Short answer: A PS5 cannot play original PS1 or PS3 game discs. A PS5 model with a built-in disc drive can play supported PS4 game discs, while the original PS5 Digital Edition cannot read any game disc. For physical PS4 games, the disc-drive model is the relevant choice: you install the game and updates, then leave the disc inserted whenever you launch it.
Backward compatibility depends on three separate things: the generation and format of the disc, whether your PS5 has compatible disc hardware, and whether that particular game is supported without missing features or errors.

PS5 disc compatibility at a glance
| Disc generation | PS5 disc support | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| PS1 | No | The original console, a supported re-release, or another platform |
| PS3 | No | The original PS3, a supported re-release, or another platform |
| PS4 | Yes, for supported titles | A PS5 model with a disc drive; the disc must remain inserted |
The table describes physical discs, not digital purchases. A game that you own digitally can follow a different availability path, but inserting an older-generation disc into a PS5 does not convert it into a digital license.
Can a PS5 play PS1 discs?
No. An original PlayStation game disc cannot be played directly in a PS5. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide states that “PlayStation format software, PlayStation 2 format software, and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That includes the first PlayStation generation.

The limitation is about the disc format and software support, not merely the age of a particular PS1 title. Even if a game is well known or technically simple compared with a modern PS5 game, its original disc is not a supported PS5 input. The disc drive does not provide a general-purpose way to emulate every earlier PlayStation console.
What to use instead for PS1 games
- Use the original PlayStation console and its discs.
- Use a supported re-release when the publisher has made that title available in a newer format.
- Use another platform that officially supports that release.
Those options concern a separate release or device. They do not make the original PS1 disc readable by the PS5.
Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. PS3 game discs are not supported on PS5. PlayStation Support explicitly says, “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs.” Inserting a PS3 disc therefore will not install a playable PS5 version.
As with PS1 software, the restriction applies to the physical disc itself. A PS3 title may have a separate re-release or another officially supported version, but that is different from using the PS3 disc in the PS5 drive. Keep the original PS3 console if your collection depends on those discs, or look for a supported release on a platform that offers it.
Can a PS5 play PS4 discs?
Yes, a PS5 with a disc drive can play supported PS4 game discs. Sony describes the PS5 as backward compatible with “the overwhelming majority of PlayStation 4 games.” Sony’s launch-era figure was “more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4,” a statement made by Hideaki Nishino, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, on October 9, 2020.
That percentage is a launch-era coverage statement, not a guarantee that every PS4 title or every feature behaves identically today. Sony also warns that some PS4 functions may be unavailable on PS5 and that some games may show errors or unexpected behavior. Check the individual game’s support status when a title is important to your collection.
How a PS4 disc works on a disc-drive PS5
The disc is used to verify ownership and start the installation process. The PS5 installs the game data to its storage and may ask you to download an update. The disc is still required for authorization each time you play, so installing the game does not let you put the disc away permanently.

Step-by-step: install and play a PS4 disc
- Turn on a PS5 model that has a disc drive.
- Insert the PS4 game disc with the label oriented as indicated by the console’s drive.
- Select the game tile or game hub that appears on the PS5 home screen.
- Allow the console to install the game. If an update is offered, let the update download and install before playing.
- When installation is complete, start the game from the home screen.
- Keep the same PS4 disc inserted for every play session. Removing it after installation will prevent the PS5 from validating the game when you launch it again.
The exact installation time and update size depend on the game and your connection. The important distinction is that the disc-drive PS5 can read a supported PS4 disc; the PS5 Digital Edition cannot.
Does the PS5 Digital Edition have a disc drive?
The original PS5 Digital Edition has no built-in disc drive and cannot use PS4, PS3, PS1, or other game discs. A physical PS4 library therefore requires a PS5 model with disc hardware unless your specific newer Digital Edition belongs to a model group that supports Sony’s optional drive.
Sony documents an optional CFI-ZDD1-series disc drive for specified CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. This is model-specific: the existence of the accessory does not mean that every Digital Edition can accept it. Check the exact CFI model identifier for your console and the drive’s compatibility documentation before buying. Do not assume that an older Digital Edition can be upgraded simply because a newer model has a detachable-drive design.
Choosing hardware for a physical PS4 library
- You own many PS4 discs: Choose a PS5 configuration with a disc drive, or confirm that your exact eligible newer model supports the CFI-ZDD1-series drive.
- You buy only digital games: A Digital Edition can fit that library, but it cannot read discs later unless its model is officially compatible with the add-on drive.
- You own PS1 or PS3 discs: A PS5 disc drive will not solve the problem; those original discs remain unsupported.
What “backward compatible” means on PS5
Backward compatibility is not one universal promise covering every PlayStation generation. For physical media, the PS5’s supported path is primarily PS4 discs on hardware that includes a disc drive. PS1 and PS3 discs remain outside that path.

