Yes—but “see” means inferring radio-wave changes, not producing an ordinary camera image. Wi‑Fi sensing systems transmit or observe radio signals, measure how walls and people alter those signals, and use signal processing or machine learning to estimate presence, movement, boundaries, gestures, or pose-like patterns. The capability belongs to specific research systems; a normal home router is not established as a ready-to-use through-wall camera.
What through-wall Wi‑Fi sensing actually measures
Visible light is blocked by most walls, while radio waves at Wi‑Fi frequencies can pass through some building materials and reflect from people. A receiver observes changes in the wireless channel—such as amplitude and phase across multiple subcarriers and over time—then a model interprets those changes.

The output may be a binary presence decision, a moving-person trace, a room-boundary crossing, an activity label, or a coarse pose-like representation. It is not automatically a full-fidelity photograph, and the system cannot generally identify every detail that a camera would capture.
Active and passive arrangements
- Active sensing: a system controls or coordinates the transmitted signal and analyzes reflections. MIT’s Wi‑Vi project demonstrated motion and simple gesture concepts through a non-metallic wall.
- Passive monitoring: a monitor listens to existing Wi‑Fi traffic without controlling the indoor transmitter. WiFiLeaks studied whether ordinary wireless activity could reveal stationary presence, framing the result as a potential privacy leak.
- Custom sensing hardware: SiWiS added a sensing module and neural network to a commercial Wi‑Fi device. Its paper says the system “does not emit any radio signals”; it uses its host device’s OFDM signal for sensing.
What different research systems can detect
These projects are not interchangeable features of consumer Wi‑Fi. Their hardware, signal access, environments and target tasks differ.

The percentages above are study-specific measurements, not independently replicated benchmarks or guarantees for an arbitrary building. The papers used different layouts, distances, placements and definitions of success, so their numbers should not be combined.
How the inference pipeline works
- Transmit or observe Wi‑Fi: Depending on the design, the system sends a known waveform or listens to existing OFDM traffic.
- Capture channel measurements: Radios record how each subcarrier changes in amplitude and phase as signals travel, reflect and interfere.
- Separate human-related changes: Filtering and other signal-processing steps attempt to distinguish motion or occupancy from ordinary channel variation.
- Apply a model: A classifier, detector or neural network maps the processed measurements to presence, movement, a boundary event, segmentation or pose-like output.
- Report an estimate: The result is probabilistic and tied to the trained environment—not a universal visual reconstruction.
Why walls and rooms change the result
Performance depends on the radio path and the task being attempted. Attenuation reduces signal strength; multipath creates overlapping reflections; and noise can mask the changes caused by a person. Wall composition and thickness matter, as do furniture, doors, glass, room layout and moving objects.

TwSense experiments examined concrete, plaster, a wooden door and glass, illustrating that materials do not affect sensing identically. A model trained in one room may degrade when the furniture, transmitter location or receiver geometry changes.
Recommended Free Tools
- Placement: Distance, antenna orientation and whether devices are on the same or opposite sides of a wall affect the measured channel.
- Environment: People, fans, pets, doors and rearranged furniture can create changes that resemble or obscure a target.
- Task definition: Detecting that someone is present is substantially easier than recovering a detailed pose or separating multiple people.
- Calibration: Systems generally need data from the intended building and operating conditions.
What the published numbers do—and do not—prove
WiFiLeaks
The 2024 University at Buffalo study reported 83.33% presence accuracy and 100% absence accuracy at a 20-meter monitor-to-transmitter distance in its through-wall scenarios. The evaluation used nine Wi‑Fi transmitters, one commodity smartphone and four settings. Those figures describe that protocol and environment; they do not establish that any Wi‑Fi observer can detect occupants at 20 meters in every building.

WiBorder
The 2020 WiBorder paper reported a 99.4% intrusion detection rate with a 0.68% false-alarm rate, plus up to 97.03% accuracy for area detection in its tested real-life scenarios. “Up to” identifies the best reported area-detection result, not a guaranteed operating level across rooms or layouts.
Can a standard home router do this?
Not on the evidence described here. SiWiS was installed on a commercial Wi‑Fi device, but it also required a custom sensing module and neural-network software. WiBorder used commodity Wi‑Fi devices in a research system, with performance tied to its own setup. Buying an ordinary router does not reproduce those capabilities by itself, and no particular router model can be declared compatible without model-level evidence.

Researchers and advanced developers may investigate Wi‑Fi or RF development hardware, firmware access and channel-state-information tools, but a workable system requires an appropriate radio interface, signal access, calibration data and a model trained for the intended environment.
Privacy implications
Through-wall sensing can reveal information without a person wearing a transmitter. WiFiLeaks specifically examined passive inference from existing Wi‑Fi traffic and warned that ubiquitous Wi‑Fi devices may leak household privacy. In practice, what an observer can infer depends on the number and placement of radios, the wall and room configuration, traffic availability, algorithms and whether the system was trained for that setting.
Best Value
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
A presence estimate is not the same as reading a person’s identity, conversations or a detailed visual scene. Nevertheless, occupancy and activity patterns can be sensitive, so organizations should treat unexpected radio sensing as a security and privacy issue alongside cameras and other sensors.
Bottom line for readers
Wi‑Fi can support through-wall sensing, but the accurate description is radio-based inference, not camera-like vision. Research prototypes have detected motion, stationary presence, boundaries and pose-like patterns under controlled conditions. Their results depend on walls, room geometry, hardware, placement and the sensing task. A conventional router alone is not shown to be a plug-and-play through-wall people detector.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Wi‑Fi detect a person who is standing still behind a wall?
Some research systems can infer stationary presence, including the passive WiFiLeaks study, but reliability depends on the radio layout, wall, room conditions and trained model. It is not a universal capability of every Wi‑Fi network.
Does through-wall Wi‑Fi produce an image of the person?
No. The systems infer channel changes and may output presence, movement, boundaries, segmentation or a coarse pose-like result. They do not automatically produce an ordinary visible-light photograph.
Can I enable this feature on my current router?
The evidence does not establish that. SiWiS required a custom sensing module and neural-network software in addition to a commercial Wi‑Fi device, so a standard router alone should not be expected to provide through-wall sensing.
