The ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X are Windows 11 handheld gaming PCs with Xbox integration. You can install compatible Windows PC games locally, including games from the Xbox PC app and other PC storefronts. An Xbox console game installs locally only when a Windows PC version exists and your account owns the required entitlement, most clearly through Xbox Play Anywhere. Console-only games are accessed through Xbox Cloud Gaming or Xbox Remote Play instead.
Your saves, add-ons and achievements can follow you between console and handheld for eligible Play Anywhere titles. Cloud and Remote Play broaden the library further, but both depend on network quality and, in some cases, a subscription or an Xbox console configured for streaming.

What the Xbox handheld actually is
Microsoft and ASUS announced the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as Windows 11 handhelds. They are not Xbox consoles in a smaller shell; they are handheld PCs built around Windows, Xbox services and controller-first navigation. Windows access means you can download games from your preferred storefronts, install ordinary Windows applications, use Discord, watch Twitch and run supported mods.
That distinction answers the most common question: an Xbox badge does not automatically turn every Xbox console purchase into a native handheld installation. The game still needs a compatible Windows build, and your account needs the right license for that build.

Three ways to play on an Xbox Ally
| Method | Where the game runs | What you need | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native PC installation | On the handheld itself | A compatible Windows PC version, storage and enough device performance | Offline play and the lowest possible streaming latency |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | On Microsoft’s cloud servers | A supported game, supported region and reliable internet; subscription or separate purchase rules apply | Console titles without a Windows version and games you do not want to install |
| Xbox Remote Play | On your Xbox One or Xbox Series console | A supported console, remote features enabled, internet and the console powered on or in Sleep mode | Your own installed console library, including titles unavailable through cloud streaming |
Can you install PC games locally?
Yes. Since both handhelds run Windows 11, they can install compatible PC games locally. The Xbox PC app provides access to Xbox PC games and PC Game Pass titles, while Windows also supports other leading PC storefronts. Microsoft’s aggregated library view can bring together installed games from Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, Battle.net and other PC storefronts, so your library does not have to come from one launcher.
Installing from the Xbox PC app
- Connect the handheld to Wi-Fi and sign in to Windows with the Microsoft account that owns the game or subscription.
- Open the Xbox app for Windows and sign in if prompted.
- Find a game marked as available for PC, or browse the PC Game Pass catalog if you have that subscription.
- Select Install, choose the storage location and allow the download to finish.
- Launch the game from the Xbox app or the handheld’s game library. On first launch, check controller, resolution and power settings.
Installing from other storefronts
A Windows handheld can run other Windows game clients as well. Download the client from its legitimate publisher, install it, sign in and install games as you would on a desktop PC. Steam and similar storefronts therefore work when the launcher and the game support Windows and the handheld’s controls. A game bought in one storefront does not automatically grant a license in another; ownership remains tied to the account and store where you purchased it.
Windows flexibility also means you can install utilities, chat clients and mods, but compatibility is still game-specific. A title may launch correctly yet require a mouse, keyboard, text scaling or graphics adjustment before it feels comfortable on a small touchscreen-and-controller device.
Do Xbox console purchases work on the ROG Xbox Ally?
Sometimes. The decisive question is whether the game has a Windows PC edition and whether your account owns an entitlement that covers both Xbox and PC. Xbox Play Anywhere is the clearest case: eligible games can be played on Xbox console, Windows PC and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost. Xbox says Play Anywhere carries your saves, add-ons and achievements through the same Xbox account. In January 2026, Xbox reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games.
If you bought a console title that has no Windows version, the purchase cannot create a native Windows installation on the Ally. You must use Xbox Cloud Gaming when that game is available there, or stream it from your own console with Remote Play. A console purchase also should not be assumed to cover a separate PC-store edition unless the publisher and Xbox entitlement explicitly say so.
How to check a game before downloading
- Open the game’s Xbox store listing or your Xbox library and look for a PC version.
- Look for the Xbox Play Anywhere designation or another explicit cross-platform entitlement.
- Check whether the listing identifies the game as cloud playable if you plan to stream it.
- Review the handheld compatibility information before committing to a large download.
When a title appears only as an Xbox console product, treat local installation as unavailable. Cloud or Remote Play is the appropriate route.
Can you stream Xbox games without downloading them?
Yes. Xbox Cloud Gaming can stream hundreds of Game Pass games and select owned games to the handheld. The exact catalog is not universal: availability varies by game, supported device, region, internet connection and subscription requirements. Xbox also notes that cloud-playable games outside Game Pass may be sold separately, so owning an Xbox console version does not by itself guarantee cloud access.

