Yes, but only for the right player. Nintendo Switch 2 can replace a PS5 if you mainly want Nintendo games and the freedom to play handheld, tabletop, or on a television. It is not a universal PS5 substitute: the two systems have different libraries, different controller and living-room priorities, and no official game-by-game testing establishes equivalent performance.
Choose by the games you will actually play, where you will play them, and whether you are carrying an existing Switch or PS4 library forward. Shared 4K or 120-fps labels do not prove that the consoles render games at the same quality.

The short answer: which console should replace the other?
For a Nintendo-focused player, Switch 2 is the more practical single console. It combines Nintendo exclusives with handheld and tabletop play, then moves to the television through its dock. Nintendo’s own example is Mario Kart World, which it describes as available only on Switch 2. The system also runs compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, although compatibility is not universal.

For someone whose priority is the PS5 catalogue, high-end television play, or access to a large PS4 collection, a PS5 remains the better fit. Sony lists support for the PS5 catalogue and more than 8,500 PS4 games on PS5 consoles. That figure is Sony’s current statement and can change as its compatibility information changes.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
The responsible verdict is conditional:
- Pick Switch 2 when Nintendo exclusives, portable play, or one console for handheld and television use matter most.
- Pick PS5 when your target games are on PlayStation, you want a dedicated home console, or you depend on PS4 backward compatibility.
- Keep both when your must-play lists are split between Nintendo and PlayStation. Neither system replaces the other’s exclusive catalogue.
Nintendo released Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. That date is historical release information, not evidence of current regional availability or price.
What Switch 2 delivers
Three play modes in one system
Switch 2 is designed for handheld, tabletop, and TV play. In handheld mode, the console’s built-in screen is a 7.9-inch LCD with a 1920×1080 resolution. Tabletop mode lets the console’s screen serve as the display while controllers are used separately. In TV mode, the console connects through its dock.
This flexibility is the feature that most clearly separates Switch 2 from a conventional home console. You can continue a game away from the television, use a table as a shared screen, or dock it when a larger display is available. If you mostly play in one room, that advantage may be less important than the PS5’s home-console features.

Nintendo’s launch specification lists a maximum TV output of 3840×2160 at 60 frames per second. It also lists support for 120 frames per second at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440. These are output capabilities of the system, not a guarantee that every game renders at those resolutions or frame rates.
Nintendo says TV-mode 4K, HDR, and variable refresh rate (VRR) require both a supported game and a compatible display. Its current features information says TV-mode VRR support was added in a system update on September 10, 2026. A television can therefore be technically capable while a particular game still operates at a different resolution, frame rate, or feature set.
Storage and expansion
Nintendo’s launch specification lists 256 GB of system storage. Download-heavy libraries can consume that space quickly, so expansion is an important ownership consideration. Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards. Older microSD cards that do not support the Express standard cannot be used for Switch 2 storage; buying a card solely because it worked in an older Switch is not a safe assumption.
What PS5 does best
A dedicated home-console experience
PS5 is built around television play and a fixed home-console setup. Sony highlights 4K-ready gaming, an Ultra-High Speed SSD, VRR with compatible displays, and support for up to 120 frames per second in compatible games and on compatible screens. Those statements describe the platform’s capabilities; actual resolution and frame rate depend on the game’s modes and the display chain.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe PS5’s DualSense controller adds haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in supported titles. These effects can make driving resistance, weapon tension, impacts, or environmental surfaces feel different through the controller. They are game-dependent rather than a universal feature of every PS5 title.
PS4 and PS5 libraries
Sony says PS5 consoles support more than 8,500 PS4 games. That makes PS5 a strong replacement for a PS4 when your existing collection is central to the decision. Check an individual game before buying, because a platform-wide compatibility statement does not guarantee that every title, edition, peripheral, or feature behaves identically.
Sony offers disc and digital PS5 variants. If you own physical games or plan to buy used discs, verify which console model you are considering and whether the specific game is available in the format you need. A digital-only model cannot read a physical disc without an appropriate drive.
Game libraries matter more than shared output numbers
Start with named games, not brands
Write down the five to ten games you are most likely to play during the next year. For each one, record the exact platform and edition. A title may have a different version on Switch 2, may require a paid upgrade, or may not be available on the system at all.

