Yes, the Surface Laptop Ultra can run PC games. Microsoft positions it as an ARM-based Windows laptop with an NVIDIA RTX Spark Superchip, ray tracing, DLSS, NVIDIA Reflex in supported titles and a 120 Hz display. A Windows Central hands-on report also saw Fortnite, Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle running smoothly. The catch is compatibility: this is Windows on Arm, so a powerful GPU does not guarantee that every game, launcher or anti-cheat system will work. Check your exact games before spending the starting $2,599 MSRP.
What “can run games” means for the Surface Laptop Ultra
The Surface Laptop Ultra is best understood as a professional and creator-focused Windows computer that also has serious gaming hardware, rather than as a conventional gaming laptop. Microsoft announced preorders on October 7, 2026, with availability beginning October 16 and a starting MSRP of $2,599. The actual price depends on region, configuration and stock.

Its graphics features are substantial on paper. Microsoft lists an NVIDIA RTX Spark Superchip, hardware ray tracing, DLSS upscaling and NVIDIA Reflex support in compatible games, plus a 120 Hz screen. Those are capabilities, not a promise that every title will run at a particular resolution or frame rate. Microsoft’s own wording limits the graphics features to “supported titles.”

The other defining fact is the processor platform: Windows on Arm. Traditional Windows games compiled for x86 or x64 can sometimes run through Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer, but emulation does not make every dependency compatible. A game can launch successfully and still have poor performance, missing features or an unusable anti-cheat service.

What has actually been demonstrated
Named games in a hands-on demonstration
In an October 7, 2026 hands-on report, Windows Central said it saw Fortnite, Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle running smoothly. The report noted that many demonstrations used Prism emulation. That is meaningful evidence that the laptop can play demanding modern games, including games that were not necessarily built natively for Arm.
It is not a retail-unit benchmark suite. The report did not provide a comprehensive compatibility list, an independently measured frame-rate table or a test of every configuration and power mode. “Smooth” is a qualitative observation, not an FPS guarantee. Your result can change with the game build, graphics preset, resolution, driver version, cooling conditions, plugged-in versus battery operation and the amount of memory and storage in the configuration you buy.
What the demonstrations do and do not prove
- They do show: some demanding games can operate on the Surface Laptop Ultra, including through Prism.
- They do not show: that all Windows games work, that every anti-cheat system loads, or that a specific game will meet your preferred frame-rate target.
- They do not establish: an average FPS number that can be applied to other games or configurations.

Why Windows on Arm changes the gaming question
Prism emulation can bridge the instruction-set gap
Most Windows PC games were written for x86 or x64 processors. Windows on Arm uses Microsoft’s Prism technology to translate many of those applications so they can run on an Arm system. This is why a game may install and start even when the developer has not released a native Arm build.
Emulation adds another layer between the game and the hardware. It can affect CPU overhead, startup behavior, mod tools, launchers and copy-protection components. A title that starts through Prism is therefore only “compatible enough to launch” until you verify playability at your target settings.
Anti-cheat is a separate gate
Microsoft’s Windows on Arm guidance warns that games using anti-cheat drivers that have not been updated for Arm may not work. Kernel-level or low-level anti-cheat components can require an Arm-compatible driver even when the game itself runs correctly under emulation. This is especially important for competitive multiplayer games, where a failed anti-cheat service can block online play entirely.

Graphics APIs can also block a game
Microsoft specifically flags applications that depend on OpenGL versions above 3.3 as a possible compatibility problem on Windows on Arm. A game’s store page may list Windows support while its actual rendering path, middleware or launcher still depends on a component that is unavailable or incomplete on Arm. Check the developer’s current compatibility notes rather than relying on the operating system label alone.
Use this checklist before you buy
1. Write down your must-play games
Start with the games you would regret losing, not with a general statement such as “PC games.” Include single-player releases, older titles, modded games, launchers and competitive games. Compatibility is decided per title and sometimes per mode: a campaign may work while online play fails because of anti-cheat.
2. Check current Windows on Arm status
For each game, look for a current developer statement, official support page or recent owner reports that identify Windows on Arm support. Prefer information that names the game version and anti-cheat system. A result from an older Windows build may no longer apply after a game or driver update.
3. Identify the launcher and protection stack
Confirm whether the game requires a separate launcher, hardware-accelerated browser component, DRM service or anti-cheat driver. Each layer must work. If a developer says the game is playable only through a specific launcher version, treat that requirement as part of the compatibility check.
4. Check graphics API dependencies
Look for DirectX, Vulkan or OpenGL requirements in the official system specifications. Microsoft’s stated OpenGL warning is specifically about versions above 3.3. That does not mean every OpenGL game fails, but it is a reason to seek title-specific evidence before ordering.

