Not confirmed. YouTube accepts live video from an encoder using a stream URL and stream key, and recommends RTMPS. But the available VLC-specific documentation does not establish whether current VLC releases can connect to YouTube over the required protocol or automatically switch videos at scheduled times. Those are two separate capabilities, and YouTube’s scheduled-stream feature does not prove that VLC can change its video source on a timetable.
There are two separate questions
Can VLC send a compatible live feed?
YouTube’s encoder workflow is to create or schedule a live stream in Live Control Room, enter the stream URL and key in an encoder, start the encoder, and check the preview. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. Its instructions explain the YouTube side of the connection; they do not confirm that a particular VLC release supports the required YouTube ingest setup. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and encoder setup instructions are the relevant references.

Can VLC change the video by time of day?
That capability is also unverified. YouTube lets you schedule a live event, but scheduling the event is not the same as scheduling changes to the video being sent by an encoder. The cited YouTube guidance does not describe timed source switching inside VLC or another encoder.
So the practical answer is: do not rely on VLC for a scheduled video rotation until you have confirmed both protocol compatibility and timed switching for the exact VLC version and setup you intend to use.

What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do
Scheduling a stream in Live Control Room sets up the event and its watch-page workflow. The encoder still has to connect and send the feed when the broadcast is due to begin. Scheduling the event alone does not select a morning video, switch to an afternoon video, or control a playlist inside the encoder. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
For timed programming, treat source selection as a separate requirement from starting the YouTube event. Before choosing a workflow, establish whether it can select the required files at the required times, what happens between items, and whether it resumes correctly after a connection interruption.

How to verify a proposed VLC setup safely
The available evidence does not support giving a reliable VLC menu path or configuration recipe for this use. VLC-specific RTMPS support and time-triggered playlist changes need confirmation in the documentation for the current release. If you find a proposed configuration, test it end to end before making it responsible for a public schedule.
- Check the exact VLC release. Consult current VLC documentation or maintained project support material for both YouTube-compatible RTMPS output and a way to trigger source changes by time. A playlist feature by itself is not proof of time-of-day scheduling.
- Create a test event in YouTube Live Control Room. Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, and obtain the stream URL and key from that event. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming an address.
- Keep the stream key private. It is a credential that allows an encoder to send to your channel. YouTube documents creating and resetting keys; only a channel owner or manager can reset one. If a key is exposed, reset it in the stream settings. See Manage live stream settings.
- Test the complete timeline. Confirm that the feed connects, that the intended file is playing at each scheduled time, and that transitions do not leave unintended gaps, frozen video, or missing audio. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators.
- Monitor the test. YouTube advises testing in advance, checking the preview, and monitoring audio and video. Do not assume a schedule is working just because the event exists. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Settings and operational checks that matter
There is no single bitrate value that can be responsibly prescribed here: YouTube’s recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Match the encoder output to the actual source and available upload capacity, then use YouTube’s current table for the applicable combination. Check its live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than copying a number detached from those conditions.

- Confirm that the selected stream URL is the RTMPS URL shown for the event and that the matching stream key is entered correctly.
- Check that audio accompanies every source file and that the output remains stable when a source changes.
- Verify the schedule against the time zone you intend to use; a correct sequence at the wrong local time is still a failed schedule.
- Review the video and audio rights for every file. A successful encoder connection does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the content or that it complies with YouTube rules.
- Keep someone available to check stream health and the actual YouTube playback during early runs, especially around a planned changeover.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| The encoder does not connect | Verify the stream URL and key against the current Live Control Room event, and confirm that the specific VLC release supports the required ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the cited guidance does not establish VLC compatibility. |
| The scheduled event exists, but no video appears | Creating the event does not start an encoder feed. Confirm that the encoder is running and that the YouTube preview receives it. |
| The stream works, but the video does not change on schedule | Event scheduling and source switching are separate. Recheck whether the VLC version has a documented time-triggered source-selection feature; a playlist alone may not provide the required timetable. |
| Playback is unstable or quality is poor | Check stream health, available upload capacity, and the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate combination against YouTube’s current recommendations. |
| A source change produces silence or a gap | Test each file and transition in the full output, including audio continuity, before relying on the schedule for a public broadcast. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded content in the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. The stated product features include automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo’s documented playlist looping is not evidence of time-of-day video switching, so confirm that requirement separately if scheduled changes are essential.
The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. For a continuous YouTube loop rather than verified timed switching, start the StreamNeo free day.
