Can We Love Robot Dogs as Much as Real Dogs? What the 2025 AIBO Study Shows

People can form real attachments to robot dogs, but current direct evidence does not show that they inspire the same bond as living dogs. In a 2025 peer-reviewed comparison, participants reported stronger attachment to real dogs, rated them as better companions, and showed an oxytocin increase during dog interactions. Oxytocin declined during interactions with Sony AIBO.

That does not make AIBO pointless. Its predictable, interactive behavior may suit settings where a living animal is impractical, including some hospital, elder-care and educational programs. The evidence supports “different kind of companion” more strongly than “replacement for a dog.”

What the strongest head-to-head study found

Klumpe, Mitchell and colleagues’ 2025 study is the clearest direct comparison located. It involved 19 female participants who completed 12 affiliative interactions across two one-month phases: one with real dogs and one with Sony AIBO. Because the sample was small, all female and measured over short phases, the results are a controlled comparison—not a population-wide estimate and not proof that an individual cannot love an AIBO deeply.

  • Attachment: participants reported stronger attachment to real dogs.
  • Companionship: real dogs received better social-companion evaluations.
  • Biological response: urinary oxytocin increased during interaction with dogs and decreased during interaction with AIBO.
  • Interpretation: the authors wrote that “Participants reported stronger attachment to dogs and rated them as better social companions.”

The result answers the narrow question as currently supported by evidence: people may care about a robot dog, but the measured emotional and physiological response was stronger for a living dog in this study.

Why a robot dog can still feel socially meaningful

AIBO is not simply a remote-controlled toy. Its dog-like body, movement, sounds and responsive behavior invite people to interpret what it does socially. Research on robot design has examined how appearance and framing affect bonding, trust and continued interaction.

Predictability can also be attractive. A robot does not become ill, wander away, need exercise in bad weather or require a sitter. Its responses are limited, but those limits can make interaction easier to schedule and control. For some users, reliable attention and a sense of routine may matter more than biological realism.

The 2025 study’s discussion captures the boundary: “AIBOs appear primarily as dog simulations instead of unique entities with dog-like and dog-distinct features and abilities.” Participants emphasized the genuineness of living dogs’ emotions and attachment in contrast with AIBO’s manufactured simulation. A person can understand that difference and still find the robot comforting or enjoyable.

How a living dog and Sony AIBO differ

Dimension Living dog Sony AIBO What the evidence supports
Emotional reciprocity People commonly perceive emotion, attachment and needs as genuine biological states. Responses are produced by programmed hardware and software, even when they appear spontaneous. Participants in the 2025 comparison rated dogs as more emotionally genuine and socially companionable.
Measured response Urinary oxytocin increased during the study’s dog interactions. Urinary oxytocin decreased during the study’s AIBO interactions. This finding comes from 19 female participants and should not be generalized to everyone.
Daily care Feeding, exercise, training, grooming, veterinary care, boarding and lifelong responsibility. Charging, cleaning, maintenance, software or service dependence and eventual repair or replacement. The study did not establish comparative ownership costs or reliability.
Agency and unpredictability A living animal has its own needs, preferences and behavior, including inconvenient or surprising behavior. Behavior is constrained by design and updates. That constraint can reduce burden but also limits the sense of an independent relationship.
Typical setting Household and community companionship. Companionship plus potentially structured use in care, education or therapy settings. Usefulness in a setting does not demonstrate emotional equivalence to a dog.

Do children see AIBO as a real dog?

Child research found a consistent distinction between live dogs and AIBO. Children attributed more physical essence, mental states, sociality and moral standing to living dogs than to the robot. In practical terms, they were more likely to treat a real dog as a sentient being with an inner life and claims on our care.

That distinction matters for how adults explain the technology. Calling AIBO a robot dog can be honest and engaging; presenting it as literally feeling love or pain risks confusing a simulation with an animal. Clear explanations also help children learn why a robot can be treated gently without having the same welfare needs as a living creature.

Could a robot dog help with loneliness or hospital isolation?

Loneliness and routine

AIBO may provide interaction, prompts for routine and a responsive presence for someone who cannot keep an animal. Those are plausible benefits, but the direct study measured attachment and companionship rather than proving long-term relief from loneliness. No population-level percentage showing that people love robot dogs as much as real dogs has been established.

Hospitals and pediatric care

Sony reported a pediatric inpatient AIBO intervention published on February 27, 2024, and described an improvement effect on psychological stress. The report supports AIBO as a possible structured supportive-care tool; it does not establish that AIBO replaces family contact, clinicians or the comfort of a living animal. The effect size and full protocol are not independently established by the evidence cited here.

Older adults, schools and other programs

In supervised programs, a robot can be easier to clean, schedule and control than an animal. That may be valuable where allergies, infection-control rules, housing restrictions or animal welfare make live-dog visits difficult. Whether it helps depends on the user, the program’s goals and the quality of human support around it.

What can go wrong with an AI pet?

Simulation mistaken for feeling

If marketing or caregivers imply that the robot genuinely loves, suffers or remembers in a human-like way, users may make decisions based on a false premise. The safest approach is to describe what the device can do and what it cannot establish about inner experience.

Privacy and data

A connected robot may collect interaction data or rely on cloud services. Before placing one in a bedroom, classroom or care facility, check what is recorded, where it is processed, how long it is retained, who can access it and how accounts are deleted. The relevant policy can change by model and region.

Autonomy and consent

People should be able to pause, disable or remove the robot without pressure, especially in care settings. Children, patients and residents need an understandable explanation that they are interacting with a machine, along with a human option when they decline.

Safety and responsibility

Moving hardware can trip someone, damage property or behave unexpectedly after an update. Assign responsibility for supervision, maintenance, incident reporting and software changes. A robot’s lack of animal welfare needs does not remove ordinary product-safety duties.

Justice and access

Programs should not offer a robot as a cheap substitute for staff attention, therapy or social contact. Evaluate who benefits, who is excluded by cost or disability, and whether the device supplements rather than displaces human care.

How to decide whether a robot dog fits your situation

  1. Define the need. Decide whether you want play, companionship, a scheduled activity, a therapeutic aid or a substitute for animal contact. A robot may meet some of these goals but not all.
  2. Compare the responsibility you can accept. A living dog requires daily care and veterinary decisions; a robot requires charging, technical upkeep and attention to service or software dependencies.
  3. Set expectations honestly. Treat AIBO as an interactive simulation, not evidence of a machine’s feelings. This is especially important when introducing it to children or people with cognitive impairments.
  4. Check the setting. For a hospital, school or care home, establish hygiene, noise, accessibility, supervision, data handling and a way to stop participation.
  5. Keep human contact in the plan. Use the robot to support conversation, play or routine, not to justify removing family visits, staff interaction or appropriate clinical care.
  6. Review after use. Look for sustained engagement, distress, frustration, privacy concerns and whether the device is helping the stated goal. Be prepared to stop if it is not.

So, can a robot dog replace a real dog?

For emotional equivalence, the answer is no—not on current direct evidence. Real dogs produced stronger attachment and companionship ratings, and the 2025 comparison found opposite oxytocin trends for dog and AIBO interactions. AIBO can nevertheless be a useful, lower-burden interactive companion or a structured support tool where a living animal is not feasible. The most accurate description is not “a dog without the work,” but “a robot designed to evoke some of the social experience of a dog.”
