UPI is not accepted at every shop, and it is not a general-purpose wallet for visitors without an eligible Indian account.
Who can use UPI in Qatar?
Qatar’s UPI acceptance is a cross-border merchant payment service: payment comes from an Indian bank account through a UPI app. Before travelling, link the eligible account in the app and activate its UPI Global or UPI International feature for that specific account. To link an account, NPCI says you register through a payment service provider (PSP) and use a mobile number registered with your bank that matches the number verified in the UPI app. If those numbers do not match, the app may not be able to fetch the account. If you are an NRI or use an international number
NPCI separately supports eligible NRIs using NRE or NRO accounts with international mobile numbers, subject to supported country codes, banks and apps, and the bank’s terms. Qatar’s +974 code appears on NPCI’s list, but that does not mean every bank and app combination is supported. Check the current NPCI international-number support list and confirm with your bank before relying on it.

Where can tourists pay with UPI in Qatar?
Acceptance depends on the merchant and its payment network. QNB announced on 25 February 2025 that it had enabled QR UPI acceptance for merchants acquired by QNB, describing a network that included the airport, hotels, tourist attractions, restaurants and retail outlets. That announcement applies to QNB-acquired merchants, not every business in Qatar. Read QNB’s announcement.
On 22 September 2025, QNB reported that Qatar Duty Free had become the first merchant live on UPI in Qatar, using QNB POS terminals powered by NETSTARS. See QNB’s Qatar Duty Free announcement.

NIPL currently lists Qatar merchant examples including the Museum of Islamic Art, National Museum of Qatar, Mathaf, Qatar Duty Free, Tim Hortons, Fat Burger, Sushi Library, TGI Fridays, Burger King, Lulu Hypermarket, Zara, Safari Supermarkets and Carrefour. Commercial Bank announced an agreement in September 2025 to enable UPI across its Qatar merchant network. An agreement signals a planned or ongoing rollout; it does not establish that every merchant in that network is already accepting UPI. Its announcement is at Commercial Bank’s UPI news page.

How to make a UPI payment in Qatar
- Before the trip: In your supported UPI app, link the eligible bank account and enable UPI Global or UPI International for that account. Make sure the app can access the internet.
- At the merchant: Look for a BHIM UPI or network-partner acceptance mark, and ask staff whether UPI is available before you begin checkout.
- Scan and check: Scan the merchant’s QR code in your UPI app. Review the amount in Qatari riyals (QAR) and Indian rupees (INR), the conversion rate and any applicable fees shown in the app.
- Confirm only if the terms are clear: Approve the payment in the app after checking the final amount. NPCI’s international UPI guidance directs customers to review the currency amounts, exchange rate and applicable fees before confirming.
UPI is different from Qatar’s visitor wallet
Qatar Mobile Payment (QMP) is a separate domestic wallet, not another name for UPI. For QMP visitor registration, the Qatar Central Bank lists a passport and entry visa as identity documents, along with a smartphone with internet access and an active number from a Qatar telecom provider. Those requirements apply to QMP registration; they should not be treated as UPI requirements. Details are on the Qatar Central Bank’s QMP page.

Can I use Google Pay or PhonePe in Qatar?
The app name alone does not establish eligibility. You need an eligible Indian bank account linked in a supported UPI app, international payments enabled for that account and a merchant that accepts UPI. Check support with your bank and app, then ask the merchant before paying.

Can a tourist without an Indian-linked UPI account use UPI?
The official information describes Qatar UPI payments as payments from Indian bank accounts through UPI-powered apps. It does not establish that a visitor without an eligible Indian account can register for UPI in Qatar. NPCI’s UPI Global guidance and international-number support list describe the relevant account and support conditions.
Do I need a Qatari SIM for UPI?
The Qatar telecom number requirement cited by the regulator is for QMP visitor registration, not UPI. For UPI, the key checks are the linked account, the app’s international-payment setup and the bank’s mobile-number verification. Your app will also need internet access to complete a payment.

Do all shops in Qatar accept UPI?
No. The available merchant information covers particular acquiring networks and listed examples, not universal acceptance. Confirm at the specific shop before checkout.
What exchange rate or fee will I pay?
There is no single rate or fee established for every bank and app. Check the QAR and INR amounts, conversion rate and applicable fees on the payment confirmation screen, and consult your issuing bank’s terms before approving.
Which banks and apps support an international number?
Support depends on the country code, bank and app, and NPCI’s list can change. Check its current international-number support list for your specific combination and verify with your bank.
