The Legion Go S can deliver a 1080p-class picture in demanding games when it renders internally at roughly 720p to 900p and uses an upscaler such as FSR, or when frame generation is enabled. The Ryzen Z2 Go Windows configuration has limited headroom for current AAA releases; the Ryzen Z1 Extreme configuration running SteamOS is materially faster in the published tests cited below.
What “1080p gaming” means on the Legion Go S
The Legion Go S has a native 1920×1200, 120Hz, 8-inch display. A game can therefore send a 1080p or 1200p output signal to the screen while rendering internally at a lower resolution. AMD FSR reconstructs that lower-resolution image, and some games can add frame generation to create additional displayed frames.

That distinction matters on a handheld. Native 1920×1080 or 1920×1200 rendering at a high preset asks the graphics processor to shade substantially more pixels than a 720p or 800p internal image. In demanding games, the lower internal resolution is often the difference between an unplayable result and a stable 30-to-60-frame experience.
Lenovo lists the Legion Go S with either an AMD Ryzen Z2 Go or Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor, up to 32GB of LPDDR5X memory and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen4 storage. Lenovo’s CES 2025 specification lists a 55.5Wh battery and an approximate weight of 730g. The Z2 Go is specified as a four-core, eight-thread chip with a 3.0GHz base clock and up to 4.3GHz maximum frequency.

What the published tests show
The clearest answer comes from measured game results. TechRadar’s review recorded the following figures:
| Game and setting | Resolution or output | Average result |
|---|---|---|
| Cyberpunk 2077, Ultra | 1200p | 3fps |
| Cyberpunk 2077, Ultra | 720p | 6fps |
| Black Myth: Wukong, Medium | 1200p | 19fps |
| Black Myth: Wukong, Medium | 720p | 39fps |
| Doom: The Dark Ages, handheld preset with FSR Balanced | 1080p output | 37fps |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Highest | 720p | 32fps |
| Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Highest | 1200p | 21fps |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Highest | 720p | 30fps |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Highest | 1200p | 16fps |
These results demonstrate why a simple “yes” or “no” is misleading. Doom: The Dark Ages reached 37fps at a 1080p output with FSR Balanced and a handheld-oriented preset, while Cyberpunk 2077 remained at single-digit frame rates even after dropping to 720p with its Ultra preset. The game, preset and reconstruction mode matter as much as the headline resolution.

| Configuration | Test setting | Reported result |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen Z1 Extreme with SteamOS | 1200p Medium, no FSR | About 25fps |
| Ryzen Z1 Extreme with SteamOS | 1200p Medium with FSR | About 35fps |
| Ryzen Z1 Extreme with SteamOS | 800p with FSR | About 56–61fps |
| Ryzen Z2 Go with Windows | 1200p Medium | About 15fps |
| Ryzen Z2 Go with Windows | 1200p Medium with frame generation | About 27fps |
The comparison is not a laboratory head-to-head across every variable, but it establishes the practical direction: the Z1 Extreme model has considerably more performance margin in this demanding title. The Z2 Go can still produce a 1080p-class output, but it more often needs a lower internal resolution, a balanced or performance upscaling mode, and carefully chosen quality settings.
Recommended settings for the Ryzen Z2 Go
Use the following as a starting point rather than a universal preset. Exact results change with game patches, graphics drivers, power mode and the scene being rendered.
1. Start at 1280×720 or 1600×900 internally
720p is the safest first step for a demanding AAA game on the Z2 Go. If performance is comfortably above your target, try 900p. The display can still receive a 1080p-class output after upscaling, but the lower render resolution reduces the graphics workload.
2. Enable FSR in the game
Choose FSR Balanced when image quality remains acceptable and you need a clear performance gain. If the frame rate is still below target, move to FSR Performance or reduce the internal resolution further. On an eight-inch screen, the visual compromise from an upscaler is often less distracting than it would be on a large desktop monitor.

3. Use a medium or handheld preset, then adjust costly options
Begin with the game’s Medium or handheld preset. Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, crowd density and foliage before cutting texture quality. Texture settings consume memory, while the other options commonly impose heavier frame-time costs. Ray tracing should remain disabled in the most demanding games unless a particular title proves otherwise.
4. Treat frame generation as a supplement
Frame generation can increase the displayed frame count, as the Z2 Go result in Doom: The Dark Ages rose from about 15fps to about 27fps at 1200p Medium. It does not make the underlying game simulation respond like a native 27fps feed, however. If the base frame rate is very low, controls can still feel sluggish and generated frames may show artifacts. Use it after achieving a reasonable base rate, not as a substitute for lowering an overloaded preset.
5. Set a realistic target
For the Z2 Go, a locked 30fps is a sensible target in many demanding games. Less intensive scenes may support 40 or 60fps after upscaling, while a native 1200p Ultra target is not dependable. Use the display’s 120Hz capability when the game can sustain higher frame rates; it does not make a slow render faster.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen the Z1 Extreme model is worth choosing
Choose the Z1 Extreme configuration if demanding AAA games are a primary reason to buy the handheld and you want more room for 900p-to-1200p output, higher presets or steadier frame pacing. In the cited Doom test, it reached about 35fps at 1200p with FSR and 56–61fps at 800p with FSR, compared with about 15fps for the Windows Z2 Go at 1200p Medium.

