Can Software Detect a Fake Graphics Card? How to Verify It Without Guessing

Software can expose many counterfeit graphics cards, but it cannot authenticate every card by itself. Utilities such as GPU-Z and Windows Device Manager can reveal a GPU identity, device ID, subsystem vendor, memory information and video-BIOS details that conflict with the seller’s claim. You should then compare those results with the card’s model sticker and, when available, its original retail box. Matching evidence increases confidence; it is not an absolute guarantee.

What software can—and cannot—tell you

A fake graphics card is often an older or lower-tier board sold as a newer, faster model. The deception may involve a modified firmware image, a relabeled cooler or sticker, an altered listing, or a combination of those changes. Software is useful because it reads information from the GPU and its firmware rather than relying only on the outside of the card.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That information can reveal contradictions. For example, a utility may identify a different GPU generation than the model advertised, show an implausible amount or type of memory, or report identifiers that belong to another board vendor. GPU-Z has documented detection for certain older GPUs that were relabeled as newer products. That is valuable, but it is not a promise that GPU-Z recognizes every counterfeit, every generation or every fraud technique.

A clean software report is therefore evidence, not a certificate. A counterfeiter can sometimes alter firmware or labels, and a legitimate card can appear unusual after a board-vendor firmware update or a driver issue. The reliable approach is to make the software report, hardware markings and manufacturer documentation agree.

How the verification methods compare

Check What it examines What it can reveal What it cannot prove
GPU-Z Reported GPU identity, device and subsystem information, memory details and BIOS version Known relabeling patterns, implausible specifications and identity contradictions That every field is genuine or that every counterfeit method has been detected
Windows Device Manager PCI hardware identifiers exposed by Windows The device identifier (DEV) and subsystem vendor identifier (SUBSYS) used to identify the GPU and board vendor That a matching identifier guarantees an authentic retail card
Card sticker and retail box Physical model, serial and product markings Whether the physical reference agrees with the listing and software report That a printed label has not itself been replaced or copied
Video BIOS file The firmware image currently readable from the card Supporting information for a model-specific support investigation A universal authenticity verdict; the cited support procedure is not a certification test

Software checks are convenient because they do not require opening the card. Physical inspection is a separate cross-check and may not be possible before purchase, especially when buying online.

Before you run a test: establish the exact claim

Ask for the complete make and model, not just a product family name such as “RTX card” or “Radeon gaming card.” Record the model printed in the listing, the promised memory capacity, and the board partner if the seller names one. Different versions of the same GPU can use different memory sizes, cooler designs and subsystem identifiers.

Request clear photographs of the front and back of the card, the model sticker and the original box if the seller says it is included. Do not treat a seller’s screenshot as a substitute for your own readout after delivery. Keep the listing, invoice and messages until the card has passed your checks and the return period has expired.

Step 1: inspect the card and packaging

AMD’s support guidance describes the original retail box or the sticker attached to the graphics card as the quickest and easiest physical way to identify an AMD card. Use that reference for any brand, while recognizing that labels and boxes can also be falsified.

  • Original half height bracket matches with the low profile brackets make the Glorto GeForce GT 610 graphics card fit well with all PC tower, small form factor and HTPC(except micro form factor)
  1. Photograph the model sticker, serial or part number, connector layout and cooler before installing the card. Capture the whole card as well as close-ups so later changes are documented.
  2. Compare the sticker’s exact model wording with the seller’s claim. Watch for a missing suffix, an inconsistent memory designation or a board-partner name that does not match the cooler or box.
  3. If a box is supplied, compare its model and part number with the card. A box from a similar model is not proof that the card inside is the advertised one.
  4. Do not remove stickers, heatsinks or screws merely to perform this check. The available guidance calls for observing the label, not disassembling the board, and opening a card can damage it or affect a return claim.

Step 2: read the card with GPU-Z

Download GPU-Z from TechPowerUp’s official download page and check the current release there rather than relying on an old version number. GPU-Z is an information utility; its availability and supported hardware can change.

  1. Install or launch GPU-Z on the computer containing the card. If Windows shows more than one display adapter, select the discrete graphics card rather than an integrated adapter.
  2. Record the reported GPU name, device ID, subsystem or board-vendor information, memory type and capacity, bus interface and BIOS version. Save screenshots that include the complete window and the date of the check.
  3. Compare each field with the exact model’s specifications from the GPU or board manufacturer. A name that looks right is not enough if the memory size, bus width or device identifier belongs to a different product.
  4. Pay attention to an explicit warning or implausible identity. GPU-Z’s documented counterfeit detection covers specific old GPUs relabeled as newer models; it should not be interpreted as universal detection across all brands and generations.

If GPU-Z reports a different GPU from the listing, stop before installing performance drivers or modifying firmware. Save the report, photograph the card and ask the seller or manufacturer to explain the difference. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not by itself a final legal or technical verdict.

