The ROG Xbox Ally X and MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ are Windows 11 gaming PCs in handheld form. Either can be your only computer for portable gaming, game streaming and occasional Windows work, but neither fully replaces a gaming laptop for sustained high-wattage AAA play, a large built-in screen, a full keyboard, extensive ports or easy upgrades.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is the more balanced choice: it combines a large 80Wh battery with Xbox-focused software and a lower price position. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the performance choice, offering materially stronger graphics and an 8-inch 120Hz display, but its $1,799 review price makes the laptop alternative harder to dismiss.

What these handhelds can replace—and what they cannot
Both devices run ordinary Windows games rather than a limited console operating system. You can install PC storefronts, use cloud gaming, connect peripherals and perform light desktop tasks. Their controls, displays and batteries are integrated, so they are genuinely portable in a way a laptop-and-controller setup is not.
The compromise is power and ergonomics. A gaming laptop can sustain higher wattage for longer, cool a faster processor and graphics chip more effectively, and provide a larger display, full keyboard, touchpad and more built-in connectors. A handheld can deliver excellent play on a couch, train or hotel room, but demanding games often require reduced settings, upscaling or frame generation. Long plugged-in sessions also expose the limitations of a small chassis and handheld controls.

ROG Xbox Ally X: the balanced portable PC
Core hardware and software
ASUS lists the ROG Xbox Ally X (RC73XA) with an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, Windows 11 and an 80Wh battery. Its Xbox full-screen experience is designed to make a Windows handheld feel more like a console: your games and launcher controls are easier to reach without navigating the desktop first. ASUS also says the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme includes an NPU for future AI experiences.
ASUS reports up to 9.9 hours of light gaming and 2.7 hours of heavy AAA gaming. Those figures are not general battery promises: the company tested at 75% brightness with wireless enabled and online play. Light gaming used 1080p Low in Silent mode; heavy gaming used Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Low. Expect the heavy-gaming figure to be the more relevant planning number for modern releases, and remember that higher power modes, brightness, downloads and background applications reduce endurance.
Where it fits best
- Players who value Xbox-oriented navigation and a familiar controller-first interface.
- Owners who want an 80Wh battery without paying the MSI model’s premium.
- People whose main use is portable play, streaming and occasional Windows tasks rather than all-day desktop productivity.
- Buyers comfortable using 1080p output and performance settings chosen for a handheld’s power envelope.
MSI Claw 8 EX AI+: the faster, larger-screen option
Core hardware and software
MSI’s Claw 8 EX AI+ (CG3EM) uses Intel Arc G3 Extreme graphics and Windows 11 Home. Its 8-inch display runs at 1920×1200 with a 120Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate and a typical brightness of 500 nits. The taller-than-1080p resolution gives games and desktop applications more vertical space, while VRR helps smooth frame-rate fluctuations that are common on handheld hardware.
The Claw has an 80Wh battery, Hall-effect controls and two Thunderbolt 4 ports. Hall-effect sticks and triggers use magnetic sensing rather than conventional contact-based components, which can reduce the type of drift associated with worn potentiometers, although no control system is immune to damage. MSI also provides an Xbox Mode interface for a controller-first launch experience.
Upscaling is part of the performance story
MSI recommends game-specific settings and Intel XeSS upscaling to raise frame rates. Tom’s Guide reported XeSS 3 support for about 50 games at the time of its review. That support is useful, but it is not universal: games without a suitable upscaler or frame-generation implementation may need lower native resolution or detail settings instead.
How much faster is the MSI?
Independent testing shows a meaningful graphics lead for the Claw, but the size of that lead depends on the game and power profile. PC Gamer found a 20–40% gaming-performance uplift over the ROG Xbox Ally X20 in its tested games, while noting that the MSI cost just under 40% more in the United States. “Ally X20” is the model name used in that test; the comparison is the ROG Xbox Ally X platform described above.
| Benchmark | MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ | ROG Xbox Ally X |
|---|---|---|
| 3DMark Fire Strike | 12,358 | 9,141 |
| 3DMark Time Spy | 6,534 | 4,033 |
| 3DMark Port Royal | 3,544 | 1,999 |
Tom’s Guide recorded those 3DMark results in its comparison. TechRadar reported the same Claw results and an Ally X Port Royal score of 2,006, a small difference that can result from test configuration. Synthetic scores indicate the Claw’s stronger graphics capability; they do not guarantee the same percentage increase in every game.

