Current human research does not show that taurine supplements reliably improve memory. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found no significant overall cognitive benefit from taurine alone or taurine combined with exercise, while a 2026 review of acute trials in healthy adults found mostly null or inconsistent results. Signals seen when taurine was paired with caffeine cannot be attributed to taurine by itself.
That conclusion is about the evidence available—not proof that taurine can never affect cognition. The studies are small, short, use varied tests and populations, and do not establish whether long-term supplementation helps people with low taurine intake or status.

| Review | Participants and design | Intervention | Main findings | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cao and colleagues, 2025 | 7 randomized controlled trials, represented by 9 intervention trials; 402 participants with and without cognitive impairment | Taurine alone or with exercise; some studies added taurine to therapeutic drugs | No significant overall improvement in cognitive scores. A subgroup receiving taurine with therapeutic drugs showed a higher Mini-Mental State Examination score (weighted mean difference 3.09; 95% confidence interval 2.29–3.90). | The pooled evidence did not support taurine supplementation for cognitive enhancement. The MMSE subgroup is not proof of a general memory benefit or of taurine acting alone. |
| Moore and colleagues, 2026 | 8 randomized controlled trials; 244 healthy adults aged 18–45 | Every trial used one acute dose, typically 1–3 grams and up to approximately 50 mg per kilogram | Most outcomes showed no effect; any positive findings were small and inconsistent. Tasks included working memory, immediate recall, attention, executive function and reaction time. | Acute taurine evidence provides limited support for short-term cognitive or mood effects and does not justify recommending taurine as a reliable enhancer. |
These are not product comparisons. They are summaries of human experiments, and neither review identifies a taurine regimen that consistently improves memory.

What the 2025 meta-analysis means
The overall result was negative or inconclusive
The 2025 review searched studies through January 2025 and combined results from randomized trials involving both cognitively impaired and non-impaired participants. The 2025 review’s pooled analysis found that taurine alone or taurine used alongside exercise did not produce a statistically significant improvement. Their conclusion was that the available findings did not provide sufficient evidence to support taurine for cognitive enhancement.
“Cognitive function” is broader than memory. A pooled score may include screening tests, attention measures or other domains, so a null overall result does not test every possible memory task equally. It does, however, mean that the collection of available randomized evidence did not show a dependable advantage large enough to support a general claim.
Why the MMSE subgroup should be read narrowly
The review reported a higher Mini-Mental State Examination score in a subgroup in which taurine was added to therapeutic drugs. The weighted mean difference was 3.09 points, with a 95% confidence interval from 2.29 to 3.90. This result comes from a particular treatment context and a screening instrument; it does not demonstrate that taurine by itself improves memory in healthy adults.

Several distinctions matter:
- The subgroup involved taurine plus therapeutic drugs, not taurine as an isolated intervention.
- The MMSE is a broad cognitive screening measure rather than a dedicated test of learning and delayed recall.
- A subgroup signal can differ from the result across all participants and all interventions.
- The authors still judged the total evidence insufficient for cognitive enhancement.
It is therefore accurate to report the subgroup as a finding that warrants better testing, not as confirmation that a taurine supplement treats memory problems.
What the 2026 healthy-adult review adds
Every included trial tested a single dose
Moore and colleagues reviewed eight randomized trials in 244 healthy adults aged 18 to 45. Participants took taurine once, generally in amounts from 1 to 3 grams and up to approximately 50 mg/kg. Those quantities were the doses used in the trials; they are not a recommended consumer dose.
An acute design can detect a temporary change during a laboratory task. It cannot show that taking taurine for weeks or months improves learning, preserves memory or changes the course of cognitive decline. Because all included trials were single-dose studies, the review cannot answer whether repeated use has a cumulative benefit or risk.

Most cognitive measures did not improve
The experiments used several kinds of tasks, including working memory and immediate recall, as well as attention, executive function and reaction-time measures. Results varied by task and study. Most outcomes were null, and positive effects were small and inconsistent. That pattern is different from a reproducible memory enhancement that appears across independent tests.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe review’s abstract describes the evidence as providing “limited support for short-term benefits to cognition or mood.” Its authors call for longer and better-designed trials and do not recommend taurine as a reliable cognitive enhancer on the basis of acute results.
Why taurine-and-caffeine findings do not prove taurine works
Some experiments found more consistent performance effects when taurine was administered with caffeine. A combination study answers whether the mixture differs from a control under the conditions tested; it does not identify which ingredient caused the difference.