Nintendo specifically promotes Switch 2 exclusives such as Mario Kart World. It also says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Switch games. Sony’s PS5 catalogue and its stated PS4 support cover a different set of releases. The correct purchase follows the games on your list, not a general belief that one console is more powerful.
Third-party games require a title-by-title check
Do not infer equivalence from a game’s presence on both platforms. Developers can use different resolution targets, graphics settings, loading systems, modes, or control features on each console. The official information available for these systems does not provide a comparable, independent, game-by-game performance benchmark.

Compatibility with games you already own
Moving from an original Switch
Nintendo says many Nintendo Switch games are compatible with Switch 2, but also warns that some may not be supported or fully compatible. Some games receive free updates, while others have paid upgrades. Treat compatibility as a title-by-title check rather than a blanket guarantee.

For a current Switch owner, make a list of the games you would be unhappy to lose. Check each one in Nintendo’s current support information, including its required accessories and whether its save-transfer process is supported. A game that launches may still have limitations in a mode, peripheral, or online feature.
Moving from PS4
PS5 is the more direct path for a PS4 owner because Sony states that more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles. Confirm the particular game and edition, especially if you rely on a disc, a specific downloadable expansion, or an older accessory.
Do not compare the two numbers as if they were equivalent test results. Nintendo’s statement concerns compatibility for Switch games with exceptions and upgrade paths; Sony’s figure is its stated count of playable PS4 games. They describe different libraries and support policies.
Performance and display: how to read the specifications
4K output is not the same as 4K rendering
Switch 2 can output up to 3840×2160 at 60 fps in TV mode according to Nintendo’s launch specification. That does not mean every game internally renders at native 4K, nor that every scene reaches 60 fps. The same distinction applies to PS5’s 4K-ready and high-frame-rate descriptions.
When a game listing mentions a performance mode, resolution mode, HDR, or VRR, read the game-specific details. A console, dock, cable, receiver, television, and game all need to support the intended path. If any component lacks the required capability, the console falls back to another mode.
120 fps has conditions on both consoles
Nintendo lists 120-fps output at 1920×1080 or 2560×1440 for Switch 2. Sony describes up to 120 fps for compatible PS5 games and displays. Neither statement promises that all games run at 120 fps, and neither is a direct comparison of rendering performance.
To use a high-refresh mode, verify the display’s supported input resolution and refresh rate, enable the appropriate console and television settings, and select the game’s performance option when one exists. If the game does not offer that mode, changing a system setting cannot create it.
HDR and VRR need compatible equipment
Nintendo requires a supported game and compatible display for TV-mode HDR and VRR, and says TV-mode VRR support arrived in the September 10, 2026 system update. Sony also describes VRR as requiring a compatible display. Check the television’s input specifications rather than relying on a generic “120 Hz” label; ports can differ in resolution, HDR, and variable-refresh support.
Portability versus living-room immersion
Choose Switch 2 for changing locations
Switch 2 is the logical choice if you regularly move between a sofa, a bedroom, travel, or a shared room. Its handheld and tabletop modes are not accessories added to a home console; they are core ways Nintendo designed the system to be used. The 7.9-inch 1920×1080 LCD gives you a self-contained screen when the television is unavailable.
Portability does involve trade-offs. You are using a smaller screen, and a game’s handheld mode can use different visual or performance settings from its docked mode. The console’s storage expansion also requires microSD Express, not an older card standard.
Choose PS5 for a fixed, high-end display setup
PS5 suits a player who expects to play primarily on a television and values the DualSense controller, fast SSD-based loading, high-frame-rate modes in supported games, and the PlayStation catalogue. Its design does not provide the built-in handheld and tabletop modes that define Switch 2.

