Can Tech Prevent Lost Luggage? What Trackers Really Do—and What Travelers Can Do

No tracker can prevent a bag from being misrouted, and none guarantees its return. A compatible tracker can give you—and, in some participating-airline workflows, baggage staff—useful location information after a problem starts. The most effective approach combines that visibility with sensible packing, itinerary choices, and prompt reporting.

How often does checked luggage go wrong?

SITA reported 33.4 million mishandled bags in 2024, or 6.3 per 1,000 passengers, despite record passenger volume. “Mishandled” includes more than bags that disappear: 74% were delayed, 8% were lost or stolen, and 18% were damaged or pilfered. Delays, not permanent losses, made up most cases. SITA’s 2025 report identifies transfers as the largest stated contributor (41%); tagging or ticketing and similar factors accounted for 17%, loading failures 16%, and operational issues such as customs, weather, or capacity constraints 10%.

What technology can—and cannot—do

Airline baggage tracking

Airlines and their airport and ground-handling partners record a bag’s custody and routing events. IATA’s Resolution 753 calls for member airlines to track baggage at four core points. This industry tracking is distinct from a passenger’s personal tracker, and useful records depend on coordination among the organizations handling the bag. See IATA’s baggage-tracking guidance.

Newer baggage systems can also use tools such as RFID, automated sorting and transfer, computer vision, and risk modelling. SITA describes these alongside tracking at check-in, loading, transfer, and arrival in its 2026 Baggage IT Insights. These operational tools improve visibility and handling processes; they do not make missed transfers impossible.

Consumer trackers

A tracker can help you see where a bag is, which may be especially useful when an airline’s status updates are incomplete. Whether that location can be shared with baggage staff—and whether they can act on it—depends on the device, your phone ecosystem, and the airline’s recovery process. Ask the carrier whether it accepts shared location information rather than assuming that every airline can use it.

One documented example is SITA’s integration of Apple Find My Share Item Location with its WorldTracer baggage tracing workflow. A traveler can create a temporary location share for an AirTag or a Find My network accessory and provide it to a participating airline; the location appears in the baggage trace record, and the passenger can stop sharing. In December 2025, SITA said 29 airlines were using the integration. SITA also reported a 90% reduction in truly lost bags and 26% shorter delayed-bag recovery time during its first year. Those are vendor-reported results for this specific integration and bags with location sharing enabled, not an independent controlled study or a result that should be expected for every traveler. Which trip choices raise the risk?

U.S. Department of Transportation guidance says the likelihood of a bag going astray rises as an itinerary becomes more complicated. The following ordering is useful when deciding whether to check a bag, although it does not predict the outcome of any particular trip:

Itinerary Relative consideration
Nonstop flight Lowest risk in the sequence described by DOT
Stop where you stay on the same aircraft More risk than nonstop
Connection involving an aircraft change More risk than a same-aircraft stop
Interline connection involving different airlines Highest risk in the sequence described by DOT

When feasible, avoid checking a bag on a tight connection or an interline itinerary. If you do check one, keep essentials and anything you cannot afford to lose access to in your carry-on.

How to prepare before checking a bag

  • Photograph the outside of the bag and its contents. Keep the bag identification tag and any claim receipt until the trip is complete.
  • Pack essential medication, valuables, and immediate necessities in your carry-on, not in checked luggage.
  • If using a tracker, check that it works with your phone and that you know how to view and share its location. Ask your airline whether it supports receiving that data as part of a baggage trace.
  • Consider the connection risks in your itinerary; choose not to check a bag when that is practical, particularly on a tight or interline connection.

What to do when your bag does not arrive

  1. Report it promptly to the airline. Use the carrier’s baggage desk or the reporting method it provides, and obtain a case reference or file reference before leaving the airport if possible.
  2. Keep the records. Save your bag tag, case reference, receipts, and any relevant tracker location information. Follow the airline’s instructions for providing updates or documentation.
  3. Keep receipts for reasonable essentials. If you need to buy necessities while waiting, retain itemized receipts and ask the airline how to submit them. Reimbursement rules and deadlines depend on the applicable itinerary and carrier process.
  4. Follow up through the airline’s claim process. Give the carrier accurate delivery details and respond to requests for proof of ownership, contents, or value. A tracker location may help staff investigate, but it does not replace the airline’s report or claim procedure.

What compensation may apply in the United States?

For travel covered by U.S. rules, airlines must compensate passengers for baggage that is lost, delayed, or damaged under applicable domestic regulations and international treaties. The U.S. DOT lists a maximum liability of $4,700 per passenger for domestic travel and 1,519 Special Drawing Rights (SDR) per passenger for most international travel covered by the Montreal Convention. The DOT page gives an approximate dollar conversion of $2,175 for 1,519 SDR; the conversion can change. These are liability limits, not automatic payments: the amount depends on the circumstances, supporting proof, depreciation, and applicable deadlines. DOT also says airlines must refund fees paid to transport a bag that is lost. Check the current U.S. DOT baggage guidance and the airline’s claim instructions. Rules may differ for trips outside this U.S.-focused guidance.
