Yes, but an unmodified Nikon D850 is not an infrared-converted camera. Its internal filter blocks infrared wavelengths, so a filter placed on the lens can be used for experiments but does not make routine IR shooting easy. For regular infrared photography, the practical option is an internal conversion, which changes the camera’s focus behavior and may limit ordinary visible-light use.
Does the Nikon D850 have an infrared mode or filter?
Nikon’s D850 documentation reviewed here does not establish a dedicated infrared mode. Nikon explains that standard digital cameras have an internal physical filter that blocks IR from reaching the sensor. The D850 is therefore not an IR-converted camera as sold; the presence of an internal blocking filter is different from having a selectable IR mode.

Nikon’s infrared primer places visible light at approximately 380–750 nm and infrared just above 750 nm. These are general wavelength boundaries, not a D850-specific measurement of how much IR the camera transmits.
Can you use an external IR filter on an unmodified D850?
Yes. A filter such as the Hoya R72 720 nm infrared filter can be placed in front of the lens as an experiment. Nikon names the R72 as a popular starting point. It does not remove or bypass the D850’s internal IR-blocking filter, however, so only a limited amount of infrared reaches the sensor and exposure can take a long time.

Nikon gives 30–90 seconds as an example of exposures that may be needed for an unconverted system on a bright sunny day. That is Nikon’s illustrative example, not a guaranteed D850 exposure: results depend on the camera, filter, light, lens, and scene. Long exposures make moving subjects difficult to capture sharply.
The D850 manual documents long time exposures in manual mode, and Nikon lists standard ISO sensitivity from ISO 64 to 25,600, with expanded settings available. Those specifications do not establish the D850’s IR sensitivity or predict exposure through an external IR filter.

When does D850 conversion make more sense?
For routine IR photography, internal conversion is generally the more practical route. A conversion provider removes the camera’s internal blocking filter and replaces it with a filter selected for a particular wavelength response. Nikon’s primer describes conversion options, but it does not guarantee identical results across D850 bodies, conversion filters, lenses, or processing methods.

How do conversion wavelengths affect the image?
The conversion filter’s cutoff shapes which wavelengths reach the sensor and influences the image character. In Nikon’s general description, an 830 nm conversion favors stronger monochrome infrared, while a lower cutoff such as 720 nm allows a mix that can support false color. These are broad descriptions, not a promise of a specific D850 look; the sensor, lens, filter, and processing all matter.

Before choosing a conversion, ask the service provider what filter type and cutoff it uses, how the camera will be calibrated, how focus will behave, and whether the modification is reversible. An IR-only conversion can make the body unsuitable for ordinary visible-light work unless an appropriate alternative workflow is available.

- Choose an external filter if you want to experiment without modifying the body and are comfortable with potentially long exposures and static scenes.
- Consider conversion if you intend to shoot infrared regularly and want a setup designed for that use. Decide first whether you prefer a more monochrome-oriented response or one that can support false color.
- Keep the D850 unmodified if ordinary visible-light photography is a priority and you do not want the focus and usability changes associated with conversion.
Nikon’s D850 documentation reviewed here does not establish a firmware-based IR function. The D850 Download Center lists firmware C 1.31, released April 25, 2024, but the reviewed release information does not establish an infrared-specific feature.