Even within PS4 support, compatibility can be title-specific. Sony’s “more than 99 percent” statement covers the PS4 catalog as a launch-era aggregate; it does not say that every game has identical performance, features, menus, peripherals, or online behavior on PS5. Sony’s warning about unavailable functions, errors, and unexpected behavior is the practical qualification to remember.
Three checks to make before relying on a PS4 disc
- Format: Confirm that the disc is a PS4 release, not a PS3 or PS1 disc with a similar name or artwork.
- Hardware: Confirm that your PS5 has a usable disc drive, either built in or officially supported as an add-on for the relevant CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 group.
- Software: Check the game’s compatibility information and install any offered update. A supported game can still have a missing function or an unexpected error.
Do you have to keep the PS4 disc in the PS5?
Yes. After the PS5 installs a supported PS4 game, leave that game’s disc inserted whenever you play. The installation copies game data to the console, but the physical disc remains the ownership check. If you remove it, the game may remain installed yet fail to start until the disc is inserted again.
This requirement also means that two different discs are not interchangeable, even if they are from the same series. Insert the disc for the specific game you intend to launch.

Common situations and the correct answer
“My PS1 disc fits in the PS5 drive. Why does nothing happen?”
Physical fit does not establish software compatibility. PS1 discs are not a supported PS5 format, so the console cannot turn that disc into a playable PS5 game. Use the original console, a supported re-release, or another officially compatible platform.

No. Updates cannot add PS3-disc support to a PS5. A PS3 disc is still an unsupported physical format. You would need a separate supported release or the original PS3 hardware.
“The PS4 game installed, but it will not launch after I removed the disc.”
Reinsert the same PS4 disc. The disc is required for each play session, even after installation and updates are complete.
“My PS4 game starts but has an error or missing feature.”
Sony cautions that some PS4 functions may be unavailable and that some games may show errors or unexpected behavior on PS5. Install any available update, then consult the game-specific support information. Do not treat the broad catalog percentage as a promise that every title behaves identically.
“I have a Digital Edition. Can I add a drive?”
First identify the exact CFI model. Sony documents the CFI-ZDD1-series drive only for specified CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. If your console is outside those groups, the accessory is not an established upgrade path; use a disc-drive PS5 for physical games instead.
Which PS5 should a physical-game owner buy?
If your priority is playing a collection of PS4 discs, the simplest decision is a PS5 with a disc drive. It directly supports supported PS4 discs and preserves the required insert-the-disc ownership check. A Digital Edition is suitable only when your library is digital or when you have verified that your particular newer model accepts the officially documented add-on drive.
If your collection is mainly PS1 or PS3 discs, neither PS5 configuration provides disc playback for those generations. Buying the disc-drive version solely for PS1 or PS3 compatibility would not address that need. Retain the corresponding original console or obtain a separate, supported re-release.
The bottom line on PS5 backward compatibility
PS5 backward compatibility is strongest for PS4 software, not for every earlier PlayStation disc. Original PS1 and PS3 discs cannot be played on any PS5. Supported PS4 discs work on PS5 hardware with a disc drive, require installation and updates when prompted, and must stay inserted whenever you play. The original Digital Edition has no disc support, while the CFI-ZDD1-series accessory applies only to specified CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Finally, Sony’s more-than-99-percent figure is a launch-era catalog estimate, and individual games can still lose functions or exhibit errors.
