Short answer: The documented Ocarina of Time boss-room wrong warp does not have an established, automatic save-corruption effect. It changes where the game loads Link at runtime. A boss-room game over normally sends Link to that dungeon’s entrance. Save corruption is a separate failure in the stored SRAM data, and the available technical documentation does not demonstrate that ordinary use of the exploit creates that failure.
Three different problems are often called “the boss glitch”
Reports about this exploit frequently combine three mechanics that should be kept separate:

A surprising destination, a missing item, a rejected file and an erased file are therefore not interchangeable symptoms. Identifying which one occurred is the first step toward a useful diagnosis.

What happens when you lose a boss fight
CloudModding’s scene documentation describes a specific rule for a game over in a boss-room or fight scene: the next spawn is set to the dungeon’s main entrance. This is a location-selection rule, not a rewrite of the save record.

Documented examples
- Gohma’s room returns Link to the Deku Tree entrance.
- King Dodongo’s room returns Link to Dodongo’s Cavern entrance.
- Other boss scenes similarly point to their associated dungeon entrance.
Seeing an entrance after dying in a boss room is consequently expected behavior. It does not, by itself, show that the cartridge has lost progress or that SRAM has been overwritten. The game can load a defined entrance while leaving the stored file untouched.
How the Gohma wrong warp works at a high level
The documented setup uses Gohma’s boss room as a place where several loading events can be manipulated. The guide describes defeating Gohma in a particular position, then combining the blue warp with a bottle and precise timing. The resulting state confuses the location-loading logic and sends child Link to Ganon’s Castle, bypassing most of the normal route.
That destination error happens while the game is deciding which scene and entrance to load. It is a runtime effect: the active game state is pointed at an unintended location. The wrong-warp guide does not claim that the technique inherently writes malformed bytes to the save file, and it supplies no evidence that a successful warp automatically damages SRAM.
Why the destination can look alarming
Ganon’s Castle is far outside the expected path for a child-Link run, so the result can appear to be a broken file. In technical terms, however, an impossible or unexpected room is evidence of a bad runtime destination, not proof that the persistent save record has failed validation. Resetting or loading again can produce a different result from the active glitch state without proving that the file itself was corrupted.
What the game stores in SRAM
Ocarina of Time’s documented SRAM unit is 0x8000 bytes. The game writes a primary save record and then a secondary backup, and it attempts to load the primary first. The save context includes a checksum as well as consistency checks on required fields.

Why a valid checksum is not enough
A checksum can agree with the bytes that are present while the values themselves still contradict one another. The documented checks therefore include field relationships and required-value checks. If those checks fail, the game can treat the record as corrupt even when a simple checksum calculation would pass.
This distinction matters when interpreting a glitch report. A file-rejection message or an apparently reset file points toward stored-data validation. A character appearing in an unexpected room points toward runtime loading. The two systems interact when a game is saved, but they are not the same operation.

Because the game keeps a primary record and a backup, a load failure does not automatically tell you which copy is unusable or whether both copies were changed. Repeatedly saving after an unusual state can replace information that might otherwise help recovery. Preserve the cartridge or emulator state first, rather than cycling through more writes.
Does a normal boss-room wrong warp corrupt the file?
There is no documented causal chain showing that it does. The available technical material establishes these narrower points:
- A boss-room game over has a defined dungeon-entrance destination.
- The Gohma setup can produce a wrong runtime destination, including Ganon’s Castle.
- Save corruption requires invalid or inconsistent stored data according to the SRAM validation rules.
- The wrong-warp documentation does not report automatic SRAM corruption as an inherent result of the exploit.
That is different from claiming that corruption is impossible under every circumstance. Hardware faults, unsafe cartridge handling, an emulator issue, a damaged memory component or an unrelated glitch could affect stored data. The evidence simply does not justify saying that performing the ordinary boss-room wrong warp will corrupt every save, or even that it has a demonstrated automatic corruption rate.

Cartridge manipulation is a separate risk
A Nintendo 64 reference discussing cartridge tilting reports unusual glitches and warns players not to save afterward because weapons may be lost. That warning concerns physically disturbing the cartridge while the console is powered. It should not be generalized into “all boss-room glitches corrupt saves.”

