Depression-related biology is also linked to neurogenesis in animal models, but the causal chain is unsettled. Human studies suggest that some new neurons may arise in the adult hippocampus, yet no method can currently measure that process directly and reliably in a living person. Therefore, it is not established that everyday stress, a run of poor sleep, or depression directly lowers an individual’s rate of new-neuron formation.
What “forming new neurons” means
Adult neurogenesis is the production of neurons from neural stem and progenitor cells after development. The evidence discussed here concerns the adult hippocampus, particularly a region called the dentate gyrus. Newly generated cells must survive, mature, and connect with existing circuits; counting early dividing cells is not the same as proving that fully functional neurons have been added.

This process is one part of brain plasticity. Learning-related circuit changes, altered connections between existing neurons, and changes in neurotransmitters are also forms of plasticity, but they are not evidence of new-neuron formation. Keeping those outcomes separate prevents a common mistake: treating any change in memory or mood as a direct readout of neurogenesis.
How stress may influence hippocampal neurogenesis
What chronic-stress experiments show in animals
The hippocampus responds to stress hormones, and chronic stress has repeatedly been associated with reduced cell proliferation and impaired adult hippocampal neurogenesis in animal research. The effect is not a single switch that turns neurogenesis off. Researchers see changes in different stages, including how many precursor cells divide, how many newborn cells survive, and how they mature.

Results depend on the stressor, its intensity and duration, when it occurs, and the age and biological state of the animals. A laboratory paradigm involving repeated restraint, social stress, or another controlled exposure cannot be translated into a universal “stress threshold” for people. A 2022 synthesis in npj Science of Learning emphasizes that the properties and timing of developing neurons matter, not just the final cell count. The review is available from Nature.
Why this does not prove that human stress reduces new neurons
Animal findings provide a plausible mechanism but do not establish what happens in a living human hippocampus during a stressful job, caregiving period, or anxiety episode. Human-evidence reviews describe stress as a negative regulator in foundational work while also noting major methodological obstacles in measuring adult neurogenesis in people. A 2021 review of human evidence does not provide a validated way to infer an individual’s neurogenesis from stress symptoms, cortisol readings, or a brain scan.
Stress can affect sleep, attention, immune signaling, and mood through many pathways that do not require a change in the number of adult-born neurons. Consequently, “chronic stress stops your brain making neurons” is stronger than the human evidence supports.

Animal evidence for disrupted sleep
Sleep appears to modulate adult hippocampal neurogenesis in rodents. Experiments involving extended wakefulness or fragmented sleep have reported suppression of hippocampal cell proliferation and, in some studies, reductions in later neurogenesis. A 2015 review describes particularly strong evidence after sleep disruption lasting more than 24 hours, while stressing that the biological mechanisms are not fully resolved. Those experiments often combine prolonged wakefulness with handling, environmental changes, or physiological stress. They therefore cannot be reduced to a simple claim that one ordinary late night destroys neurons. The 2017 review Modulation of Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis by Sleep: Impact on Mental Health presents altered neurogenesis as one possible route by which sleep could influence mental health, not as a demonstrated human pathway. What human sleep-deprivation studies actually measure
Studies in people who are sleep deprived document changes in attention, working memory, emotional regulation, and hippocampus-dependent learning. The human literature also reports altered activity and connectivity in brain networks involved in these functions. A comprehensive review in Nature Reviews Neuroscience summarizes those findings. Its evidence concerns the sleep-deprived human brain.
These cognitive and imaging results do not directly measure the birth, survival, or integration of new hippocampal neurons. No validated human cutoff—such as a particular number of short nights—has been shown to produce a known percentage decrease in neurogenesis. Sleep loss is important to address because of its established effects on health and performance, not because a consumer can calculate a neurogenesis deficit from a sleep score.
How depression fits into the picture
Association is not a simple cause-and-effect chain
Depression-related theories have connected chronic stress, hippocampal changes, adult neurogenesis, and antidepressant action. In animal studies, chronic stress can impair neurogenesis, while some antidepressant exposures are associated with increased production or survival of newborn cells. These observations encouraged the idea that reduced neurogenesis might cause depressive symptoms and that restoring it might reverse them.

