Yes. One Microsoft/Xbox account can be added to two Xbox consoles, including Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. But signing the same profile into both is not the best arrangement for two people. For simultaneous play, use two separate Xbox profiles and designate one console as the account owner’s Home Xbox. That lets the other person use eligible digital games and subscription content on their own profile while the owner plays on the second console.
Three different things people mean by “sharing an Xbox account”
| Goal | Best setup |
|---|---|
| Use one account on two Xboxes | Add the account to both consoles and sign in when needed. |
| Let another person use your digital games | Make that person’s console your Home Xbox. |
| Play at the same time | Use separate profiles; the owner uses the non-Home Xbox. |
Microsoft’s digital-goods rules allow Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games to be installed on a designated Home console and on another compatible console where the owning account is signed in. Microsoft’s usage rules explain that distinction.
Can the same account be signed into two Xboxes?
Yes. A Microsoft account can be associated with multiple Xbox consoles, and Microsoft provides tools to manage registered devices through your account. Manage devices used with a Microsoft account.
However, account access is not the same as license access. Your account owns the digital purchase or subscription. Its Home Xbox receives the local sharing license, while another Xbox normally needs that owner account signed in and connected to the internet for entitlement checks.

The recommended two-console arrangement
Example: Xbox A and Xbox B
- On Xbox B, sign in with the account that bought the games or pays for the subscription.
- Go to Xbox button → Profile & system → Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox.
- Select Make this my home Xbox. If the menu says Remove this as my home Xbox, it is already designated.
- Person B adds their own Xbox profile on Xbox B and plays there without keeping the owner account signed in.
- Person A plays on Xbox A using the purchasing account, which remains signed in there.
Microsoft’s official walkthrough describes this Home Xbox path and the sharing behavior: Home Xbox sharing explanation.
Each person then has separate saves, achievements, friends, privacy settings and parental controls. The owner should not leave their account permanently available on another person’s console just to make sharing work.
Can two people play at the same time?
Usually, yes, with the Home Xbox/non-Home Xbox arrangement above and eligible digital licenses. The Home Xbox user plays under their own profile; the owner plays under the purchasing profile on the other console.
Do not treat one shared profile as a reliable two-player solution. Using the same gamertag on both consoles can create sign-in interruptions, entitlement errors and mixed cloud-save progress. Community reports describe these conflicts, but they are practical user reports rather than a universal Microsoft guarantee: community example.

Simultaneous play can still depend on the title. A separate publisher account, an expired subscription, a game leaving Game Pass, online requirements, edition compatibility or a temporary license-verification failure can prevent it.
What Home Xbox shares
- Eligible digital games purchased from the Microsoft Store.
- Eligible downloadable content, subject to the add-on’s own license.
- Eligible Game Pass games and subscription benefits available through the console license.
- Local access to shared digital content when the owner is not signed in, including appropriate offline use.
Microsoft’s support explanation and community guidance describe these Home Xbox benefits for other profiles on that console: Microsoft Community explanation.
Game Pass is a subscription, not permanent ownership. Access ends when the subscription ends or a title leaves the catalog. Check the current plans and multiplayer benefits at the official Xbox Game Pass page.
What Home Xbox does not automatically share
- Gamertag, achievements, friends, messages and profile history.
- Cloud saves belonging to the owner’s profile.
- In-game currency, consumables and other account-bound items.
- Some publisher-specific licenses, add-ons and third-party entitlements.
- Payment details, family permissions, account identity and security settings.
Microsoft’s services terms distinguish account permissions and family features from access to digital goods: Xbox Services terms. Never promise that every perk, reward or add-on will appear for every profile.

Internet and offline requirements
The Home Xbox is designed to let eligible shared games run without the owner actively signed in and, where the title supports it, offline. The non-Home Xbox normally requires the owning account to be signed in, an internet connection for license or subscription verification, and an active entitlement.
Streaming or cloud gaming has additional sign-in and internet requirements. Installed-console play is the scenario covered by the Home Xbox arrangement.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S compatibility
The rules cover compatible Xbox One and Xbox Series digital games, including many cross-generation purchases. The result still depends on the game’s license and edition:
- Xbox One-to-Xbox One and Series-to-Series sharing generally follow the same Home Xbox model.
- Xbox One-to-Series use depends on backward compatibility, Smart Delivery or the specific cross-generation entitlement.
- Backward-compatible Xbox 360 titles and their add-ons may have different licensing details.
- A game with separate Xbox One and Series editions may not grant both versions automatically.
Check the individual store listing when an edition or add-on is unclear.

Digital games versus physical discs
Home Xbox sharing applies to digital licensing; it does not duplicate a disc license. A disc-based game normally requires the disc in the console as proof of ownership. Two consoles cannot generally play one physical copy at the same time unless the second console has its own disc or a separate digital entitlement.
Do both people need Game Pass?
Not necessarily. If the other person’s console is the owner’s Home Xbox, that profile may use eligible shared Game Pass games there. The owner uses the subscription on the second Xbox while signed in.
Online multiplayer and other benefits depend on the current Game Pass plan, the game and account restrictions. Verify the current plan terms rather than relying on older “Xbox Live Gold” guides.

Protect the owner account
Giving someone your password can expose payment methods, purchase history, messages, saved credentials, security settings and the ability to change account information. Sign in only long enough to set Home Xbox, then remove the account from the other console when appropriate. Remove saved payment methods and enable strong security before sharing with anyone outside your household.

Best Value
Home Xbox is not a Microsoft Family group
Family groups manage consent, age limits, spending and privacy; they do not replace Home Xbox licensing or merge two people into one profile. For child purchase controls, see Microsoft’s Xbox family purchase guidance.
Changing the Home Xbox
An account has only one Home Xbox at a time. Designating a different console moves the local-sharing and offline license to that console; the former Home Xbox loses that special status. Change it deliberately, especially when sharing with a friend, and check the current limit in the Xbox interface or current support documentation because the exact allowance can change.
Troubleshooting common problems
The second person is asked to buy the game
- Confirm they are using their own profile, not a guest profile.
- Check Settings → General → Personalization → My home Xbox on the intended console.
- Verify the title is a digital purchase or an eligible Game Pass game.
- Confirm the subscription is active and the game remains in the catalog.
The game is visible but will not launch
- Confirm the owner still owns the game or has an active subscription.
- Connect both consoles to the internet.
- On the Home Xbox, sign in with the owner account and verify the Home Xbox setting.
- On the other console, sign in with the owner account.
- Restart the console and game to refresh entitlement checks.
The owner is signed out
Using one profile actively on both consoles can cause interruptions, and changing credentials can invalidate sessions. Move the second player to their own profile and use Home Xbox sharing instead.
A save or achievement is missing
Check the active gamertag before launching. A single profile has one cloud-save and achievement identity per game; progress made by two people on that profile may be combined and cannot always be separated afterward.