Caffeine may account for all, part or none of an observed change, and the combination could behave differently from either ingredient alone. To isolate taurine’s independent effect, a well-designed trial would need separate taurine-only, caffeine-only, combination and placebo groups, with enough participants to distinguish modest effects. Without that comparison, a product containing both ingredients cannot be used as evidence that taurine improves memory.
Questions the current evidence leaves open
Long-term supplementation
Neither review establishes a lasting memory benefit from regular taurine use. The healthy-adult review included only acute, one-time interventions. The 2025 meta-analysis pooled a wider range of populations but still concluded that evidence for cognitive enhancement was insufficient. There is no basis here for claiming that daily use prevents age-related memory loss or reverses cognitive impairment.

The 2026 review found no eligible human trials that deliberately depleted taurine and then measured restoration. It also did not identify trials recruiting people specifically because they ate few animal-source foods or had a measured low taurine status. Consequently, the findings cannot tell us whether a person with a nutritional deficiency would respond differently from the healthy volunteers studied.

Different kinds of memory
Working memory, immediate recall, delayed recall and everyday memory are not interchangeable outcomes. A change on a short computerized task would not automatically translate into remembering appointments or retaining information over days. Future studies should specify the memory domain, use validated tests, and measure whether any effect persists beyond the testing session.

Taurine is sold in tablet and powder formats. Records in the National Institutes of Health Dietary Supplement Label Database document product labels and ingredients; they do not demonstrate that a product improves memory. A label can tell you the amount per serving and other listed ingredients, but it cannot substitute for a randomized trial.
Be especially cautious with claims that rely on:
- A caffeine-containing “energy” formula presented as proof that taurine works independently.
- A single positive task or testimonial while other outcomes were unchanged.
- The 2025 MMSE subgroup presented as though it tested taurine alone.
- Acute trial doses presented as a long-term dosing recommendation.
- Marketing language that turns a product listing into evidence of effectiveness.
No specific regulator or standards-body statement establishing taurine as a memory treatment or setting a memory-enhancement dose was identified in these evidence summaries. Do not infer a safety limit or efficacy guarantee from the label alone.
A practical decision framework for readers
If your goal is ordinary memory support
- Define the outcome. Decide whether you mean concentration during a single task, working memory, delayed recall or an everyday problem. The existing trials do not show a consistent benefit across these outcomes.
- Check the ingredient list. Separate taurine-only evidence from formulas that also contain caffeine or other active ingredients.
- Match the claim to the study. A one-time laboratory result cannot establish a long-term memory improvement.
- Look for an appropriate control. The most informative design compares taurine with placebo and, for combination products, includes the other ingredient alone.
- Consider personal medical context. If you take medicines, are pregnant, have a medical condition or are considering a supplement for diagnosed cognitive symptoms, ask a clinician or pharmacist to review the specific product before use. The reviews summarized here do not establish an individualized safety plan.
If you are worried about new or worsening memory problems
A supplement experiment should not replace an evaluation of persistent memory changes. New symptoms can have many causes, and the trials above were not designed to diagnose or treat an individual’s condition. Record when the problem occurs, what substances or medicines you use and whether sleep, mood or illness changes coincide; take that information to a qualified health professional.
What stronger future evidence would look like
A convincing answer would require larger randomized trials with longer follow-up and clearly defined memory outcomes. Useful features would include:
- Separate taurine-only, placebo and—when relevant—caffeine-only and combination groups.
- Pre-specified tests for learning, delayed recall and functional memory rather than a single broad screening score.
- Repeated dosing periods long enough to test sustained effects, with follow-up after treatment ends.
- Participants characterized by age, cognitive status, diet and measured taurine status.
- Transparent reporting of all cognitive outcomes, not only the task that produced a positive result.
Until such studies are available, the best-supported interpretation is that taurine has not been shown to reliably improve memory in humans. Acute studies leave open the possibility of small, context-dependent effects, but they do not establish a dependable supplement benefit.
