Whether a teacher may offer extra credit for donations depends on the school district’s grading and fundraising policies, applicable state rules, and educator ethics requirements. A teacher should not make academic credit depend on a student’s ability or willingness to contribute; check local policy and get administrative approval before proposing any donation-related activity.
Why the answer depends on the school system
Rules may come from a district policy manual, state education requirements, or public-employee ethics law. The examples below apply only to the jurisdictions that issued them; they do not establish a nationwide permission or ban.

For example, Provo City School District Policy 6110, modified June 19, 2025, states: “Participation in or non-participation in group fundraising cannot impact a student’s grade.” That is a local rule, not a national standard. Provo City School District Policy 6110
Why donation-based extra credit raises a fairness concern
If students receive academic credit only after contributing money or goods, students whose families cannot or do not wish to contribute may be disadvantaged for reasons unrelated to learning. That is a fairness concern based on how the offer is structured, not a legal conclusion established for every school system.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Raffle Ticket Box with 4 x 0.4-Inch Slot】 The top slot is precision-sized for raffle tickets, voting slips, and paper notes, so entries drop in cleanly without jamming at school raffles and contests. Fold or trim oversized slips first and the line keeps moving. Check your insert sizes before the event
- 【Shatter-Resistant Acrylic, See-Through Body】 Crystal-clear acrylic walls keep every bill and ticket in plain view, so donors watch their gift drop in and land, and you can check the collection level at a glance without opening the lid. The shatter-resistant body survives busy events, stays light enough to move between tables, and wipes clean for reuse
- 【4 x 6-Inch Sign Holder for Any Event】 The built-in holder fits standard 4 x 6-inch paper or cards. Swap the insert to relabel the box as a tip jar, tip box, suggestion box, ballot box, raffle box, or a go-to among donation boxes for fundraising events and giveaways. No tools needed; display cards are not included
- 【Donation Box with Lock and 2 Keys】 The keyed lock keeps collected cash and tickets secure while you step away from the table or between pickups. Two keys are included, one for the organizer and one spare. Seat the lid fully before locking
- 【Compact 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0-Inch Countertop Size】 Measuring 6.2 x 4.6 x 4.0 inches, it fits bake sales, office front desks, concession stands, reception counters, and service stations without crowding your display space, yet holds plenty for steady collections
A safer approach is to connect extra credit to an academic task and keep donations separate from grading. If a district permits an activity related to fundraising, ask an administrator to approve an equivalent no-cost option and confirm that taking part—or declining—cannot affect a grade. Provo’s grade-neutral fundraising clause is one example of a policy safeguard. Provo City School District Policy 6110
What to check before a teacher proposes a donation activity
- Review current local rules. Search the district policy manual for grading, extra credit, fundraising, donations, student incentives, charitable solicitations, gifts, and staff ethics. Utah’s LEA fiscal rule is one example of a state framework requiring local policies addressing fundraising, student participation and incentives, donation approval, and internal controls; it does not set policy for other states. Utah State Board of Education, R277-113
- Confirm approval and solicitation limits. Ask who may authorize the activity, which students may be approached, and whether solicitation is permitted during instructional or staff contract time. Tulsa Public Schools Policy 5706 requires student charitable donation drives to be approved by the superintendent or designee and says teachers cannot be involved in approved fundraising during contract time. Those restrictions are specific to Tulsa. Tulsa Public Schools Policy 5706
- Check educator ethics rules. Determine whether accepting a donation, gift, benefit, or payment could be connected to official duties or create a conflict. The New Jersey School Ethics Act, Massachusetts ethics guidance, and Ohio Ethics Commission toolkit illustrate different jurisdiction-specific rules; none should be treated as a universal standard. New Jersey School Ethics Act, Massachusetts State Ethics Commission guidance, Ohio Ethics Commission toolkit
- Use approved donation channels. Before collecting anything, confirm who may receive funds, where they must be deposited, what records are required, and whether approval is needed. Seattle Public Schools Policy 6114 describes routing covered donations and fundraising proceeds through district accounting or a designated nonprofit and bars staff from holding unreported or undeposited public funds. New South Wales Department of Education procedures separately address donation processing, records, and acknowledgements. Seattle Public Schools Policy 6114, NSW Department of Education procedures
Questions to ask a principal or district administrator
- Does the current grading policy allow extra credit tied to fundraising or donations?
- Can participation or non-participation affect a grade, and is a no-cost alternative required?
- Who must approve the activity, and may staff solicit students during school or contract time?
- Who is authorized to receive donations, and what deposit and recordkeeping process applies?
- Do staff ethics rules restrict gifts, benefits, or compensation connected to official duties?
Written guidance is preferable before students are asked to contribute. A district may regulate grades, solicitation, staff conduct, and money handling in separate policies, so checking only the extra-credit rule may miss a relevant restriction.
