Does the Elgato Key Light support Matter?
Elgato’s documentation reviewed for this article does not identify the standard Key Light as a Matter accessory or provide an Apple Home pairing procedure. Its technical specifications describe a Wi-Fi light, while its network protocol documentation describes Bonjour/multicast discovery and HTTP requests between the paired light and Control Center. Those technologies do not establish Matter support.

Elgato’s firmware history lists firmware 1.0.3 (222), requiring Control Center 1.7.1, with security improvements and a fix for an issue that could leave the light unresponsive; it does not describe a Matter update. This is what the reviewed documentation establishes, not proof that no later or unofficial integration exists. Do not expect a normal firmware update to add Apple Home Matter pairing unless Elgato explicitly documents that capability.

How to connect Key Light to Elgato Control Center
This is the documented setup path for using the light with Elgato software. It does not enroll the light in Apple Home.

- Use Elgato’s iOS setup to pair the Key Light with your Wi-Fi network. The light supports 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi with WPA/WPA2 encryption, according to Elgato’s technical specifications.
- Open Elgato Control Center and confirm the paired light appears. Elgato documents using Control Center to switch it on or off, adjust brightness, and fine-tune color temperature.
- Check for firmware updates in Control Center using Elgato’s update instructions. Available updates address the changes listed by Elgato; the listed firmware does not add Matter pairing.
Why Apple Home’s Matter setup cannot add this light
Apple’s Matter support documentation says compatible accessories can be added through the Home app or a HomeKit-based app. Apple lists lights as a supported Matter accessory category. That enrollment flow applies to accessories that actually support Matter; it cannot convert a Wi-Fi device using another control method into a Matter accessory.
For a genuine non-Thread Matter accessory, Apple’s compatibility guidance calls for an iPhone running iOS 18 or later or an iPad running iPadOS 18 or later for pairing and local control. Automations, notifications, and remote access require a compatible home hub, such as HomePod or Apple TV. These are Apple’s requirements for compatible Matter accessories, not a workaround for the Key Light’s undocumented Matter support.

What to choose if you need Apple Home control
If direct Apple Home control is essential, look for a light whose manufacturer explicitly confirms Matter support and Apple Home pairing. Check these details before buying:
- Compatibility: Confirm Matter support for the exact model and Apple Home pairing—not merely Wi-Fi or compatibility with the manufacturer’s own app.
- Lighting performance: Match the output and adjustable color range to your use. Elgato lists the Key Light at 2,800 lumens, adjustable, with a 2,900–7,000 K color range; those figures are product specifications, not a guarantee that another light will suit the same work.
- Physical fit: A smart bulb or general-purpose Matter light may not provide the mounting, positioning, or illumination needed for a desk or creator setup.
- Home hub needs: Check whether the Apple Home functions you want—especially automations or remote access—require a compatible home hub.
Apple supports Matter lights as a category, but that does not establish that any particular alternative is a suitable creator light. Verify both the individual product’s Apple Home compatibility and its physical and lighting performance.
