That process, called biosorption, can transfer metals out of water, but it does not make them disappear: the metal-loaded seaweed must still be recovered and managed. The studies show promising, highly condition-dependent results, not a proven field-scale method for cleaning industrial wastewater.
How seaweed binds metals
Seaweed biomass contains chemical sites that can bind dissolved metal ions. In a study of dealginated seaweed—the residue left after commercial alginate production—metal uptake was explained mainly by ion exchange. The experiments found roughly one mole of calcium displaced for each mole of cadmium bound, and chemical treatment that esterified the biomass reduced sorption, supporting an important role for carboxyl groups. The same thesis reported other interactions for aluminium and gold, so ion exchange is not a universal explanation for every metal. The 2001 Sheffield Hallam University thesis describes these experiments and their mechanisms.

Biosorption is different from biological uptake by living algae: the cited studies used nonliving or processed biomass. Once a metal binds to the biomass, the water may contain less of that metal, but the resulting solid is metal-bearing material. The cited studies do not establish disposal requirements or a commercial process for handling it.

Results vary with the seaweed preparation, metal, water chemistry and test design. Figures from different studies should not be treated as a head-to-head ranking: they used different materials and conditions, and reported different measures of performance.

| Study and material | Test conditions and targets | Reported result | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nonliving Ulva biomass, with alkaline pretreatment examined | Cadmium, zinc and copper in aqueous solution; the study highlighted pH and pretreatment effects. | Langmuir maximum-capacity parameters of 60–90 mg/g for the three metals. | A capacity-model result for the tested material and conditions, not a guaranteed removal rate in wastewater. The study noted that mesh made the processed biomass easier to separate from solution. PubMed record for the 2005 Water Research study. |
| Dealginated seaweed, a by-product of alginate production | Multiple metals under experimental conditions, with pH and binding mechanisms investigated. | For an initial metal concentration of 10 mg L−1, one reported test reached 90% removal within 5 minutes; another reported 0.9 mg L−1 after 1 hour. Binding capacities were 1.2 mmol/g for cadmium, 0.5 for lead, 1.6 for nickel, 0.8 for copper, 1.2 for chromium, 0.4 for silver, 0.9 for aluminium and 0.4 for gold. | These are results from the thesis’s particular experiments, not general performance guarantees. Sheffield Hallam University thesis (2001). |
| Brown seaweed compared across metals | Metal identity, oxidation state and ionic strength were examined; one reported comparison was at pH 5. | For many tested cationic metals, high ionic strength lowered maximum uptake by 10–36%, with cobalt and lead exceptions, and lowered affinity constants by 33–91%. | Salt and competing ions can materially change binding. At pH 5, arsenate [As(V)] did not bind in the tested system, while chromium [Cr(III)] and [Cr(VI)] behaved very differently. Hong Kong Metropolitan University record for the 2006 Chemosphere study. |
| Seaweed-processing waste used in repeated sorption cycles | Zinc, nickel and aluminium were tested in both single-metal and multi-metal aqueous systems. | At the fifth sorption cycle, single-metal removal efficiencies were 92% for zinc, 96% for nickel and 94% for aluminium. Maximum efficiencies in multi-metal systems were 85%, 82% and 82%, respectively. | Reuse was demonstrated in this study, but performance differed between single-metal and mixed-metal tests. University of Portsmouth research record for the 2010 study. |
| Stranded seaweed collected from the Black Sea | Five macrophyte species were tested against selected chromium, iron, zinc and copper ions, including metallurgical wastewater samples. | The accessible abstract describes the setup but does not provide numeric removal outcomes. | It shows that wastewater samples have been considered experimentally; the available record does not support a specific efficiency claim. 2021 article record. |
| Brown seaweed tested for mining-relevant metals | Synthetic mining-relevant aqueous solutions; batch and fixed-bed column conditions. | The repository abstract does not provide a single overall removal figure. | The thesis identifies testing in real mining wastewater, regeneration and scale-up evaluation as further work. It was deposited on 2026-08-14. University of Waterloo thesis record. |
Why the water and the seaweed preparation matter
pH changes which binding sites work
In the Ulva study, alkaline pretreatment increased cadmium sorption, and the reported strong function was around pH 8. The dealginated-seaweed thesis reported optima around pH 6–8 for cadmium, lead, nickel, copper and chromium, but around pH 3–4 for aluminium and gold. These are study-specific experimental optima, not operating instructions for an actual wastewater stream.
Metal identity and oxidation state matter
“Heavy metals” is not one uniform target. The brown-seaweed comparison found different uptake behavior across metals and oxidation states: in its tested system at pH 5, arsenate [As(V)] did not bind, and chromium [Cr(III)] behaved very differently from chromium [Cr(VI)]. A result for one ion cannot be assumed to apply to another.

Salinity and competing ions can reduce uptake
Water chemistry can interfere with binding. In the tested Sargassum system, high ionic strength reduced maximum uptake for many cationic metals and reduced affinity; the study attributed sodium interference to electrostatic interaction. Industrial wastewater can contain mixtures of dissolved substances, so a result from a simpler laboratory solution may not carry over unchanged.

Can seaweed clean industrial wastewater?
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion: seaweed biomass can bind selected dissolved metals in controlled tests, and some studies have used wastewater samples or tested treatment setups relevant to industrial water. It does not establish that a seaweed-based treatment is commercially ready or effective across real industrial streams. The Black Sea study reports tests involving metallurgical wastewater samples, but its accessible abstract gives no numeric removal outcomes. The University of Waterloo thesis used synthetic mining-relevant solutions and says real mining wastewater, regeneration and scale-up evaluation remain further work.

Practical treatment would also need to address separating biomass from water, managing the captured metals, and maintaining performance as the sorbent is reused. A study demonstrating repeated sorption cycles is evidence of reuse under its test conditions, not proof of a complete treatment plant or an established commercial process.
