But that proves the arrangement is possible, not that it is safe for every storage workload: TrueNAS warns against virtualized deployments for production or critical data and specifically cautions against building a pool on virtual disks.
What combining TrueNAS and Proxmox changes
Putting TrueNAS inside a Proxmox VM consolidates the compute hosts: Proxmox runs on the physical machine, and TrueNAS runs as a guest alongside any other virtual machines or services. It does not make the storage layer disappear. The TrueNAS VM still needs reliable access to its pool drives, enough allocated resources, and a recovery path that works if the Proxmox host fails.

Whether the change is worthwhile depends on more than the number of machines. Direct access to physical drives or a storage controller, resource contention, failure domains, and backup and recovery complexity all matter. Power, noise, cost, and performance improvements should be treated as measured outcomes of a particular build, not as guaranteed benefits of virtualization.

Yes. The TrueNAS installation documentation lists Proxmox among the virtual-machine platforms on which TrueNAS can be installed. Its example minimum VM settings include 8 GB of RAM and separate virtual disks for the operating system and data. That is an installation example, not a complete sizing recommendation or endorsement of virtual disks for a production storage pool. TrueNAS installation documentation

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
What TrueNAS says about production use
TrueNAS’s Hardware Guide draws an important distinction between a proof of concept and a dependable storage deployment. It states: “While you can deploy TrueNAS in a virtual environment, it is not safe for regular deployment of TrueNAS when storing production or critical data.” The guide also says that using virtual disks for a pool in its proof-of-concept configuration is unsupported and might result in data corruption. This is TrueNAS’s guidance about the configuration; it does not establish that a particular virtualized system has failed. TrueNAS Hardware Guide

How disks should reach the TrueNAS VM
For a virtualized setup, TrueNAS advises passing physical disks through to the VM, or passing through the complete storage controller when possible. This gives the guest a direct path to storage hardware rather than presenting pool drives as ordinary virtual disks. Controller passthrough depends on platform support, such as Intel VT-d or AMD-Vi, and on the actual host and controller topology.
- Identify the storage layout. Work out which physical drives belong to the TrueNAS pool and whether they are connected through a dedicated controller or a controller shared with the host.
- Check passthrough support. Confirm that the CPU, motherboard, firmware, and storage controller support the required PCIe passthrough features, including VT-d or AMD-Vi where applicable.
- Choose the passthrough boundary. Pass through the full controller when the hardware arrangement permits it; otherwise, determine whether the individual physical disks can be passed through safely. Avoid treating virtual disks as equivalent to direct physical access.
- Plan for recovery before moving data. Document how the pool will be accessed and restored if the Proxmox host, controller, or VM configuration is unavailable. Keep backups separate from the host and pool they are intended to protect.
How much RAM and storage does the host need?
TrueNAS’s current Hardware Guide lists a minimum physical configuration of an x86_64 CPU, 8 GB of memory, a 20 GB SSD boot device, and two identically sized devices for a single pool. Those are baseline TrueNAS figures, not a guarantee that the same machine can run Proxmox, a TrueNAS VM, and other workloads comfortably. The installation guide’s example of 8 GB RAM for a VM likewise does not size a combined production workload. TrueNAS Hardware Guide