Game results show why settings matter
In PC Gamer’s Cyberpunk 2077 testing at 1080p Medium, the ROG Xbox Ally X averaged 42 frames per second. The MSI averaged 35 FPS in its endurance mode, then reached 51 FPS in its v1.0 performance configuration. That spread illustrates the trade-off: the MSI can be faster, but its quiet or battery-oriented modes can erase the advantage.
PC Gamer considered Cyberpunk 2077 borderline around 40 FPS without upscaling. Black Myth: Wukong needs upscaling or frame generation for a comfortable result on this class of handheld. A gaming laptop with a higher-power GPU remains the easier route if your target is consistently high settings and high refresh rates in demanding AAA games.
CPU and productivity performance
The Claw’s graphics lead does not automatically make it the faster desktop computer. TechRadar found the ROG Xbox Ally X slightly ahead in Geekbench CPU scores and described the CPU results as close. MSI claims up to 42% faster average performance than Ryzen Z2 Extreme, but that is MSI’s claim rather than a universal application result. For browsing, documents and launcher work, both are capable Windows PCs; neither substitutes for a laptop keyboard and touchpad during long writing or spreadsheet sessions.
Display, controls and portability trade-offs
The MSI’s 8-inch 1920×1200, 120Hz VRR panel is a clear specification advantage when you want a larger handheld image or smoother motion. Its 500-nit typical brightness is useful in bright rooms, though outdoor visibility still depends on reflections and the game scene. The Ally X’s official specification information supplied here establishes its processor, operating system, battery and Xbox experience, but not a directly comparable screen size, resolution or brightness figure; do not assume the two panels are equivalent from the names alone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Both products put controls on either side of the screen, which is excellent for short and medium sessions but less flexible than a laptop for mouse-heavy strategy games, creative applications or long typing. You can pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse or connect wired accessories, but doing so moves the experience toward a docked computer rather than a self-contained handheld.
Battery life: capacity is equal, evidence is not
Each device has an 80Wh battery. That equal capacity does not mean equal runtime: processor efficiency, screen settings, refresh rate, game engine and power mode all matter. ASUS provides the Ally X figures—up to 9.9 hours in its light-gaming test and 2.7 hours in its heavy Cyberpunk 2077 test—under the stated 75%-brightness, wireless-enabled conditions.
MSI’s official page does not provide a directly comparable independent battery-runtime figure for the Claw 8 EX AI+. You therefore should not declare a battery winner from capacity alone. For either handheld, a USB-C charger or power bank that meets the device’s charging requirements is important for travel, and a high-performance mode will consume energy faster than the manufacturer’s light-use scenario.

Can either one replace a laptop at a desk?
It can, but the replacement requires accessories. A practical desk setup usually includes a USB-C or Thunderbolt dock, external monitor, keyboard, mouse and charger. That stack provides the screen size, ports and input comfort a laptop includes in one chassis. It also adds cost, cables and another item to carry, reducing part of the handheld’s price and portability advantage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose a handheld as your only computer when
- Your priority is playing PC and Xbox-library games in different rooms or while travelling.
- You already own, or are willing to buy, a dock and monitor for desk sessions.
- Light productivity means web, email, documents and launcher management rather than sustained editing or data work.
- You accept tuning demanding games with a 30–60 FPS target, upscaling or frame generation.
- You prefer a built-in controller and can tolerate typing on an accessory keyboard when necessary.
Choose a gaming laptop instead when
- You need a large integrated display, full keyboard and touchpad every day.
- You expect sustained high-wattage performance in AAA games while plugged in.
- You want several built-in ports without a dock.
- You plan extensive multitasking, content creation or mouse-and-keyboard games.
- You want broad upgrade options and a conventional internal layout. Storage expansion should be checked separately because microSD and internal-SSD support varies by exact handheld model and configuration.
Price and value: calculate the complete system
Tom’s Guide reviewed the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ at $1,799 and called it the best PC gaming handheld the reviewer had used, while also saying the price was difficult to justify without a sale. PC Gamer placed it at just under 40% more than the ROG Xbox Ally X in the United States and still found the MSI 20–40% faster in its game testing. Those figures describe the reviewed US pricing relationship, not a permanent worldwide price; retailer discounts and regional taxes change the calculation.
The relevant comparison is not only the handheld sticker price. Add the dock, monitor, keyboard, mouse, charger and any storage accessory needed for your setup. If those components are already on your desk, a handheld can be a cost-effective second form factor. If you must buy everything, a similarly priced laptop may deliver a simpler all-in-one workstation, even if its gaming performance per dollar differs.
Which should you buy?
Buy the ROG Xbox Ally X if balance matters most
Select the Ally X when Xbox-style usability, the 80Wh battery and a lower purchase position matter more than maximum graphics throughput. It is the sensible choice for portable gaming with occasional desktop work, especially if you are comfortable with 1080p Low-to-Medium settings and want to keep money available for a dock or monitor.
Buy the MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ if performance and screen size matter most
Select the Claw when you will use its 8-inch 120Hz VRR display, dual Thunderbolt 4 connectivity and stronger Arc graphics regularly enough to justify the premium. Its best results require selecting the appropriate performance profile and, in some games, XeSS or frame generation. The higher price is hardest to justify if your games are light, your playtime is mostly away from power, or you will spend most of the time docked.
Practical setup checklist
- Set a frame-rate target. Decide whether 30, 40 or 60 FPS is acceptable before changing graphics settings; this prevents wasting battery and power on a target the handheld cannot sustain.
- Start with the manufacturer’s or game’s recommended profile. Then adjust resolution, texture quality and effects one at a time so you can identify what improves smoothness.
- Use upscaling where the game supports it. XeSS or another supported upscaler can improve performance, while frame generation may help perceived fluidity but cannot replace adequate base frame rate.
- Test unplugged and plugged-in modes separately. The MSI’s endurance and v1.0 performance results demonstrate how dramatically a power profile can change output.
- Plan the desk connection. Confirm the dock’s video, USB and charging capabilities, then connect the monitor, keyboard and mouse before treating the handheld as your main desktop.
- Check storage before purchase. Verify the exact model’s internal SSD and microSD provisions and leave room for large AAA installations.
Verdict
Neither handheld is a universal gaming-laptop replacement. Both can be the only gaming computer for a portable-first owner, and both can become a competent docked Windows PC. The ROG Xbox Ally X offers the better balance of battery capacity, Xbox-oriented usability and cost. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ is the faster option, with a larger 120Hz VRR screen and substantially stronger graphics benchmarks, but its $1,799 reviewed price makes the premium worthwhile mainly for buyers who will use that performance and display every day.
