Sometimes—but usually as short-term coping, not treatment. Reviews find that some commercial games can lower self-reported stress or state anxiety after brief play, while evidence for lasting effects or treating an anxiety disorder is limited. Purpose-built “serious games” using techniques such as computerized CBT or biofeedback show promise, but the evidence is low quality or inconclusive. A game is best viewed as an optional complement to established care, chosen for how it affects you rather than marketed as a cure.
What the research can—and cannot—say
“Stress relief” and “anxiety treatment” are different outcomes. A study may measure how tense someone feels immediately after one short session (state anxiety or momentary stress). That result does not show that repeated play reduces symptoms of an anxiety disorder over weeks or months. The reviews available here examine different games, ages, platforms, and outcomes, so their findings cannot be combined into a single ranking or universal recommendation.

The strongest defensible conclusion is narrow: certain games may help certain people feel calmer for a while. The evidence does not show that every relaxing-looking game works, that one genre is best, or that gaming can replace assessment and professional treatment for persistent or disabling anxiety.

A 2021 systematic review by Pallavicini, Pepe, and Mantovani examined 28 studies published from 2006 through 2021 on commercial, off-the-shelf games and stress or anxiety outcomes. Across children, adults, and older adults, some studies reported benefits after a single short session; others examined different play schedules. The review also noted that participants were disproportionately young adults.

Those findings support a modest interpretation: playing some ordinary games may temporarily shift attention, provide an absorbing break, or reduce reported tension. They do not establish a durable clinical effect. Results varied with the game’s characteristics, platform, session length, and the people who played. Because the studies used different designs and measurements, the review did not identify a universally effective genre or title.
Why a “calming” label is not enough
A game can be visually gentle yet demanding, competitive, frustrating, or difficult to stop. Conversely, a familiar action or puzzle game may feel regulating to one player and overstimulating to another. The reviewed studies do not prove that any particular emotional response will occur for you. Treat your own reaction as a practical selection criterion, not as evidence that the game treats anxiety.
Purpose-built serious games: promising, but not proven
Serious games are designed around an intervention rather than entertainment alone. Examples in the evidence include computerized cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) games and games that provide biofeedback. Abd-Alrazaq and colleagues’ 2022 systematic review assessed randomized controlled trials of serious games for anxiety.

It included 33 studies, with 22 entered into meta-analyses. The review reported low-quality evidence that computerized CBT games could reduce anxiety compared with no intervention, and low-quality evidence for biofeedback games compared with conventional video games. Some exergame comparisons were supported by very-low-quality evidence. The authors highlighted risk of bias, small samples in some analyses, participants who did not have anxiety in many studies, and games adapted from purposes other than anxiety care.
The review’s conclusion was that findings remain inconclusive and that serious games should be considered complementary to existing interventions. “Therapeutic” in a product description therefore does not mean clinically equivalent to a therapist, a validated treatment course, or medical evaluation.
What CBT or biofeedback elements might mean
A CBT-based game may turn skills such as identifying anxious thoughts, gradual exposure, or behavioral practice into interactive tasks. A biofeedback game may use a sensor to show information related to breathing or another physiological signal. The studies reviewed do not establish that one implementation, device, or commercial product works for everyone. Look for clear explanations of the technique, the target population, the evidence, and the limits rather than relying on the label alone.

Exergames: movement is useful, superiority is unproven
Exergames combine game play with physical movement. A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis found improvement within some exergame groups, but no significant difference between exergames and control interventions. It also found no significant advantage from adding an exergame to usual care for anxiety.

This means an exergame can still be a practical way to move if you enjoy it, but the cited evidence does not justify calling exergames a superior anxiety treatment. Any benefit may reflect activity, social contact, routine, or the game itself; these studies do not isolate those components consistently.
Casual games and evidence in young people
A 2020 review of casual videogames identified 13 studies involving nine different games. It described promising effects for anxiety, depression, stress, or low mood, but the evidence base was small and heterogeneous. It does not support recommending one named casual game as treatment.

