Steam’s published terms do not state a routine expiration date for Wallet funds. That is not the same as a promise that every balance is protected from every event: Steam’s agreement includes an unclaimed-property clause, and local law or an account-specific problem can matter.
A Steam Wallet balance is prepaid credit for purchases through Steam. It has no cash value outside Steam and is non-transferable, so a balance that does not routinely expire still cannot normally be cashed out, sent to another account, or exchanged for money. Refund rules are separate and depend on where and when the funds were purchased.

What Steam’s current terms say about expiration
No routine expiration period is stated
The current Steam Subscriber Agreement reviewed for this guide does not give Wallet funds a standard “use by” date. It does not describe a general 30-day, one-year, or other inactivity countdown after which an ordinary balance automatically disappears. The most accurate answer is therefore that Steam’s published terms do not state a routine expiration date.

That wording matters. It describes what the published terms say; it is not an unconditional guarantee covering every future policy version, jurisdiction, account action, or legal requirement. Steam can change Wallet limits and other service terms, and the agreement that applies to your account is the one to check if a particular balance is disputed.

Wallet credit is prepaid Steam spending
Steam describes the Wallet as a prepaid balance used for purchases through Steam. The agreement says Wallet funds have no cash value outside Steam and are non-transferable. In practical terms, the balance is useful for buying eligible games, downloadable content, software, and other items sold through Steam, but it is not a bank account or a general-purpose payment balance.
- No ordinary cash-out: the terms do not provide a right to exchange Wallet funds for cash.
- No ordinary transfer: you cannot normally move an existing balance to another Steam account.
- No external spending: the balance cannot be used as money at unrelated merchants.
- No automatic expiry date in the agreement: the reviewed terms do not set a routine deadline for using the funds.
The unclaimed-property clause is a separate caveat
Steam’s agreement says: “Steam Wallet funds that are deemed unclaimed property may be turned over to the applicable authority.” This is not the same thing as a published inactivity timer. The agreement reviewed does not provide a universal number of months or years after which every inactive Wallet expires.
Whether unclaimed-property rules apply, what event triggers them, and which authority is involved can depend on applicable law and your location. Do not assume that a balance is affected merely because you have not logged in recently, and do not assume that an account can never be affected under any circumstances. For an account-specific concern, check the live agreement for your region and contact Steam Support.

Expiration is different from refunds, transfers, and account closure
Several questions are often combined under “Does Steam balance expire?”, but they concern different rules. A balance can lack a routine expiration date while still being non-refundable in many situations, impossible to transfer, or subject to an account or legal action.

Expiration versus refundability
Expiration asks whether unused credit automatically becomes unavailable after time passes. Refundability asks whether Steam will return money for a particular purchase. Steam’s refund policy creates a limited route for Wallet funds bought directly on Steam; it does not turn the Wallet into a cash account or create a general right to withdraw an old balance.
Expiration versus cash value
The agreement’s “no cash value outside Steam” language applies even if the funds remain available. Keeping a balance for years does not create a right to redeem it for currency, send it to a friend, or move it to a different account.
Expiration versus account closure or restriction
The reviewed agreement does not state a general inactivity deadline for Wallet balances. That does not answer every question about a closed, restricted, compromised, or otherwise inaccessible account. Those situations require Steam Support and the terms applicable to the account. Do not invent an inactivity threshold from the absence of an expiration date.
Expiration versus changes in policy or local law
Steam notes that Wallet limits may change. The service can also update its agreements, while consumer-protection and unclaimed-property rules vary by jurisdiction. Treat the current agreement and current support guidance as controlling for a new transaction or an account dispute.