Storage, discs, and buying the right format
Switch 2 downloads and cards
The 256 GB storage figure is Nintendo’s launch specification. Actual free space available to games is lower after system software and reserved data. If you plan a mostly digital library, budget for a microSD Express card and verify that the card is explicitly compatible with Switch 2. Do not assume a standard microSD card from an older Switch will work.
PS5 digital and disc choices
PS5 is offered in disc and digital variants. Select the disc-capable model if you need to play an existing physical collection or want the option of buying disc editions. Select a digital model only after confirming that your library and future purchases can remain digital. The model decision is separate from game performance; it is primarily about media format and ownership habits.

The table separates confirmed platform capabilities from assumptions. It does not show that one console is faster in every game, because the official material does not provide a controlled head-to-head benchmark.
Use this decision process before buying
- List your must-play games. Include exclusives, third-party releases, expansions, and the exact editions you want.
- Verify each platform. Check the publisher or console support page for a Switch 2, Switch compatibility, PS5, or PS4 version. Record upgrade fees and feature limitations.
- Choose your normal play location. If handheld or tabletop use is essential, Switch 2 has the relevant built-in modes. If television play is nearly exclusive, compare the game libraries and home-console features instead.
- Audit your existing library. Switch owners should check Nintendo’s compatibility and upgrade information title by title. PS4 owners should verify their particular games against Sony’s PS5 compatibility information.
- Check the display chain. For 4K, HDR, VRR, or 120-fps goals, confirm the television input, cable, receiver, and game mode. Treat the console’s maximum output as a ceiling, not a promise.
- Decide on physical media. Switch 2 downloads require microSD Express expansion when internal storage is insufficient. On PS5, choose a disc or digital model based on how you buy and use games.
- Only then check regional price and availability. Prices, bundles, stock, and model names change by country and date, so a launch figure is not a current buying recommendation.
Common mistakes that lead to the wrong console
Assuming shared 4K labels mean equal performance
Output resolution is a connection and display capability. It does not reveal a game’s internal rendering resolution, image reconstruction, frame-time consistency, or graphics settings. Compare the specific game versions instead.
Buying from a compatibility headline alone
“Compatible” can still mean a required update, a paid upgrade, a missing feature, or an unsupported accessory. Open the current support listing for the exact title before treating an old purchase as covered.

A player who never leaves the television may gain little from Switch 2’s portable design, while a player who frequently plays away from a television may find that feature more valuable than a higher home-console specification.
Forgetting storage format requirements
A standard microSD card that worked in an earlier Nintendo system is not automatically usable in Switch 2. The required expansion standard is microSD Express.
Choosing a PS5 model without considering discs
Physical PS4 or PS5 collections require a disc-capable setup. Confirm the exact model before buying, because a digital-only console changes how you access disc-based games.
Recommendations for common player profiles
The Nintendo-first player
Choose Switch 2 if your priority list is led by Nintendo exclusives and you want the same system in your hands, on a tabletop, and on a television. Confirm compatibility for older Switch games and plan for microSD Express storage if your library is mostly digital.
The PlayStation-first player
Choose PS5 if your must-play list is primarily PlayStation or if access to a large PS4 collection is the deciding factor. Select the disc or digital variant according to your existing library and buying habits, then verify the individual games you care about.
The mixed-library player
If your essential games are divided between Nintendo and PlayStation, one console cannot provide both exclusive catalogues. Buy the platform that covers the larger or more important part of your list first, and treat the other system as necessary rather than expecting output specifications to erase the library difference.
The display enthusiast
Compare the games and display equipment together. Switch 2’s listed 4K, HDR, and VRR features are conditional on supported games and compatible displays; PS5’s 4K-ready, VRR, and 120-fps descriptions carry similar game and display conditions. Without a compatible television input and a game mode that uses the feature, the label has no practical effect.
What the evidence does—and does not—prove
The official specifications establish Switch 2’s play modes, screen resolution, listed TV outputs, storage specification, microSD Express requirement, and compatibility caveats. Sony’s product information establishes PS5’s home-console features, DualSense capabilities in supported games, high-frame-rate and VRR conditions, disc and digital model choices, and its stated PS4 compatibility figure.