A broader 2024 review assessed randomized studies of digital applied and casual games for people aged 6 to 24. It reported 145 eligible studies across many mental-health outcomes and populations. Those results are relevant to youth research, not a blanket conclusion about all adults or every casual game. Age, developmental stage, symptoms, supervision, and the game’s design all affect how findings should be interpreted.
How to use a game as a low-risk coping activity
The following approach treats gaming as an experiment in short-term coping, not a prescription. It is practical guidance, not a result measured by the cited reviews.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Define the immediate goal. Decide whether you want a brief distraction, a transition after work, a calming routine before bed, or a way to connect with someone. A specific goal makes it easier to tell whether the session helped.
- Choose a controllable activity. Prefer a game whose pace, sound, difficulty, and social demands you can adjust. Avoid assuming that a genre is inherently relaxing; your own stress response matters more than a label.
- Set a stopping point before starting. Use a timer, a natural level boundary, or a written end time. If stopping repeatedly feels impossible, the activity is not functioning as a calming break for you.
- Check in afterward. Rate tension, worry, and physical activation before and after play using a simple 0–10 scale. Note sleep, irritability, and whether you felt restored or merely absorbed. A one-off improvement is useful information but not proof of treatment.
- Keep the result in context. Continue basics that support wellbeing—regular sleep, movement, social contact, and recommended care. Do not use a game to delay help when anxiety is persistent or impairing.
How to choose among game approaches
| Approach | What the cited evidence examined | What can reasonably be concluded | Important limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commercial off-the-shelf games | 28 studies reviewed in 2021; children, adults, and older adults; varied platforms and session lengths | Some games may reduce stress or state anxiety in the short term | Effects varied; studies disproportionately involved young adults; no durable clinical benefit or best genre established |
| Serious games using computerized CBT | Randomized trials in a 2022 review; 33 studies included, 22 meta-analyzed | Low-quality evidence of lower anxiety versus no intervention | Risk of bias, small analyses, mixed participant diagnoses; findings inconclusive |
| Serious games using biofeedback | Randomized trials compared with conventional video games | Low-quality evidence of benefit in the review | Evidence quality and study methods limit confidence; not a substitute for clinical care |
| Exergames | 2020 systematic review/meta-analysis; within-group changes and comparisons with controls or usual care | Some groups improved, but no significant advantage over comparison interventions | Small samples, varied designs and populations |
| Casual videogames | 2020 review: 13 studies involving nine games | Promising signals for anxiety, stress, depression, or low mood | Small evidence base; no named game can be recommended as treatment |
| Digital applied and casual games for youth | 2024 review: 145 randomized studies in ages 6–24 across many outcomes | Shows substantial research activity in younger populations | Cannot be generalized automatically to all adults, disorders, or games |
When gaming may make anxiety worse
The reviews do not establish a universal list of harmful game features, but practical warning signs are straightforward. If a game leaves you more agitated, keeps you awake, triggers repeated losses or social conflict, or encourages spending and continued play against your wishes, it is not serving as stress relief. Competitive matchmaking, frightening content, flashing effects, intrusive notifications, and unpredictable rewards can be poor fits for someone already activated.
Best Value
- Stop or switch activities when physical tension, anger, panic, or rumination rises during play.
- Lower sound and visual intensity, disable notifications, or choose an offline mode if stimulation is the problem.
- Do not sacrifice sleep, meals, work, school, medication routines, or appointments for a session.
- If attempts to cut back repeatedly fail, discuss the pattern with a qualified professional rather than treating it as a willpower test.
Games are not a replacement for anxiety care
Seek qualified mental-health or medical care when anxiety is persistent, severe, causes major avoidance, disrupts sleep or daily functioning, or comes with panic, depression, substance use, or thoughts of self-harm. A clinician can assess whether symptoms fit an anxiety disorder, another condition, medication effects, or a combination of causes and can discuss evidence-based options.
The serious-games review explicitly places games alongside existing interventions, not in place of them. Commercial stress-relief games have even less evidence for treating a diagnosed disorder. If you already have a treatment plan, use gaming only in ways that fit that plan and tell your clinician about any serious-game program you are considering.
Do you need a special console, headset, or sensor?
No specific physical product or hardware has been shown to be necessary for the effects reported in these reviews. Studies used consoles, personal computers, smartphones, mobile consoles, and virtual-reality systems. The platform was one of several factors that differed between studies, so the evidence does not justify buying a particular device for anxiety relief.
Choose equipment you already own, can use safely, and can stop easily. A sensor may be part of a particular biofeedback intervention, but its presence alone does not establish that the program is effective. Check privacy practices before connecting health-related data, especially in apps that collect account, voice, movement, or physiological information.
How to interpret claims you see online
- “Clinically proven” should identify the population, comparison, outcome, study design, and duration—not just testimonials.
- Immediate calm is a different claim from reduced anxiety symptoms over time. Ask which one was measured.
- A randomized trial is informative, but confidence also depends on sample size, preregistration, adherence, missing data, and risk of bias.
- A review result applies to the games and participants studied. It is not evidence that every title in a genre works the same way.
- “Natural” or “drug-free” does not mean risk-free or adequate treatment.
The reviews summarized here come from different years—2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024—and address different questions. Reading the population and outcome next to each statistic prevents a short-term stress finding from being mistaken for a disorder treatment effect.
A practical bottom line for players
If a game reliably helps you decompress for a bounded period and does not interfere with sleep, responsibilities, relationships, or care, it can be a reasonable coping tool. Keep expectations modest: the best-supported claim is temporary relief for some people with some games. Purpose-built CBT, biofeedback, and exergame products remain promising or mixed rather than established replacements for therapy. For ongoing or disabling anxiety, use games as an optional complement while seeking qualified care.
