Can Sorghum Help European Agriculture Adapt to Climate Change?

Yes—as one option for diversifying crops in suitable locations, not as a universal replacement for maize. European sources describe sorghum as more tolerant of heat and drought, but drought tolerance does not guarantee successful germination, a good harvest, or better yields on every farm. Local growing conditions, variety, intended use, and access to buyers all matter.

Why European farmers are considering alternatives

Climate risks are already affecting agriculture across Europe. The European Commission identifies heat, drought, floods, pests, diseases, and declining soil health among the pressures on farming. Impacts vary by region: southern Europe faces especially strong heat and water shortages, while warmer conditions may make warm-season crops more viable in some northern areas. Those potential gains do not cancel out losses elsewhere. The Commission’s overview of climate impacts in Europe describes this uneven picture.

The Commission’s 2026 heatwave guidance says crop losses caused by droughts and heatwaves have tripled over the past 50 years. It identifies sorghum as more tolerant of high temperatures than maize. That makes sorghum relevant to adaptation discussions, but the broad climate guidance is not a farm-level trial or a guarantee of a particular harvest. The European Commission’s heatwave guidance provides the context.

What sorghum could contribute

Sorghum’s heat and drought tolerance makes it a plausible crop-diversification choice where hotter, drier conditions threaten existing summer crops. The European Research Council (ERC) describes its growing role in European crop rotations. A 2022 review discusses broader crop traits and uses, but its global scope should not be mistaken for evidence that sorghum outperforms other crops on European farms. The review of sorghum’s traits and uses and the ERC’s 2025 account of European sorghum describe the crop’s potential.

The ERC’s 13 March 2025 article reports that total European sorghum production increased 57% over the preceding decade; it does not specify the exact start and end years or identify the underlying statistical series. The same article reports 103,000 hectares of grain sorghum in France in the prior year and more than 100,000 tonnes in Catalonia in 2023, of which over 90% went to animal feed. These are figures reported by the ERC, not a dataset it says it collected. Sorghum can also be used as human food, so its possible role is not limited to livestock feed.

Why drought tolerance does not guarantee a crop

A crop can tolerate drought better than another and still be vulnerable when it is establishing. An EU CAP Network practice abstract describing a Rhineland-Palatinate example warns that low soil moisture can reduce sorghum germination and hamper stand development. In that example, early-ripening varieties are needed for the described warm sites below 300 metres. That is a local recommendation, not a rule for every European growing area. The EU CAP Network’s sorghum cultivation example explains the regional conditions.

Farmers therefore need to consider the whole growing cycle, not just a crop’s performance during dry spells. Whether a variety can mature within the local season, whether moisture is available at sowing, and whether late-season stress is likely all affect its suitability.

How to weigh sorghum against maize

The available European sources do not establish a general comparative yield advantage for sorghum, nor do they provide a complete cost comparison for European farms. The Joint Research Centre’s 2026 outlook forecasts summer-crop yields broadly, not sorghum specifically. At the worst end of its EU summer-crop forecasts, yields were 14% below the five-year average; that figure must not be read as a sorghum forecast. The JRC’s 2026 crop-risk outlook sets out that wider seasonal context.

Before choosing sorghum over maize, assess the farm’s conditions and market rather than relying on a general claim about resilience:

  • Heat and drought exposure: Is the field likely to face the stresses for which sorghum is being considered?
  • Growing window: Can a locally suitable variety mature before the end of the season, including if late-season stress occurs?
  • Establishment moisture: Is there enough soil moisture around sowing for germination and early stand development?
  • Intended output: Is the crop for grain, forage, animal feed, or human food?
  • Seed and market access: Are locally adapted varieties and a suitable buyer or processing route available?

Those factors determine whether sorghum is a workable diversification choice in a specific place. The evidence supports considering the crop where conditions fit; it does not support replacing maize everywhere or predicting a guaranteed yield benefit.

What farmers should check before planting

Start with locally adapted certified seed and advice that reflects the farm’s location, intended use, and maturity window. Where the local growing season calls for it, an early-maturing variety may be important; the Rhineland-Palatinate example should not be applied automatically to other regions. Commercial growers should also confirm that seed selection aligns with a realistic route to market.

Seed-production isolation requirements are a separate compliance matter from choosing a variety to grow. The EU directive sets isolation distances for sorghum seed production; growers involved in producing seed should check the consolidated law and applicable national rules for current requirements. The consolidated EU seed-law text is the reference point.
