Can Travelers Get an Ebola Vaccine? Who Qualifies for Ervebo in 2026

Most ordinary tourists cannot obtain an Ebola vaccine simply for an international trip, and they usually do not need one. In the United States, CDC pre-exposure vaccination is aimed at adults aged 18 or older whose jobs create a defined possibility of Ebola-virus exposure, including outbreak responders, staff at designated Ebola treatment centers and certain high-containment laboratory workers.

The vaccine is Ervebo. It is supplied through public-health channels rather than ordinary pharmacies. A traveler whose deployment involves Ebola patient care, specimen handling or outbreak response should arrange an assessment through the employer, public-health authority or a specialist occupational/travel-medicine clinic.

The short answer for travelers

A normal holiday, business trip or sightseeing itinerary does not generally qualify someone for routine Ebola vaccination. CDC’s Ebola Vaccine Information Statement says: “There is little risk of catching Ebola virus disease for travelers or the general public who have not cared for or been in close contact with someone infected with Ebola virus.”

Eligibility depends on the exposure you are expected to face, not simply the country on your passport or itinerary. A person traveling to an area with an outbreak as an assigned responder may qualify, while a tourist visiting the same country generally will not.

Country conditions can change rapidly. A destination may require screening, routing through specified airports or avoidance of particular provinces without creating a general vaccination requirement for visitors.

What the Ebola vaccine is—and what it covers

Ervebo is the only licensed, WHO-prequalified option for EBOV

As of the World Health Organization’s September 9, 2026 guidance, Ervebo is the only licensed and WHO-prequalified vaccine specifically available for Ebola virus disease caused by Ebola virus (EBOV), formerly called Zaire ebolavirus. It is a single-dose, live-attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus vaccine. The vaccine uses a vesicular-stomatitis-virus platform carrying an Ebola gene; it does not contain whole Ebola virus and cannot cause Ebola disease.

“Ebola” is a group of viruses, not one single virus. There are no licensed vaccines for disease caused by Bundibugyo virus, Sudan virus or Taï Forest virus. WHO says Ervebo should be used for Bundibugyo virus disease only within a research protocol while evidence of protection in humans remains insufficient. It should not be advertised or understood as a universal vaccine against every orthoebolavirus.

Age on the product label is not the same as occupational eligibility

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration indication includes people aged 12 months and older. That does not mean every child or adult traveler can request a dose. CDC’s U.S. pre-exposure occupational recommendation begins at age 18, and the public-health program is focused on people with specified work-related exposure. Pediatric decisions require an appropriate public-health or specialist clinical assessment.

Who can receive pre-exposure Ervebo in the United States?

CDC identifies three main occupational groups for pre-exposure vaccination of adults aged 18 or older:

1. Outbreak responders

Adults traveling to an area with an active Ebola virus disease outbreak as part of an official response may be eligible. This category concerns an assigned response role, not a traveler who independently chooses to visit an outbreak area.

2. Personnel at designated special-pathogen treatment centers

Healthcare workers at federally designated U.S. special-pathogen treatment centers can qualify when they are involved—or are expected to be involved—in caring for or transporting a patient suspected or confirmed to have Ebola virus disease.

3. High-containment and response-network laboratory staff

Laboratory personnel and other staff working at biosafety-level 4 facilities or Laboratory Response Network facilities that might handle specimens containing live Ebola virus are included in CDC’s occupational recommendation.

ERVEBO is not commercially marketed in the United States. CDC holds doses in the Strategic National Stockpile and makes them available through the public-health system. A retail pharmacy cannot normally order it for a customer who wants extra protection before a vacation.

Tourist, deployment and resident scenarios compared

Situation Expected exposure How access works Typical vaccine decision
Ordinary tourist or business traveler No planned care of Ebola patients, handling of infectious specimens or outbreak-response duties Routine travel clinic or pharmacy; Ervebo is generally not stocked for this purpose Usually no pre-exposure vaccination
Official outbreak responder May work in an active Ebola response area and encounter patients or contaminated materials Employer, response authority and public-health channels coordinate access May qualify if the person is an adult and meets CDC or local program criteria
Healthcare worker at a designated treatment center Possible care or transport of suspected or confirmed Ebola patients Facility occupational-health and public-health program May qualify under CDC’s adult occupational recommendation
BSL-4 or eligible Laboratory Response Network worker Possible handling of specimens containing live Ebola virus Laboratory employer and public-health authorities May qualify under CDC’s adult occupational recommendation
Healthcare or frontline worker in an at-risk country Frontline duties in a setting where outbreaks could occur National programs, WHO-supported campaigns, the International Coordinating Group stockpile or Gavi-supported preventive programs May be offered according to the country’s risk and program rules
Child or adolescent traveler Depends on the actual role and exposure; age alone does not create a travel indication Specialist or public-health assessment FDA labeling starts at 12 months, while CDC’s U.S. occupational recommendation starts at 18

How a deployment traveler should arrange vaccination

  1. Define the assignment. Ask whether your written duties include outbreak response, Ebola-patient care or transport, or handling specimens that could contain live virus. A destination name by itself is not enough.
  2. Check the current public-health notice. Review CDC destination and outbreak information, your national health authority’s notice and instructions from the response organization. The status of an outbreak and the rules for entering or leaving an area can change between booking and departure.
  3. Use the responsible organization’s pathway. Contact your employer’s occupational-health service, deployment medical unit, designated treatment center, laboratory safety office or public-health authority. In the United States, these channels coordinate access to stockpiled vaccine.
  4. Complete a clinical screening. The clinician should review allergies, current illness, pregnancy or breastfeeding, immune status, age and the actual probability of Ebola exposure. The decision weighs the risk from vaccination against the risk of disease.
  5. Follow the post-vaccination instructions. Ervebo is a single-dose vaccine, but vaccination does not replace protective equipment, infection-control training, specimen procedures or other deployment safeguards.
  6. Carry the program’s documentation. Keep the vaccination record supplied by the occupational or public-health program and follow any destination-specific entry or screening instructions. A private pharmacy receipt would not substitute for the official process.