The Z1 Extreme’s advantage does not guarantee native ultra-quality 1080p in every new release. It is better understood as additional headroom: the same game may hold a higher internal resolution, a sharper FSR mode or a higher frame-rate cap before settings must be reduced.
The Windows Z2 Go remains a viable choice when compatibility with Windows game stores, mods or launchers is more important than maximum performance, or when you are comfortable targeting 720p–900p internal rendering. Its four-core, eight-thread design and the measured results indicate that it is the configuration most likely to require compromises in CPU-heavy or graphically intensive scenes.
Windows versus SteamOS: practical differences
| Factor | Ryzen Z2 Go Windows model | Ryzen Z1 Extreme SteamOS model |
|---|---|---|
| Processor option | Ryzen Z2 Go; Lenovo lists 4 cores, 8 threads, 3.0GHz base and up to 4.3GHz | Ryzen Z1 Extreme |
| Observed demanding-game result | Doom: The Dark Ages about 15fps at 1200p Medium; about 27fps with frame generation | Doom: The Dark Ages about 25fps at 1200p Medium without FSR, about 35fps with FSR |
| Practical internal resolution | Often 720p–900p in current AAA games | More scope for 800p–1200p, depending on the title |
| Upscaling approach | FSR is important for a 1080p-class output | FSR also improves performance; 800p with FSR reached about 56–61fps in the cited Doom test |
| Frame generation | Raised the cited Doom result from about 15fps to about 27fps | The cited figures report FSR results rather than a frame-generation measurement |
| Best use case | Portable Windows compatibility with a 30fps-oriented target | Higher performance headroom for demanding games under SteamOS |
Operating-system overhead, driver revisions and game compatibility can influence the gap, so these figures should not be treated as a fixed multiplier for every title. The tests are evidence of the configurations’ relative capability, not a promise of identical results on every unit.

Game-by-game expectations
Cyberpunk 2077
Do not plan on Ultra settings at 1080p or 1200p. The cited test recorded 3fps at Ultra 1200p and only 6fps at Ultra 720p. A playable setup would require a substantially lower quality preset, aggressive upscaling and, where available, disabling expensive effects. The Ultra figures are a warning about preset cost, not a limit on what the game can do after tuning.

Black Myth: Wukong
Medium at 1200p averaged 19fps, while Medium at 720p reached 39fps in the cited review. That makes 720p internal rendering with FSR a practical starting point for a 30fps-class experience. Native 1200p Medium is unlikely to feel consistently smooth on the Z2 Go.
Doom: The Dark Ages
This is the strongest example for 1080p output. TechRadar recorded 37fps at 1080p with the handheld preset and FSR Balanced. Tom’s Guide’s configuration split shows why the exact model matters: the Z1 Extreme SteamOS version had more headroom, while the Z2 Go Windows version needed frame generation even to approach the high-20s at 1200p Medium.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Both titles show a large resolution penalty at the Highest preset. Assassin’s Creed Mirage fell from 32fps at 720p to 21fps at 1200p. Shadow of the Tomb Raider fell from 30fps at 720p to 16fps at 1200p. These results support using 720p or 900p internal rendering when maintaining a stable frame rate matters more than native sharpness.
Plugged-in and battery use
Performance can vary between battery and wall power because the handheld’s power mode determines how much electrical power the APU can sustain. The cited results do not establish a universal battery-versus-plugged-in frame-rate difference, so do not assume that a benchmark recorded on external power will be reproduced while traveling. For the most demanding games, test your chosen settings in the exact power mode you intend to use and cap the frame rate if consistency is more important than peak output.
The 55.5Wh battery and approximately 730g chassis are useful context for portability, but neither specification predicts play time in a particular game. A graphically intensive title at a high power limit will consume battery faster than a lightweight game at a lower limit.
Troubleshooting poor 1080p-class performance
- Frame rate below 30fps: lower the internal resolution to 720p, switch FSR from Quality or Balanced to Performance, and reduce shadows and volumetric effects.
- Uneven frame pacing: cap the frame rate to a value the game can sustain rather than allowing large swings toward the display’s 120Hz ceiling.
- Blurry image: move up one FSR quality mode or raise the internal resolution after confirming that the frame rate has headroom.
- Input feels delayed with frame generation: improve the base frame rate first and disable frame generation if the extra displayed frames do not improve responsiveness.
- Results differ from a review: check the game version, graphics driver, operating system, power profile and whether the comparison used the Z2 Go or Z1 Extreme model.
Bottom line
The Legion Go S can run demanding PC games with a 1080p-class output, but the dependable method is to render internally at 720p–900p, use FSR and select a medium or handheld preset. Native 1080p or 1200p at Ultra is not a realistic general target for the Ryzen Z2 Go, as shown by single-digit Cyberpunk 2077 results and sub-30fps figures in several other games. If you want more room for higher resolution or steadier frame rates, the Ryzen Z1 Extreme SteamOS configuration is the stronger choice.
