Yes. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X can run demanding Windows PC games, including recent, graphically intensive releases. However, “runs” does not guarantee 60 frames per second, high or ultra settings, or native 1080p rendering. The most demanding games often need a lower preset, reduced render resolution, an upscaler such as FSR2, or a higher power mode.
Its Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme integrated graphics are fast for a handheld, but they remain integrated graphics. Treat each game as a separate tuning exercise and judge results by frame-rate consistency and image quality, not by the 120Hz capability of the screen alone.

What the ROG Xbox Ally X is designed to run
The ROG Xbox Ally X (model RC73XA) is a Windows 11 handheld gaming PC built around AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. ASUS equips it with a 7-inch, 1920×1080 touchscreen, a 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium and an 80Wh battery. Its Xbox-oriented full-screen interface is a front end for Windows, not a separate console operating system. ASUS says the Xbox button opens Game Bar and related controls while the device still provides access to a Windows game catalogue.

The display can refresh at up to 120Hz, but the graphics hardware may render a demanding game at a much lower rate. A 120Hz panel can make the interface and lighter games feel smooth; it does not make a new open-world title render at 120 frames per second.

Because this is Windows, the available catalogue is broader than a single console store. TechRadar specifically lists Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG support. A game still has to work with its Windows launcher, controller input, anti-cheat system and current PC requirements.
Performance results in context
The following figures come from different test suites and should not be combined into an average. Each result belongs to the stated resolution, preset, power mode and upscaling configuration.
| Game or comparison | Test conditions | Reported result | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hogwarts Legacy | 1080p, default in-game graphics, plugged in, Turbo mode | 46 fps on Xbox Ally X; 37 fps on the previous ROG Ally X | ASUS comparison; manufacturer result |

| Indiana Jones and the Great Circle | 1080p, default graphics, plugged in, Turbo mode | 42 fps versus 34 fps on the previous model | ASUS comparison; manufacturer result |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1920×1080 Ultra, FSR off | 28 fps | Notebookcheck review benchmark |
| Baldur’s Gate 3 | 1920×1080 Ultra | 32.5 fps | Notebookcheck review benchmark |
| Strange Brigade | 1920×1080 Ultra | 58.8 fps | Notebookcheck review benchmark |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1080p Low, FSR off, 35W Turbo | 49.5 fps | Notebookcheck power-mode and preset test |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1080p Medium, FSR off, 35W Turbo | 40.5 fps | Notebookcheck power-mode and preset test |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 1080p High, FSR off, 35W Turbo | 31.9 fps | Notebookcheck power-mode and preset test |
| Alan Wake 2 | 720p output, 640×360 performance render resolution, FSR2 | 32–53 fps in an open-world scene; 60-fps cap in a subway area | Tom’s Hardware review; image was described as very blurry |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | Medium, DX12, plugged in | 64 fps at 720p; 45 fps at 1080p | Tom’s Hardware review |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | Medium, DX12, unplugged | 79 fps at 720p; 52 fps at 1080p | Tom’s Hardware review; battery operation and scene affect the result |
Notebookcheck’s standard suite measured an overall 14% advantage over the previous Ally X in its test set. That aggregate is useful for judging the generation change, but a single title can differ substantially from it because engines, patches and graphics settings vary.

60 fps is possible, not automatic
The results show a wide range. A well-optimized or less demanding game can approach 60 fps at 1080p, while an intensive title at ultra settings can fall into the high 20s or 30s. Reducing a preset can recover a meaningful amount of performance, but the visual trade-off depends on the game’s lighting, shadows, reflections and crowd settings.
“Runs” and “runs well” are different tests
Tom’s Hardware’s Alan Wake 2 result is the clearest example. The game launched and produced playable frame rates, but only after outputting 720p and rendering internally at 640×360 with FSR2. The reviewer found the picture very blurry. That is technical compatibility, not evidence of a sharp, console-like presentation at 1080p.

