wirelessly if both the phone and stereo support wireless Android Auto. A USB port or Bluetooth connection alone does not establish compatibility.
Can I get Android Auto without changing my stereo?
Yes, if the stereo already supports Android Auto. Check the owner’s manual, infotainment settings, or vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility information for your exact model year, trim, and stereo. If you are unsure, Google recommends checking with the manufacturer. A charging port, Bluetooth audio, or a generic smartphone icon is not proof: Google notes that Android Auto does not work on every car with a USB port.

Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones, so you do not need to download a separate app for car-display use. Google’s Android Auto setup instructions explain the connection process.
What you need for the free route
The no-purchase option depends on using compatible equipment already in the car. Google’s current general requirements vary by connection type:

- Wired Android Auto: An Android phone running Android 9.0 (Pie) or newer, an active data plan, a compatible car or stereo, and a high-quality USB cable.
- Wireless Android Auto: A compatible phone and car or stereo, with the wireless requirements for that phone and region. Google’s general guidance specifies Android 11.0 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi, with device exceptions.
These are Google’s requirements in its Android Auto help documentation; confirm exact compatibility for your phone and vehicle rather than assuming every device that meets a general requirement will work wirelessly.
How to connect by USB
- Park the car, turn on its infotainment system, and make sure the phone meets Google’s wired requirements.
- Connect the phone to the car’s USB port with a high-quality, data-capable cable. A charging-only cable will not establish the data connection Android Auto needs.
- Follow the setup prompts on the car display and phone. Complete setup before driving.
If a previously working connection stops, try a known-good cable. Google recommends a cable under one metre and advises against USB hubs and extensions. A better cable can solve a connection problem, but it cannot make an incompatible stereo support Android Auto. See Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance.

How to connect wirelessly
- Confirm that both the phone and the exact car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
- For initial setup, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone, then pair it with the car over Bluetooth.
- Follow the prompts on both screens and keep the phone’s data service available.
Wireless support depends on the specific phone, operating system, vehicle, and region. If pairing does not start Android Auto, check the car manufacturer’s compatibility details and Google’s setup requirements.

Can I use Android Auto with just my phone?
You can use a mounted phone to run navigation apps on the phone screen, if that arrangement suits your needs and local driving rules. That is phone-based navigation, not Android Auto projected onto the car display. A mount does not add Android Auto to a factory stereo that lacks support.

Google described Assistant driving mode for phone-based use in older cars in a 2021 announcement. That announcement is historical context, not confirmation that the feature is currently available to every driver or a full substitute for Android Auto projection. Current Android Auto setup connects a phone to a compatible car or aftermarket stereo, as described in Google’s setup instructions.

When you need different hardware
If your factory stereo is incompatible, no cable, app, adapter, or settings change can make it project Android Auto. A compatible aftermarket receiver is the hardware route for adding Android Auto to the car display, but it is not free. The right unit depends on your car’s make, model, year, and stereo configuration; installation may also be needed. Check vehicle fitment before buying.
