Can the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 Run Game Pass, Steam and Epic Games Store Games?

Yes. The 2026 ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 (model RC74XA) is a Windows 11 Home PC handheld, not a locked console. You can install and play compatible PC Game Pass titles locally, download Steam games, and use the Epic Games Store launcher. You can also stream supported Game Pass games from the cloud, but cloud access, catalog size and local installation rights depend on your subscription, region, device and the individual game.

The important distinction is between a Windows PC game and a console-only Xbox title. The X20 can run games with a Windows version that fits its hardware and control support; its Xbox interface does not make every Xbox console game installable.

Why the X20 can use several game stores

ASUS describes the ROG Xbox Ally X20 as being “Built on Windows 11” and bringing “XBOX and every major PC storefront into a single, seamless library.” Windows 11 Home provides the same desktop operating-system foundation used by gaming laptops. That means the X20 can install normal Windows launchers and PC applications rather than being limited to one console marketplace.

The Xbox full-screen experience is an aggregation layer. It can show games from Xbox and PC storefronts in one place, but each store still controls its own account, downloads, updates, copy protection and launcher requirements. Signing in to Xbox does not automatically sign you in to Steam or Epic, and an installed game may still open its original launcher.

Hardware context

The X20’s specifications determine how demanding a particular game can be, but they do not guarantee a specific frame rate. ASUS lists the following core hardware for the 2026 model:

Component ROG Xbox Ally X20 specification What it means for game selection
Processor AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 8 cores/16 threads, up to 5.0 GHz Designed for Windows PC games; each title still has its own CPU and GPU requirements.
Memory 24GB LPDDR5X Provides substantial headroom for a handheld, but does not replace a game’s graphics requirement.
Storage 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD Local installs use this capacity; large modern games can consume a significant portion of it.
Screen 7.4-inch, 1080p, 120Hz OLED Can display up to 120Hz, while actual game performance depends on settings and workload.
Battery 80Wh Enables portable play, but runtime varies with brightness, frame rate, power mode and game load.
Expansion and connectivity USB4, USB-C and a microSD Express reader Useful for accessories and additional storage; external storage performance depends on the drive and game.

These are the baseline capabilities, not a promise that every new AAA release will run at 1080p and 120 frames per second. Check the Windows system requirements for the specific game and expect to adjust resolution, quality presets, frame limits or power settings.

Xbox Game Pass: local installation and cloud streaming

Playing PC Game Pass titles without streaming

The X20 runs the Windows Xbox app, so a PC Game Pass game that offers a Windows PC build and supports the device can be downloaded to the SSD and played locally. Local play does not require a continuous internet connection after installation, although the Xbox app may need to verify a license and the game will still require periodic updates or online services when applicable.

Look for the PC version of a title in the Xbox app or Microsoft Store. A game listed only as a console release is not automatically installable on Windows. Some games have separate PC and console editions, different system requirements or different save behavior, so select the edition identified for PC before downloading.

What cloud gaming changes

Cloud gaming sends video from Microsoft’s servers to the X20 and returns your controls over the internet. It is a separate path from installing a PC game: it can let you play a supported cloud title without using SSD space, but it depends on a Game Pass plan that includes cloud access, a supported region and device, and a reliable network connection. ASUS and Microsoft both state that catalog and cloud terms vary by plan, region, device and time.

Cloud availability is not proof that a game has a Windows download. A console title may be playable through the cloud while having no PC build for local installation. Conversely, a PC Game Pass game may install locally but not be available for cloud streaming.

Promotional Game Pass offer

The US X20 specification lists two months of Xbox Game Pass Premium. This is a promotional offer for the eligible US configuration, not a universal entitlement: ASUS says offers vary by market. Check the terms shown during device setup, including the redemption deadline, account eligibility and the plan’s current catalog and cloud benefits.

Steam on the ROG Xbox Ally X20

Steam is a Windows PC storefront, so you can install its Windows client, sign in to your Steam account and download games from your library or the Steam store. ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally FAQ answers the compatibility question directly: because the handheld runs Windows 11, it can access games that run on the Windows platform.

“Runs on Windows” remains the key qualification. A Steam game may require a graphics feature, processor level, anti-cheat component, launcher or control scheme that affects whether it works well on a handheld. Steam’s store page and the game’s developer requirements are the right places to check before buying. Community controller layouts can help with games designed for keyboard and mouse, but they do not change the underlying hardware requirements.

Installing Steam

  1. Complete Windows setup on the X20 and install Windows and ASUS system updates.
  2. Open a browser, obtain the Windows Steam installer from Steam’s official download page and run it.
  3. Sign in to the Steam account that owns the games you want to play.
  4. Choose a game, select the X20’s internal SSD or a compatible expansion drive as the install location, and allow the download to finish.
  5. Launch the game from Steam. If the Xbox full-screen interface is configured to display Steam titles, it can provide a consolidated shortcut, but Steam remains responsible for the game and its updates.

Epic Games Store on the X20

The Epic Games Store also provides a Windows launcher. Install the Epic Games Launcher, sign in, and download games from your Epic library in the same way you would on a Windows laptop. Xbox’s Windows handheld guidance explicitly includes downloading games from favorite PC storefronts, and ASUS’s FAQ names Epic alongside Steam and other PC launchers.