5. Separate launchability from performance
Ask two different questions: “Will it start?” and “Will it meet my target experience?” A game may boot through Prism but require reduced resolution, a lower preset or an upscaler. For a 120 Hz display, decide whether you need 120 frames per second, a stable 60, or simply a playable cinematic experience. No general FPS figure has been established for the Surface Laptop Ultra, so do not treat a demonstration as a universal benchmark.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
6. Check the exact configuration
Verify memory, storage, display and regional pricing on the configuration you intend to buy. Up to 128 GB of unified memory is a maximum, not an entry-level promise. Microsoft lists storage options up to 2 TB and says storage is upgradeable, but the installed capacity still determines how many large games you can keep available immediately.
Will popular types of games work?
Modern single-player games
The reported demonstrations of Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle suggest that some graphically demanding single-player games can run well. They should still be treated as examples, not a compatibility guarantee for every recent release. Check the exact title, patch and graphics requirements.
Competitive multiplayer games
These are the highest-risk category because anti-cheat drivers can be the deciding factor. Even excellent GPU performance cannot overcome an Arm-incompatible kernel driver. Verify online and anti-cheat support explicitly; do not infer it from the fact that the game’s offline executable launches.
Older games and mod-heavy libraries
Older x86 titles may benefit from Prism, but mods, injectors, fan patches and legacy launchers can introduce additional compatibility problems. If your library depends on community tools, check those tools separately. A clean, unmodified game installation is not evidence that a modded setup will work.

Games using advanced OpenGL paths
Titles that rely on OpenGL above version 3.3 deserve extra scrutiny because Microsoft identifies that dependency as a possible Windows on Arm failure point. Ask the developer or community whether the game can use a supported rendering backend.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gaming performance: what the 120 Hz screen does—and does not—tell you
A 120 Hz display can make supported games feel more responsive than a 60 Hz panel, but refresh rate is a ceiling for display updates, not a performance measurement. If a game renders at 45 frames per second, the panel cannot turn that into 120 rendered frames. Conversely, a high frame rate is useful only when the game, driver and input path remain stable.
DLSS can improve the balance between image quality and performance in games that support it, while ray tracing increases visual effects workload. NVIDIA Reflex is intended to reduce latency in supported titles. The operative words are “in supported titles”: the features must be implemented by the game and exposed correctly by its Arm-compatible software path.
Battery operation can also change the result. A demonstration performed while plugged in should not be used to predict unplugged performance. Before buying for travel, seek evidence for the same title in the power mode you expect to use.

How to evaluate the laptop against a gaming-focused alternative
The right choice depends on what “gaming laptop” means in your budget. The Surface Laptop Ultra may appeal if one machine must handle professional or creator work during the day and gaming afterward. Microsoft also highlights repair guides, replacement parts and upgradeable storage, which can matter for a long-lived work computer.
Best Value
- With 16 GB LPDDR5X of memory, users can run many programs without losing execution
- The 13.5" 2256 x 1504 screen provides a great movie watching experience
- 512 GB SSD is enough to store your essential documents and files, favorite songs, movies and pictures
- 18.50 Hours battery run time helps you stay unwired and work longer non-stop
A gaming-focused laptop is usually the safer category when your priorities are maximum game compatibility, predictable driver support, competitive multiplayer access and clear performance-per-dollar comparisons. The available evidence does not provide a direct benchmark comparison against a specific competitor, so make that decision using your own must-play list and local prices rather than an assumed FPS advantage.
- Favor the Surface Laptop Ultra when its professional workload, Arm efficiency, high-end memory options and creator features are important and your games have confirmed compatibility.
- Favor a conventional gaming laptop when gaming is the primary job, your library includes anti-cheat-heavy multiplayer titles, or you need independently documented FPS results for a fixed budget.
- Wait or verify first when one unconfirmed game is essential. A $2,599 starting purchase is difficult to justify if that title is blocked by an anti-cheat or graphics API dependency.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistake: treating “Windows PC” as “works on every Windows PC”
Windows on Arm is still Windows, but its application and driver compatibility rules differ from x86 laptops. Read the Arm-specific requirements, not just the generic Windows system requirements.
Mistake: assuming a smooth demo is a benchmark
The Windows Central observations are useful examples, but they are not a broad test suite. Look for evidence using your game, preferred resolution, graphics preset and power mode.

Modern games can consume substantial space. Choose the installed capacity deliberately, and confirm how the advertised upgradeable storage works for the exact model. Up to 2 TB is an option range, not a guarantee that every unit ships with 2 TB.
Mistake: buying before checking regional details
The $2,599 figure is Microsoft’s announced starting MSRP. Regional prices, taxes, configurations, delivery dates and stock can differ, and availability was announced to begin October 16, 2026. Confirm the current local offer at checkout.
A practical decision rule
- Reject the laptop if any essential game is confirmed to require an Arm-incompatible anti-cheat driver.
- Investigate further if an essential game depends on OpenGL above 3.3 or an unsupported launcher component.
- For games that pass those checks, find title-specific evidence of playability at your desired resolution and frame-rate target.
- Compare the exact Surface configuration and local price with a conventional gaming laptop, giving extra weight to compatibility if gaming is your main use.
- Buy only after deciding whether the Surface’s professional and creator advantages justify accepting more title-by-title uncertainty.
Bottom line
The Surface Laptop Ultra can run games, and current demonstrations show it handling Fortnite, Alan Wake 2 and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle smoothly. Its RTX features and 120 Hz display make it more than an occasional-gaming machine. However, it is still an Arm-based Windows computer: Prism emulation, anti-cheat drivers, graphics APIs, launchers and updates determine whether your particular games work. Treat compatibility as a checklist, not a marketing assumption. If your must-play titles pass that checklist and you also need a high-end professional laptop, the Surface Laptop Ultra is a plausible choice. If broad game compatibility and predictable gaming value come first, verify every essential title—or choose a gaming-focused platform with fewer Arm-specific variables.