Controlled manipulations have produced a more complicated result. The 2022 review by Katherine L. Jones, Mei Zhou, and Dhanisha J. Jhaveri examined rodent models in which researchers added or removed adult-born neurons. Its conclusion was that “the relationship between adult-born hippocampal neurons and stress-related mood disorders is not linear, and that simple subtraction or addition of these neurons alone is not sufficient to lead to anxiety/depression or have antidepressant-like effects.” That statement summarizes the rodent-focused causal evidence; it is not a clinical rule for patients.
Why antidepressants should not be called neurogenesis treatments
An antidepressant can improve symptoms through several biological and psychological pathways. The reviewed animal findings do not show that a medication’s clinical benefit in people is mediated by increasing adult hippocampal neurogenesis. It is therefore inaccurate to promise that an antidepressant, psychotherapy, supplement, or lifestyle program will “restore” a person’s new-neuron production. Treatment decisions should be based on established clinical guidance and an individual’s needs, not on an unmeasured neurogenesis target.
What is known about neurogenesis in adult humans?
Birth-dating and postmortem evidence
Researchers have used carbon-isotope birth-dating, postmortem tissue, and markers associated with immature neurons to investigate whether adult human hippocampi contain newly generated cells. Some studies report evidence consistent with ongoing neurogenesis. Other studies have detected few or no immature-neuron markers in adult samples.

The limit that matters most for readers
Adult human hippocampal neurogenesis cannot currently be measured directly and reliably in the living brain. There is no routine blood test, MRI scan, cognitive app, electroencephalogram, wearable, or home assessment that reports an individual’s neurogenesis rate. The existence, extent, and functional importance of adult neurogenesis in humans remain debated, even though several lines of evidence support the possibility that it occurs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to judge a claim about stress, sleep, or depression
When a study or product makes a neurogenesis claim, check five features before accepting its conclusion:
| Question | Why it changes the interpretation |
|---|---|
| Which species? | Human observations and controlled animal experiments answer different questions. Rodent causality does not automatically generalize to human depression. |
| What exposure? | Acute stress, chronic stress, total sleep deprivation, and fragmented sleep are distinct conditions. The duration and method of induction must be stated. |
| What outcome? | Cell proliferation, survival, maturation, integration, and behavior are separate endpoints. A change in one is not proof of changes in all the others. |
| What method? | Birth-dating, postmortem markers, and behavioral tests have different limitations. A mood questionnaire cannot directly count newborn neurons. |
| Is it causal? | An association or plausible mechanism is weaker than a controlled manipulation, and even a rodent manipulation may not represent a human clinical mechanism. |
Can a scan or symptom tell you that neurogenesis is low?
No. Symptoms such as forgetfulness, low mood, poor concentration, or fatigue have many possible causes. They can follow sleep deprivation, depression, medication effects, medical illness, stress, or ordinary variation. None is a specific marker of reduced adult hippocampal neurogenesis.
Recommended Free Tools
Brain imaging can show activity, volume, blood flow, or connectivity, but those measurements are not a direct count of newborn neurons. Likewise, a sleep tracker estimates movement and physiological signals; it does not identify cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus. Claims that a device or online test measures your “neurogenesis level” go beyond the established evidence.

What you can do in practice
Address sleep, stress, and depression for their proven effects
Regular, sufficient sleep, treatment for depression, and practical stress management are worthwhile because they improve safety, mood, cognition, and overall health. The neurogenesis literature does not establish a specific sleep gadget, supplement, exercise dose, meditation product, or other consumer intervention as a way to increase adult human neurogenesis.
- For persistent insomnia, loud snoring, breathing pauses, or severe daytime sleepiness, seek a medical evaluation rather than trying to infer a neuron problem from a tracker.
- For depression symptoms, suicidal thoughts, or major loss of function, contact a qualified clinician or urgent crisis service. Do not delay care while pursuing an unproven “brain-cell growth” remedy.
- Use stress-reduction practices that are acceptable and sustainable for you, but judge them by sleep, functioning, and well-being outcomes—not by a promised neurogenesis number.
Interpret “brain growth” language carefully
Popular articles often use “new brain cells” to describe any improvement in learning or mood. Ask whether the underlying study measured adult-born neurons, changes in existing synapses, or behavior in animals. If the source does not identify the species, exposure, endpoint, and method, its claim is too vague to support a conclusion about human neurogenesis.
Bottom line
Stress and prolonged sleep disruption can interfere with adult hippocampal neurogenesis in animal models, and depression-related biology is intertwined with the same research. Human studies support the possibility of adult hippocampal neurogenesis but cannot yet measure it directly and reliably in living people. The responsible conclusion is neither that stress, sleep loss, or depression definitely stop new neurons in humans nor that they are harmless: their effects on mood, cognition, and health are well worth addressing, while the size and clinical meaning of any human neurogenesis change remain unknown.