When unused Wallet funds may be refundable
The 14-day policy window for direct Steam purchases
Steam’s Refunds page, last updated April 23, 2024, says you may request a refund for Steam Wallet funds purchased on Steam within 14 days, provided none of those funds have been used. This is a policy eligibility window, not a statistic and not a promise that every request will be approved regardless of the facts.
Both conditions matter:
- Purchase channel: the funds must have been bought directly on Steam.
- Timing: the request must be made within 14 days of the purchase.
- Use: none of the purchased funds may have been spent.
The agreement contains broad language that “Funds added to the Steam Wallet are non-refundable and non-transferable.” Read in context, that contract language must be paired with the published refund-policy exception for an eligible, unused Wallet purchase made on Steam. Quoting the contract sentence alone would hide the route Steam describes for these recent direct purchases.
How to submit a request
- Sign in to the Steam Support service using the account that made the purchase.
- Open the support flow for the relevant Steam Wallet purchase.
- Provide the purchase date, amount, and any information Steam requests to verify the transaction.
- Submit the refund request and keep the confirmation or ticket details.
Support labels can change, so follow the current options shown after you sign in rather than relying on an old screenshot or a third-party guide. If the purchase is outside the 14-day window or any of those funds were used, the published policy does not describe it as eligible under this specific Wallet-refund route.
What “unused” means for the request
The policy condition is that none of the purchased Wallet funds have been used. Spending only part of a purchase can therefore matter; do not assume that the unspent remainder automatically qualifies. Keep the transaction separate from other Wallet activity when possible, because Support may need to determine whether the purchased funds were used.

Third-party Steam Wallet cards follow a different path
Steam says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, specifically including Steam Wallet cards bought from third parties. A code or card purchased at a retailer is therefore not handled like a Wallet top-up purchased through Steam’s own checkout.
If a third-party card has a problem, start with the retailer or seller that took payment. Keep the receipt, order number, card packaging, and redemption details. Steam Support may be able to explain redemption issues, but Steam’s published refund policy says Valve cannot provide a refund for the outside-Steam purchase itself.
The purchase channel should be checked before counting days or asking whether the balance has expired. A direct Steam purchase can fall within the 14-day unused-funds policy; a card bought elsewhere is excluded from that route even if it is recent.
Direct purchase and third-party card: a practical comparison
| Question | Wallet funds bought on Steam | Steam Wallet card bought elsewhere |
|---|---|---|
| Routine expiration date in the reviewed terms | Not stated | Not stated for the resulting Wallet balance; the purchase channel affects refunds |
| Refund route described by Steam | Request through Steam Support within 14 days if none of the purchased funds were used | Steam says it cannot refund outside-Steam purchases; contact the retailer |
| Does an unused balance become cash? | No; Wallet funds have no cash value outside Steam | No; redemption does not create a cash-out right |
| Can the balance be transferred? | No ordinary transfer; funds are non-transferable | No ordinary transfer after redemption |
| Best first step for a problem | Check the transaction in Steam Support | Contact the seller or retailer, retaining proof of purchase |
Common situations and what they mean
“I have not used Steam for several months.”
The reviewed agreement does not state that several months of inactivity automatically expires a Wallet balance. The absence of a timer is not a guarantee against every account or legal issue, but ordinary inactivity alone is not described as a routine expiration event.

“I bought credit yesterday and changed my mind.”
If the credit was purchased directly on Steam, none of it was used, and the request is within 14 days, Steam’s published policy describes a refund-request route. Submit it through Steam Support rather than trying to transfer the balance or cash it out.
“I bought a card from a shop and the code did not work.”
Steam’s refund policy excludes purchases made outside Steam, including third-party Wallet cards. Gather the receipt and contact the shop or seller. Do not treat the issue as an expired balance unless Steam or the retailer provides evidence of an expiration or redemption problem.
“My account was closed, restricted, or inaccessible.”
This is an account-access question, not proof that Wallet funds expired. Contact Steam Support, explain the account status, and ask what options apply to the balance. The published terms do not provide a universal inactivity deadline that can resolve every closure scenario.

“I want to give my remaining balance to someone else.”
The agreement says Wallet funds are non-transferable. You cannot normally move an existing balance to another account. A separate gift or prepaid-card purchase is not the same as transferring funds already loaded into your Wallet.
Checklist before contacting Steam Support
- Identify whether the money was added through Steam checkout or a third-party card.
- Record the purchase date, amount, currency, and transaction identifier.
- Check whether any part of that specific Wallet purchase was spent.
- Use the current Steam Support flow for the account that made the purchase.
- Describe the actual issue—refund request, redemption problem, account access, or legal notice—rather than calling every problem “expiration.”
- For a possible unclaimed-property or jurisdiction-specific matter, review the agreement and rules that apply where you live.
Steam’s published terms support a simple everyday answer: there is no routine expiration period stated for Wallet funds. The useful qualification is just as important: Wallet credit remains restricted to Steam, is not ordinary cash, cannot normally be transferred, and may be handled differently when a refund request, third-party purchase, account action, or unclaimed-property rule is involved.