Medical conditions and precautions that require review

Severe allergy

CDC product information lists a severe allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis, to a component such as rice protein as a reason not to vaccinate. Anyone with a serious vaccine or component allergy needs a clinician’s assessment rather than a walk-in dose.

Acute illness

Acute systemic illness is a reason to defer vaccination at that visit. The dose can be reconsidered after the illness resolves, provided the person still meets the exposure-based indication.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Because Ervebo is live attenuated and pregnancy data are limited, pregnancy requires an individualized benefit–risk discussion. Breastfeeding also calls for clinician review rather than an automatic yes or no. The relevant question is whether the anticipated Ebola exposure justifies vaccination at that time.

Immune compromise

CDC Yellow Book guidance notes that safety and efficacy have not been adequately assessed in immunocompromised adults. Clinicians should weigh the person’s immune condition, the urgency and intensity of the potential exposure and available alternatives.

After vaccination

CDC advises using barrier methods to prevent pregnancy for two months after vaccination. Current product information also advises avoiding close contact with certain high-risk people and avoiding livestock exposure to vaccine-virus materials for up to six weeks. The vaccinating program should explain exactly which contacts and materials are relevant to the recipient’s circumstances.

How WHO and other countries use Ervebo

WHO recommends Ervebo for Ebola virus disease outbreak response and for preventive vaccination of healthcare and frontline workers in countries considered at risk of future outbreaks. These recommendations support organized programs; they are not a standing invitation for every visitor to request a dose.

During an outbreak, affected countries can obtain vaccine through the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision global stockpile. At-risk countries can request preventive doses through Gavi’s preventive Ebola vaccination program. National ministries of health decide how campaigns are organized, which workers are prioritized and where vaccination is delivered.

Availability therefore differs from country to country. A dose may be accessible through a national campaign or response team while remaining unavailable through commercial travel clinics. Travelers should ask the health authority responsible for the deployment rather than assume that a dose offered in one country can be obtained in another.

Do you need an Ebola vaccine for Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo or South Sudan?

Traveling to Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) or South Sudan does not automatically create a routine vaccine recommendation for tourists. The relevant factors remain the current outbreak situation, your itinerary and whether you will have a professional role involving patients, specimens or response operations.

CDC’s September 11, 2026 traveler notice describes special measures for people recently in these countries. Recent DRC travelers may face temporary restrictions on U.S. commercial flights. Travelers from Uganda or South Sudan may be routed through designated U.S. airports for public-health screening. CDC’s outbreak information also advises avoiding specified high-risk provinces and using enhanced precautions elsewhere.

Those measures can change quickly and are separate from a general tourist vaccination program. Check the CDC destination page, your national health authority and a qualified travel-medicine clinician immediately before departure. If your plans include a high-risk province, a healthcare facility or an official response assignment, obtain the organization’s instructions before you travel rather than relying on a retail clinic.

Why ordinary travelers usually face little Ebola risk

Ebola transmission risk for the general traveling public is considered low when people have not cared for or been in close contact with an infected person. That is why CDC’s vaccine information focuses on defined occupational exposure instead of offering routine doses to all visitors to an affected region.

The distinction matters operationally. A tourist who remains outside patient-care and specimen-handling activities is in a different risk category from a clinician transporting a suspected case or a laboratorian processing live-virus material. Vaccination decisions should follow that exposure assessment, while travelers should still obey current destination warnings, screening directions and any restrictions issued during an outbreak.

Answers to common questions

Can I get an Ebola shot at a pharmacy?

In the United States, generally no. Ervebo is not commercially marketed and is held in the Strategic National Stockpile for CDC-coordinated use. Occupational-health and public-health channels determine access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can healthcare workers get vaccinated before deployment?

Healthcare workers may qualify when their assignment involves caring for or transporting suspected or confirmed Ebola patients, or when they are designated outbreak responders. A worker with no such expected exposure should ask occupational health whether the assignment meets the applicable criteria.

Does Ervebo protect against Sudan or Bundibugyo virus?

It is licensed for EBOV disease. There are no licensed vaccines for Sudan, Bundibugyo or Taï Forest virus diseases, and WHO limits Ervebo use for Bundibugyo to research protocols while protection evidence is insufficient.

Can a person under 18 receive Ervebo?

The FDA indication includes people aged 12 months and older, but CDC’s U.S. pre-exposure occupational recommendation starts at 18. A younger person would need an individual specialist or public-health decision tied to the actual exposure.

Does vaccination remove the need for protective equipment?

No. Even when vaccination is indicated, deployment teams still require infection-control procedures, protective equipment, training and compliance with current public-health instructions.
