But that does not guarantee it will remain accessible indefinitely: Venmo generally treats an account as abandoned after three years without a login or other account activity, and the period can vary by jurisdiction. If Venmo contacts you about unclaimed money, follow the deadline in its notice.
What happens to money you leave in Venmo?
Received money stays in your Venmo account until you spend it or transfer it out, according to Venmo’s transfer instructions. The important distinction is between money remaining in the account and your ability to access it: prolonged inactivity can trigger an unclaimed-property process.

When can Venmo treat an account as abandoned?
Venmo says accounts are generally presumed abandoned after three years without a login or other account activity, but the period may vary by jurisdiction. This is general guidance, not a single deadline that applies to every user. Venmo’s unclaimed-money information explains the process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWatch for Venmo’s notice
Venmo says it will make reasonable efforts to contact you at the email address associated with the account. Its message gives the deadline to access the account. If that window expires, Venmo may send the funds to the appropriate state and close the account. Check the notice itself for the deadline that applies to you; do not assume you have exactly three years from the date you received a payment.

How to keep access to your money
- Log in and use the account: Venmo’s general dormancy description refers to no login or other account activity. If you receive an unclaimed-money notice, act by the deadline in that message.
- Transfer the balance: You can move money to a linked bank account or eligible card. Venmo says a standard bank transfer is free and typically takes one to three business days, though this is not guaranteed. Transfer details and Venmo’s review policy note that a review may delay a transfer or freeze funds.
- Spend or send it: You can use your balance for eligible Venmo payments. Identity verification is required to use money in your account for Venmo payments. Venmo says that without balance access, you can still receive money and transfer funds out to a bank or card; see its balance information and identity-verification guidance.
What to do before closing your Venmo account
Move your balance before you close the account. Venmo says you lose access to any remaining funds after closure. Its listed options include transferring money to a bank account or card, sending it to another Venmo user, or returning a payment. Complete pending transactions first. See Venmo’s account-closure instructions.

Not every Venmo balance is FDIC insured. Venmo says qualifying U.S.-dollar funds placed in program banks may be eligible for pass-through FDIC coverage, subject to conditions and limits. Other funds in a Venmo account and cryptocurrency are not held in FDIC-insured bank deposits. Any such coverage protects against the failure of a program bank, not PayPal’s failure; PayPal is not a bank. Venmo describes the conditions in its Direct Deposit FAQ.