Plugged-in and battery results are not interchangeable
Higher power limits can raise frame rates, but they increase heat, fan noise and energy use. ASUS’s comparison uses a plugged-in Turbo configuration, whereas Tom’s Hardware also measured an unplugged mode. Quote or compare a result only when its power condition is known.
How to tune a demanding game
Use this sequence when a new title is slow or unstable. Change one group of settings at a time so you can identify what helped.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the game’s current PC requirements. Confirm the required Windows version, graphics API, storage space, launcher and controller support. Requirements can change after patches.
- Start at 1080p with a medium preset. Use the game’s built-in benchmark when available, then play a representative area rather than judging only the menu or opening cutscene.
- Set a realistic frame-rate target. A stable 30 or 40 fps can feel better than a fluctuating 60. Use an in-game cap or the handheld’s display controls when frame pacing is uneven.
- Lower the expensive options first. Shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, global illumination, crowd density and ray tracing usually cost more than texture quality. Keep textures higher if video memory allows and the image benefits from them.
- Try an upscaler. FSR2 or another supported temporal upscaler can raise performance by rendering below the output resolution. Compare fine text, foliage and motion for ghosting or blur before keeping the setting.
- Use a higher power mode when connected to AC. ASUS’s Turbo mode is the configuration used for its published comparison. On battery, select a mode that balances performance, temperature and runtime instead of assuming the plugged-in result will carry over.
- Test AMD software features cautiously. Windows Central recommends enabling AMD HYPR-RX and associated game features for demanding titles. Treat them as optional tuning tools: benefits vary by game, and frame generation does not equal the same image quality or latency as native rendered frames.
- Re-test after changing drivers or patches. Graphics drivers, firmware and game updates can alter shader compilation, frame pacing and compatibility.
Compatibility: what Windows support does and does not promise
The Xbox full-screen experience makes the handheld feel console-like, but games still run as Windows PC applications. A title listed for Xbox consoles is not automatically identical to its PC edition, and a game that launches on another handheld is not guaranteed to behave the same way here.
For each game, verify four areas:
- Launcher: Check whether the required store client starts correctly and remains signed in. Some launchers add another layer before the game opens.
- Controller input: Confirm that the game recognizes the built-in controls and that its menus are navigable without a mouse and keyboard.
- Anti-cheat: Multiplayer anti-cheat components can impose operating-system, driver or background-service requirements. Check the game publisher’s current notes.
- Performance requirements: Compare the game’s recommended specifications with the Ally X’s integrated graphics, then look for benchmarks that disclose resolution, preset, power mode and upscaling.
The available evidence does not establish universal title-by-title compatibility. A current game-specific check is more reliable than a blanket claim that every PC release works.
Image quality, resolution and the 120Hz screen
Native 1080p is the panel’s sharpest common target, but it is not always the best performance target. Rendering internally at a lower resolution and upscaling can maintain a steadier frame rate. The cost is visible softness, shimmer or ghosting, especially in games with fine foliage, hair or thin geometry.

Use the highest internal resolution that maintains your chosen frame-rate target. If 1080p medium is unstable, compare 900p or 720p output, or a lower internal scale at 1080p output. Do not judge a setting only from a still screenshot; camera movement reveals temporal artifacts.
Battery and operating-mode trade-offs
The 80Wh battery is large for a handheld, but capacity alone does not provide a fixed runtime. Workload, brightness, frame-rate cap, wireless radios, temperature and power mode all matter. A demanding AAA game can draw far more power than an indie title, and a high-refresh display can consume more energy when the system is driving high frame rates.
ASUS’s published comparison distinguishes Turbo operation and plugged-in testing, while independent reviews measure their own configurations. No single dependable runtime figure should be applied to every demanding game. For longer sessions, lower the frame-rate cap, reduce brightness, use a balanced power mode and enable an upscaler rather than expecting the 80Wh figure to guarantee a particular number of hours.

The game starts but performs poorly
Confirm the active power mode, then lower the preset and output resolution before disabling features at random. Close unnecessary background applications and allow shader compilation to finish. Compare frame pacing in the same scene after each change.
The image is too blurry
Raise the upscaler quality mode or internal render scale first. If the game still looks soft, reduce expensive effects while restoring resolution. Alan Wake 2 demonstrates that an extremely low internal resolution can make a technically playable result unattractive.

The game will not launch
Check Windows updates, GPU drivers, the launcher’s sign-in state and the game’s anti-cheat requirements. Verify that the title supports the required graphics API and controller mode. A launch failure is a compatibility issue, not something a lower graphics preset can fix.
Performance changes between plugged-in and unplugged play
That is expected when the system applies a lower battery power limit. Compare only tests made under the same power condition, and choose a battery profile that does not cause repeated clock or temperature swings.
Who should buy it for demanding games?
The Ally X is a strong fit if you want a Windows handheld that can run modern PC releases and you are comfortable tuning settings. It is especially attractive for players who accept medium settings, dynamic resolution or upscaling in exchange for portability, and for those who want access to several PC storefronts.
It is a poorer fit if your requirement is native 1080p ultra at a locked 60 fps in every new AAA game, or if you do not want to adjust power, resolution and graphics presets. A handheld integrated GPU cannot deliver the same headroom as a dedicated desktop or gaming-laptop graphics processor.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore buying for one specific title, find a benchmark for that exact game and confirm its current launcher, controller and anti-cheat behavior. Look for the test resolution, preset, upscaler, frame-rate cap and plugged-in status; without those details, an FPS number is difficult to apply to your own setup.
