Can You Add an Animated GIF as Your Windows 11 Account Picture?

You can change your Windows 11 account picture in Settings, but you should not expect an animated GIF to work. Microsoft explicitly says animated GIFs are not supported for Microsoft account pictures. For a local Windows account, Microsoft’s instructions do not specify whether the picture chooser accepts GIF files or what it would display, so animation is not guaranteed.

How Windows 11 handles GIF profile pictures

The answer depends on the type of account. A local Windows account picture is changed in Windows Settings. A personal Microsoft account picture is managed through the Microsoft account dashboard and may appear across apps and devices using that account. A work or school picture may be controlled by your organization.

Account type Where to change the picture GIF support Who controls editing
Local Windows account Settings > Accounts > Your info Microsoft’s Windows picture instructions do not state whether GIF files are accepted or animated. You, through Windows Settings.
Personal Microsoft account Microsoft account dashboard Animated GIFs are not supported, according to Microsoft Support. You, unless editing is restricted by an administrator.
Work or school account Your organization’s My Account portal, if enabled The cited work or school instructions do not specify GIF animation support. Your organization may restrict changes; contact IT or HR if editing is unavailable.

Change the picture for a local Windows account

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Accounts > Your info.
  3. Under Adjust your photo, select Choose a file > Browse files, then choose an image. If your device has a camera, select Open camera to take a new photo.
  4. To reuse one of your recent pictures, select it on the Your info page. Windows remembers the last three pictures used.

These steps are documented for Windows 11 and Windows 10 in Microsoft’s Windows account-picture guide. That guide does not list supported file formats or promise GIF animation. If you try a GIF in the local chooser, treat the result as build-dependent and check the displayed picture rather than assuming it will move.

Change a personal Microsoft account picture

Use the Microsoft account dashboard to change a picture tied to your personal Microsoft account. Microsoft Support says, “You can use most static image files on PC, macOS, iOS and Android, but HEIC and animated GIFs are not supported, sorry.” A GIF therefore is not a supported animated profile picture for this account type.

A changed Microsoft account picture may take up to 24 hours to appear across the apps and devices that use the account. To make a portrait or landscape photo fit more fully, Microsoft recommends adding borders in an image-editing app to make the image square; this prepares a static image and does not enable GIF animation. See Microsoft’s account-picture guidance.

Work or school accounts may be restricted

If you use a work or school account, try changing the picture through your organization’s My Account portal. The organization can disable profile editing, so an unavailable edit control may require help from IT or HR. Microsoft’s instructions for work or school profile pictures describe this route and the possibility of restrictions.

What to use instead of an animated GIF

For a dependable account picture, choose a static image. Use the local Windows Settings route for a local account, the Microsoft account dashboard for a personal Microsoft account, or your organization’s portal for a work or school account when editing is permitted. None of these instructions establishes a supported way to make an account picture animate as a GIF.
