Yes. Someone who has your Steam login and can complete Steam Guard authentication—or who uses a computer already authorized for your account—may be able to download and launch your games. They may also reach account areas beyond your library. Do not lend your password; use Steam Families, Remote Play, or a second license instead, depending on the situation.
What access to your Steam account allows
A person using your live Steam session is acting as your account, not as a restricted “play-only” guest. Depending on the device, settings, and extra confirmations Steam requests, they could:

- Download and launch games in your library.
- Leave the account signed in or save credentials on another computer.
- View or change profile, privacy, friends, chat, and account settings.
- Access cloud or local saves, play history, and community features.
- Interact with Steam Wallet funds, purchases, inventory, market listings, or trades.
- Change security details or interfere with your ability to recover the account.
The exact information visible varies with the Steam client, device state, privacy settings, and verification requirements. The important distinction is that password sharing exposes your account identity and its associated data, not just a game.
Is a Steam username enough to log in?
Usually not. A public profile name is not necessarily your private account login name, and a normal unfamiliar-device login also requires the password plus Steam Guard authentication. The additional step may be an email code or approval in the Steam Mobile app.

That protection can fail in practical terms if someone controls your email account, steals Steam Guard data, obtains malware on an already-authorized computer, uses saved credentials, or finds a session that was left signed in. Valve lists phishing, email compromise, malware, stolen authenticator information, and authorized devices among account-takeover routes: Steam Guard account-security guidance.
Does Steam Guard make sharing safe?
No. Steam Guard verifies a login; it does not create a permission limited to launching games. Steam may use email codes or mobile approval, and Valve describes the mobile authenticator as the stronger option because approval is tied to a physical device. Valve also says there is no limit to the number of machines that can be authorized, which is useful for your own devices but is not a recommendation to share an account.

Can two people use one Steam account at the same time?
Do not rely on simultaneous use of one account. Steam behavior can vary with the client, online or offline status, the game, and the device. A second session might interrupt the first, show conflicting activity, or fail to launch a game. Even when a particular combination appears to work, both players are using one account identity.
- Achievements, playtime, friends activity, and messages can be attributed to the wrong person.
- Cloud saves or local saves may overwrite or conflict with each other.
- Trading, market activity, and account changes become difficult to attribute.
- Game-specific multiplayer, anti-cheat, or session rules may block or penalize activity.
Use separate Steam accounts for separate players. For the same title at the same time, plan on separate licenses unless the game provides another supported arrangement.
Safer ways to let someone play
Steam Families
Steam Families is designed for close family members using their own Steam accounts. Steamworks documentation says a family can include access to eligible games from up to five other members’ libraries: Steam Families documentation. The other person signs into their own account; they do not need your password.

Access is a shared license, not permanent ownership. Games and downloadable content can be excluded because of developer, platform, operating-system, region, or other restrictions. If two family members want to play the same game simultaneously, Steam says another family member may need to own an additional copy: Valve’s Steam Families announcement.

Remote Play streams or controls a game running on the host computer. The host remains logged into Steam with the game available, while the other person connects through Steam Link or a supported Steam client. Valve’s setup manual is at How to Use Remote Play.
This is useful for local co-op and split-screen games when the guest does not need independent ownership. It does not give the guest your library or a separate login to your account.

Buy a second license
When two people need independent online sessions of the same game, two licenses are the cleanest solution. It avoids account-identity conflicts and the one-license limitations that can apply in Steam Families.
How to check whether someone used your account
No single symptom proves an account takeover. An unfamiliar game status could come from a family member, Remote Play, a shared computer, an offline session, or delayed synchronization. Check stronger evidence in this order:
- Open Steam Mobile’s Authorized Devices view and look for computers or sessions you do not recognize. Valve says the app can show access and let you revoke it: Steam Mobile security features.
- Review Steam Guard prompts and emails for new logins, password changes, email changes, or security-setting changes.
- Check recent playtime, installed or uninstalled games, saves, friends, chats, profile changes, inventory, market activity, trades, purchases, and Wallet transactions.
- Inspect the connected email account for unfamiliar sessions, forwarding rules, recovery changes, or reset messages.

- Use Steam’s security controls to Sign out everywhere and remove unfamiliar authorized devices.
- Change the Steam password to a long, unique password that you have never used elsewhere.
- Secure the email address attached to Steam: change its password, enable its own two-factor authentication, and review recovery details, forwarding rules, and recent sessions.
- Confirm or re-enable the Steam Mobile Authenticator. Do not approve any unexpected sign-in request.
- Scan every relevant computer and phone for malware, malicious browser extensions, cheats, pirated software, fake utilities, suspicious mods, or downloads. Signing out is not enough if an infected device reconnects.
- Review purchases, Wallet activity, trades, market listings, inventory, messages, profile details, and security settings for changes.
- If you cannot regain control or account ownership details were changed, contact Valve only through official Steam Support. Ignore supposed support agents who contact you through Discord, Steam Chat, or other unofficial channels.