What cloud play feels like
The handheld receives a live video stream and sends your controller input back to the service. You avoid a large install and can start a supported game quickly, but image quality and responsiveness depend on the connection. Wi-Fi congestion, high latency or an unstable signal can cause blur, input delay or a dropped session. Cloud play is therefore useful for testing a game, conserving storage or reaching a console-only title, but it is not equivalent to an offline installation.
Cloud Gaming checklist
- Use a supported region and a game included in the current cloud catalog or separately eligible for streaming.
- Sign in with the Xbox account that owns the game or the required subscription.
- Prefer a stable, low-latency Wi-Fi connection; a fast connection that fluctuates is still a poor streaming connection.
- Keep the handheld connected to power for long sessions, because streaming still uses the display, wireless radio and processor continuously.
How Xbox Remote Play differs from Cloud Gaming
Remote Play streams games installed on your own Xbox One or Xbox Series console. The console does the rendering, while the Ally displays the stream and sends your controls back over the internet. This can expose games that are not in the cloud catalog, provided the game is installed on your console and your account is allowed to play it.
Remote Play requirements
- An Xbox One or Xbox Series console with remote features enabled.
- The console turned on or set to Sleep mode so it can accept a remote connection.
- A supported handheld and an internet connection for both the console and the handheld.
- The Xbox account and permissions needed to launch the installed game.
Remote Play is different from buying a PC copy. It does not transfer the game to Windows, and the console remains occupied while you stream. If someone is using the television connected to the Xbox, Remote Play may still be possible, but the console’s active session and network conditions determine the experience.

Microsoft’s Handheld Compatibility Program evaluates controller input, iconography, text entry, display resolution and legibility. These checks address whether a game is practical on a handheld rather than merely whether it can technically start.

Microsoft Game Dev editor in chief Will Tuttle described games labeled Handheld Optimized as ready to go. Expect the game to recognize handheld controls and present interface elements that are usable at the device’s resolution, although individual graphics settings and driver updates can still affect performance.
Mostly Compatible
Mostly Compatible games may need minor setting changes. Typical adjustments include selecting a controller layout, reducing text or menu scaling problems, changing resolution, or tuning graphics presets to suit the handheld’s power mode.
Windows Performance Fit
Microsoft also reports performance targets under Windows Performance Fit. Should play great targets an average of 60 frames per second or better on the device, while Should play well targets 30 frames per second or better. These are labels and targets, not guarantees for every scene, driver, game update or power mode. A label should set expectations, not replace checking the game’s current settings and patches.

Do saves carry over from Xbox console to the handheld?
For Play Anywhere games, yes: Xbox says saves, add-ons and achievements sync through your Xbox account across Xbox, PC and supported handhelds. Start the game on the Ally with the same account used on the console and allow synchronization to complete.
For games outside Play Anywhere, save behavior depends on the game and storefront. A Windows version may use Xbox cloud saves, a publisher account or a separate PC-save system; a console-only purchase does not create a Windows save simply because you stream it. Cloud Gaming and Remote Play normally continue the console or service session rather than creating a native PC installation.
Choosing the right method for a specific game
- Want offline play? Find a compatible Windows version and install it locally. Confirm storage, controller support and the compatibility label first.
- Own the Xbox version and see Play Anywhere? Install the PC edition through the Xbox app and use the same Xbox account for synchronized progress.
- No PC version, but the game is cloud playable? Use Xbox Cloud Gaming and verify the region, catalog and subscription or purchase requirement.
- The game is installed on your Xbox but absent from cloud? Enable Remote Play and leave the console on or in Sleep mode.
- No suitable local, cloud or Remote Play route? The Ally cannot turn that console-only title into a native Windows game.
Common problems and fixes
The game appears on Xbox but not in the PC app
Check whether the title has a Windows edition and whether your purchase includes Play Anywhere. A console-only license will not expose a PC installer. If the game is cloud eligible, use its cloud option instead.
The game installs but controls or text are awkward
Look for the Handheld Optimized or Mostly Compatible label, then open the game’s controller and display settings. Reduce interface scale problems, select a gamepad profile and use a resolution the handheld can display cleanly.
Cloud play is blurry or delayed
Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point, reduce competing traffic and test again on a steadier connection. If the problem persists, install the Windows version locally or use Remote Play from a console on a stronger network.

Progress is missing
Verify that the same Xbox account is active on the console and handheld. For non-Play Anywhere games, check the title’s own save-sync method; not every console and PC release shares saves.