Why moving a powered cartridge is different
Tilting, removing or reseating a cartridge can interrupt communication between the console and the game hardware while code is running or while a write is in progress. That is a hardware-level hazard, not the intended runtime behavior of the Gohma wrong warp. If a report includes cartridge movement, its results should be analyzed separately from a clean software-only exploit attempt.
Before attempting the exploit
Use a conservative procedure, especially if the file contains progress you cannot replace:
- Identify the release. Record whether you are using an original Nintendo 64 cartridge, a later compilation, Virtual Console or the 3DS version. Memory layout, timing and save implementation can differ between releases.
- Make a platform-appropriate backup. Use the backup feature available to your hardware or emulator before experimenting. Keep the original state unchanged.
- Start from a clean boot. Note whether the symptom appears after a normal restart, rather than only inside an already-glitched session.
- Keep the hardware stationary. Do not tilt, remove or reseat a powered cartridge.
- Do not save an induced glitch state. If you deliberately trigger a hardware-level disturbance or obtain an obviously unstable state, stop before writing the file.
These steps reduce the chance that an experiment will overwrite the only useful copy of a file or mix a hardware fault with a software exploit.
How to classify what you see

The comparison should include platform and revision, whether the cartridge was physically moved, whether you died, reset or saved, the exact symptom, and whether it reproduced after a clean boot. Those details are more informative than calling every unexpected result “corruption.”

What to do if a file suddenly appears invalid
1. Stop repeated writes
Do not keep saving, deleting files or repeatedly resetting in the hope that the next attempt will repair the record. Additional writes can replace a primary or backup state that might still contain usable data.
2. Preserve the current state
On hardware that supports a dump or backup, capture the cartridge data before experimenting further. On an emulator, preserve the original save file and any relevant state file as separate copies. Do not edit the only copy.
3. Write down the sequence
Record the release, console or emulator, whether a game over or reset occurred, whether a save command was issued, and whether the cartridge was moved. Also note whether the symptom is a wrong room, missing inventory, file rejection or apparent erasure.
4. Test only a copy
If you have a verified backup, any recovery experiment should use the copy. Keep the original untouched so that a failed attempt does not destroy the remaining evidence.

Recovery depends on the platform, the condition of the SRAM and which fields failed validation, so a claim that a particular wrong-warp sequence can always be repaired would go beyond the evidence.

Can you save after the Gohma wrong warp?
The available wrong-warp guide does not establish that saving after the exploit is automatically safe or automatically destructive. The prudent distinction is between a software-only runtime wrong warp and a state created by physically disturbing the cartridge. The Nintendo 64 cartridge-tilting warning specifically says not to save afterward because weapons may be lost; that advice should be followed whenever hardware manipulation occurred.
If you are experimenting with the ordinary software setup, keep a backup and avoid saving until you have confirmed which release and state you are using. A successful arrival at an unintended scene is not proof that the save record is damaged, but it is also not a reason to risk the only copy of an important file.
Why internet reports seem to conflict
Two players can describe “the same glitch” while reporting different mechanisms. One may have died and respawned at a dungeon entrance; another may have executed the Gohma sequence and loaded Ganon’s Castle; a third may have tilted a cartridge and then saved. Their symptoms cannot be compared without the details that separate those cases.

A result observed on one edition should not automatically be presented as a rule for all versions.
The practical verdict
A boss-room game over is documented to respawn Link at the dungeon entrance. The Gohma boss-room wrong warp is documented to manipulate runtime loading and can send child Link to Ganon’s Castle. Ocarina of Time’s SRAM uses primary and backup records with checksum and field-consistency validation. None of those facts demonstrates that the ordinary wrong warp automatically corrupts the save.
Protect the file with a backup, keep powered cartridges stationary, do not save after a deliberate hardware-level glitch, and stop writing if a file suddenly appears invalid. Treat the destination error, a missing inventory item and a rejected save as different diagnostic cases rather than as interchangeable proof of corruption.
