Yes. You can send a Streamlabs Desktop scene to YouTube Live using YouTube’s software-encoder workflow; that workflow requires a YouTube server URL and stream key, not a capture card. A capture card is generally for bringing a signal from another device into your computer. If the video file is already on the computer running Streamlabs, the encoder route does not require that hardware.
There is one important qualification: the current official Streamlabs guides reviewed here explain scenes, sources and going live, but do not establish the exact current controls for adding a local prerecorded video, looping it or managing playback. Check those controls in your installed version before relying on a particular file-source procedure or unattended playback.

What you need—and what the capture card would do
You need a computer running Streamlabs Desktop, a video file available to that computer, and a YouTube channel that can start a live stream. Streamlabs acts as the software encoder: it sends the contents of a scene to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder instructions use a server URL and stream key; they do not make a capture card part of this setup.

It is not required just to pass a file already on the streaming computer through an encoder scene. The distinction is about the source of the video, not whether the destination is YouTube Live.

Prepare Streamlabs and YouTube
Check the computer and app requirements
Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide, published May 20, 2026, lists Windows 11 or macOS 12, 8 GB RAM, integrated graphics and 10 GB storage as minimum requirements. It recommends Windows 11 or macOS 13 or later, 16 GB RAM, an Intel Core i5 11th/12th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X or higher, Nvidia RTX 20/30 series or AMD RX 5000/6000 series graphics, and an SSD of at least 512 GB. These are the requirements stated in that guide, not a guarantee that every computer meeting them will perform identically.
Connect an encoder to a YouTube live stream
YouTube’s official encoder guidance describes connecting encoder software with a YouTube Live server URL and stream key. Streamlabs can also connect to YouTube through its sign-in flow. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to the associated stream.

- Sign in to YouTube in Streamlabs Desktop, then use Go Live to create an event.
- Alternatively, create the live event in YouTube’s dashboard first, open Streamlabs’ Go Live window, select that event and confirm before starting.
Use the path that matches whether you want Streamlabs to create the event or have already set it up in YouTube. Check the selected event before you start broadcasting so the encoder is not pointed at the wrong live destination.
Add and verify the prerecorded video scene
Streamlabs’ current guides describe building a scene from sources, but the official pages reviewed do not document the current local prerecorded-video source type or its playback controls. Because those controls can depend on the installed version, use the source options shown in your own Streamlabs Desktop rather than relying on an unverified menu path. Confirm that the selected source is the intended local video file and that it appears in the scene preview.
Before going live, check the complete output rather than assuming the file is playing correctly:

- Confirm the video is visible in Streamlabs’ preview.
- Watch the audio mixer while the file plays and verify the video’s sound is reaching the stream mix at an appropriate level.
- Confirm the intended YouTube event is selected and ready.
- Check the YouTube live preview or status before treating the broadcast as live to viewers.
Do not assume the file will loop, restart, or continue unattended. Verify the playback and looping controls in your installed version, and monitor the broadcast if continuous playback matters. Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide notes that macOS desktop-audio capture requires audio-routing software; if the file’s sound is not reaching the mixer on a Mac, that may be the missing piece.

Streamlabs’ May 20, 2026 Quick Start Guide explains the relevant relationships, rather than prescribing one universal setting: output resolution should be equal to or smaller than the base resolution; frame rate controls motion smoothness; higher resolution and frame rate need higher bitrate; and the encoder choice determines whether the GPU or CPU does the encoding.
For a prerecorded video, use an output resolution and frame rate appropriate to the source and the computer’s ability to encode and upload it. Raising resolution or frame rate can increase the bitrate demand. If the stream stutters or drops frames, reduce the output demands or address the computer or upload bottleneck before trying again. The guide reviewed here does not establish a single bitrate, resolution or keyframe interval for every file and connection, so do not treat an arbitrary number as universally correct.

Troubleshoot before and during the broadcast
The video is missing from the preview
Check that the scene contains the intended video source and that the source points to the file you mean to play. The current official Streamlabs guides reviewed do not establish exact local-file menu labels, so compare the available source and playback controls in your installed version.
The picture appears but the stream has no video audio
Check the Streamlabs mixer while the video is playing. If the audio is absent there, verify the source’s audio routing and device selection. On macOS, Streamlabs’ Quick Start Guide says desktop-audio capture requires audio-routing software.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Confirm that Streamlabs is connected to the intended YouTube event and that the server URL and stream key are the ones for that event. If you created the event in YouTube first, select it in Streamlabs’ Go Live window before confirming. Do not share or publish the stream key.

The stream is unstable or dropping frames
Resolution and frame rate affect bitrate needs, and the chosen encoder uses either the GPU or CPU. Check those settings and the computer’s available encoding capacity; lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce demand. A capture card does not solve an encoder or upload-capacity problem when the source is already a local file.
The video stops or does not repeat as expected
Verify the playback and loop behavior in the installed Streamlabs version before going live. The official guides reviewed do not establish the current local-file looping controls or guarantee unattended playback, so monitor the stream if it must remain active.
Copyright and YouTube suitability
Being able to send a video through an encoder does not mean you have permission to broadcast it. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check whether any license covers live broadcasting on YouTube. YouTube may apply its platform rules to live streams and their content; technical setup alone does not establish that a particular video is permitted or eligible for monetization.