Step 3: check Hardware Ids in Windows

Windows exposes a second software-readable identity through Device Manager. AMD’s example uses a string such as PCIVEN_1002&DEV_67FF&SUBSYS_0B041002&REV_CF. In that format, the DEV segment is the device identifier and the relevant SUBSYS segment identifies the subsystem vendor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Display adapters, right-click the graphics card and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Details tab, open the Property menu and select Hardware Ids.
  4. Copy every displayed ID or capture a screenshot. Do not record only the first line if several revisions are listed.
  5. Interpret the DEV and SUBSYS values against the GPU manufacturer’s documentation and the exact board model. Confirm that the subsystem vendor is the board partner you were promised, where such a mapping is documented.

A driver-installed card can still expose an identifier that does not fit the seller’s description. Conversely, an identifier that fits the claimed GPU does not prove that the entire physical board is genuine. Use this step to corroborate GPU-Z and the label, not to replace them.

  • No external power supply and the all-solid-state capacitor keeps low power consumption and high performance, supports Windows 10/8/7/Vista/XP(not compatible with windows 11).

Step 4: treat the video BIOS as supporting evidence

NVIDIA Support instructs users to use GPU-Z to save a GeForce video BIOS ROM when support requests it during a model-specific investigation. In GPU-Z, use the arrow next to BIOS Version and choose Save to file.

Saving the ROM can help a manufacturer or qualified technician compare the firmware with an expected image. It does not turn the file into a general-purpose authenticity certificate. A modified or copied BIOS can make a counterfeit appear more plausible, while an unusual but legitimate board BIOS can produce a confusing result. Do not flash a replacement BIOS simply because a listing looks suspicious; an incorrect firmware image can disable the card.

How to interpret common outcomes

GPU-Z identifies an implausible or older GPU

Stop and preserve the evidence. Compare the GPU identity, device ID, memory information and BIOS version with the manufacturer’s specifications for the claimed model. The documented GPU-Z detection examples show that the utility can catch certain relabeled older GPUs, not that it catches every counterfeit. Contact the seller and the card maker before attempting any modification.

The DEV or SUBSYS value does not fit

First verify that you are reading the correct display adapter and that you understand the identifier format. Confirm the exact board partner and model, because a subsystem value can identify the vendor of the board rather than the underlying GPU designer. If the value still conflicts with the claim, request a written explanation and keep the card unused while a return option remains open.

The label or box disagrees with the software

Photograph both the physical marking and the software window in the same inspection record. A swapped label, an incorrect box or a firmware mismatch could explain the conflict, but none should be ignored. Ask the seller or manufacturer to reconcile the model and part number before relying on the card.

Every check agrees

Agreement among the listing, GPU-Z, Device Manager, the card sticker and the box raises confidence. The available guidance does not establish a consumer test that proves authenticity from software alone, so retain purchase protection and manufacturer support options until the card has been accepted.

What not to mistake for authentication

  • A benchmark score: The cited material provides no universal benchmark score that identifies a genuine card. Performance can vary with drivers, cooling, power limits and system configuration.
  • A single screenshot: Screenshots can be edited, taken from another computer or cropped to hide contradictory fields.
  • A matching sticker: A label can be copied or replaced. It is a physical reference, not independent proof.
  • A BIOS dump alone: The support workflow for saving a BIOS is diagnostic assistance, not a consumer authenticity guarantee.
  • A normal-looking cooler: Counterfeit boards can use a genuine-looking shroud, and legitimate cards from different revisions can look different.

A practical decision path for buyers

  1. Before purchase: obtain the exact model, clear photos and the stated memory configuration. Prefer a seller with a clear return process.
  2. At delivery: photograph the packaging and card before installation. Compare model and part numbers with the listing.
  3. During the first test: run GPU-Z, record the identity and memory fields, and check Device Manager Hardware Ids.
  4. If evidence conflicts: stop, preserve screenshots and photos, and contact the seller or manufacturer. Do not flash firmware or open the cooler while a return or warranty claim is pending.
  5. If evidence agrees: keep the records with the invoice. Agreement is reassuring, but continue to use normal warranty and return protections.

When professional help is justified

Ask the GPU maker or a qualified repair provider for help when identifiers disagree, the card has an unusual BIOS, the serial label appears damaged, or the seller disputes the evidence. Provide the exact model claim, photographs, GPU-Z screenshots, Device Manager IDs and any saved BIOS file requested by support. This gives the investigator enough context to distinguish a counterfeit from a legitimate regional or board revision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not disassemble a working card as a routine authenticity step. Physical inspection means checking accessible markings and packaging unless a qualified technician has a specific reason to inspect the board and you understand the warranty consequences.

Bottom line: use software first, then verify the hardware

Software is worth using because it can expose identity contradictions without opening the card. GPU-Z and Device Manager provide complementary readings, while the model sticker and original box supply a separate physical reference. None of these checks, alone or in combination, is described as a universal proof of authenticity. The safest conclusion comes from a consistent story across the seller’s claim, software identifiers, BIOS information, physical markings and manufacturer support.