Epic games can have additional publisher requirements. A title may start the Epic launcher and then invoke a publisher account, separate anti-cheat service or online sign-in. Those requirements are independent of the X20’s Xbox interface. Keep the Epic launcher updated and allow its services through Windows security prompts when a game requires them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Installing Epic Games Store games

  1. Download the Windows Epic Games Launcher from Epic’s official site and install it on the X20.
  2. Sign in with the Epic account that owns the game or has claimed it.
  3. Open the Library, select a game and choose an installation folder with enough free space.
  4. Complete any first-run account, anti-cheat or publisher setup requested by the game.
  5. Start the title from Epic, then optionally add its shortcut to the Xbox full-screen library.

How to set up the X20 for all three libraries

  1. Finish Windows configuration. Connect to Wi-Fi, run Windows Update and install ASUS-provided firmware, chipset and graphics updates. Reboot when requested.
  2. Check Windows mode. ASUS notes that using Game Pass on PC requires leaving Windows S mode. If your unit is in S mode, use Windows’ built-in switch-out process before installing desktop game launchers.
  3. Install the Xbox app. Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with your Game Pass subscription. Confirm that the plan includes PC access for the games you intend to play.
  4. Install Steam and Epic separately. Use each service’s Windows installer, sign in to the correct account and choose storage locations deliberately.
  5. Prepare storage. Keep free SSD space for updates and temporary installation files, not just the final game size. Use the microSD Express reader or another compatible drive when internal capacity is insufficient, checking each game’s performance expectations.
  6. Configure controls and display. Start with the game’s controller preset, then adjust resolution, graphics quality and frame-rate limits. The 120Hz OLED can show high refresh rates, but a demanding game may need a lower cap for steadier performance and battery life.
  7. Test one title from each service. Verify that downloads, controller input, cloud saves and online sign-in work before filling the drive with a large library.

What the X20 cannot promise

Every Xbox game is not automatically a Windows game

Xbox console compatibility and Windows PC compatibility are different licenses and builds. A console-only game cannot be installed locally merely because it appears in the Xbox app. It may still be playable through supported cloud streaming, subject to the subscription and region rules.

Game Pass catalog access changes

Microsoft’s catalog changes over time and differs by plan, country and device. A title can leave the service, be offered only on console or cloud, or have a PC version with different content. Treat the listing shown in your account as the current authority rather than assuming that a past catalog entry remains available.

Launchers and anti-cheat can affect play

Games from Steam and Epic retain their own authentication, update and anti-cheat systems. A game can install successfully yet fail to launch until its companion service, account link or anti-cheat component is installed. Some competitive games also restrict unsupported environments or require a particular Windows configuration; check the developer’s current support information for that title.

Performance is game-specific

The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB of memory and 1TB SSD provide a strong handheld PC foundation, but they do not establish universal settings or frame rates. Resolution, texture quality, upscaling, background applications, power mode and thermal conditions all affect results. Start with the game’s recommended settings and change one option at a time so you can identify the cause of stutter or slowdowns.

Save synchronization and playing across devices

Xbox Play Anywhere is the clearest route for carrying progress between an Xbox console and a Windows PC. ASUS says most Xbox Play Anywhere titles should synchronize cloud saves and progress, and Xbox reported more than 1,000 Play Anywhere games in a 2025 announcement. The benefit applies to supported titles, not to every game in the Xbox catalog.

Steam Cloud and Epic’s own synchronization systems are separate from Xbox Play Anywhere. Whether a save follows you depends on the individual game’s implementation and account linkage. A game bought on Steam or Epic should not be assumed to share saves with its Xbox edition, even when the title is also sold through Microsoft’s store.

Troubleshooting common problems

  • The game appears on console but has no Install button: check whether a Windows PC edition exists. If it is console-only, use cloud gaming if your plan and region support it.
  • Game Pass will not install: verify that the subscription includes PC access, that Windows S mode has been disabled, and that the Microsoft account in the Xbox app is the account holding the subscription.
  • A Steam or Epic game downloads but will not start: open the original launcher, complete pending updates and account or anti-cheat setup, then restart Windows.
  • The game runs poorly: lower resolution or quality, cap the frame rate, close background applications and confirm that graphics and firmware updates are installed. A 120Hz screen does not require a game to render at 120 frames per second.
  • There is not enough space: remove unused installers and games, leave room for patches, or move suitable titles to a compatible microSD Express or external drive.
  • Saves are missing: confirm that you launched the same store edition and account, that cloud synchronization completed on the previous device, and that the title actually supports cross-device saves.
  • Controls are wrong: enable the game’s controller mode or profile, then check whether the title expects a gamepad, keyboard and mouse, or a custom layout.

Bottom line for each storefront

Service Can the X20 use it? Main condition
PC Game Pass Yes, for compatible Windows PC titles Requires the appropriate subscription, a PC build, supported device and available storage; catalog varies by plan, region and time.
Xbox cloud gaming Yes, where supported Streaming requires a qualifying subscription, supported device and network connection; it is not a local install.
Steam Yes Install the Windows client; each game must support Windows, the hardware and its required services.
Epic Games Store Yes Install the Windows launcher; publisher accounts, anti-cheat and other game-specific requirements still apply.

In practical terms, the ROG Xbox Ally X20 is a Windows gaming PC in a handheld form factor. That gives it broad access to PC Game Pass, Steam and Epic, while Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud gaming add Xbox-specific options. The limits are the same ones you face on any Windows PC: the correct edition, a changing catalog, game-level requirements, account rules and enough performance and storage for the title you choose.
