Smart-home devices can help catch certain problems—especially water leaks and electrical hazards—before they cause extensive damage. Some insurers offer eligible customers devices or a policy discount, but a sensor does not automatically lower your premium, and the available examples do not show that AI predicts disasters broadly. Check the exact device, policy, location, data-sharing terms, and quoted savings before buying.
What can smart-home technology actually detect?
Connected sensors monitor specific conditions in a home, such as water near a leak detector, unusual water flow, temperature changes, or electrical anomalies. Depending on the device, it may sound a local alarm, send an app alert, connect to a monitoring service, or help control water flow. The alert gives someone a chance to respond; it does not guarantee that damage will be prevented.

That distinction matters when a product or insurance program uses the word “AI.” Amica describes Phyn as AI-powered for leak detection, prevention, and conservation. The insurer examples discussed here establish monitoring, alerts, and some water-control functions—not that AI independently forecasts every disaster, reduces claims, or causes lower premiums across the insurance market.

Do insurers offer smart-home discounts?
Yes, some insurers describe programs that provide eligible policyholders with devices, discounts, or both. The terms differ by insurer and may depend on the policy, state, approved device, device count, connectivity, monitoring, and data sharing. These examples are program-specific, not a promise that any smart device will earn a discount.

| Program | What the insurer says | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| USAA Connected Home | USAA says eligible members save an average of $133 a year and can save up to 8% through the program. These are USAA’s program claims, not a market-wide estimate. | Requires a USAA homeowners policy and at least two eligible First Alert water leak detectors, connected through the manufacturer’s app and sharing data with USAA. USAA says the program is unavailable in North Carolina and available only to some members in Wisconsin. Optional alerts include freeze detection and high temperature. |
| Nationwide Smart Home | Eligible homeowners policyholders may receive free or discounted devices from approved vendors. Nationwide says a policy discount may be available for LeakBot. | Vendor, state, and other eligibility limits apply. Nationwide does not establish a universal discount amount in the program information summarized here; ask for the amount that applies to your policy. |
| Amica Smarter Home Savings | Amica describes premium discounts for certain professionally or centrally monitored devices in many states. It names Phyn, StreamLabs, Flume, and Moen for water-related monitoring or control functions. | Savings may differ for self-monitored and third-party-monitored devices, may not be available in every state, and may require regulatory approval in additional states. |
For USAA’s stated average annual saving and maximum discount, confirm your own estimate before purchasing: the program’s average and “up to” figure do not tell you what an individual household will receive. For every program, ask whether the precise model qualifies in your state and whether monitoring or data sharing is a condition of the offer.
Which devices serve which purpose?
Point-of-use leak sensors
A small leak detector sits near a likely source of water, such as a sink, toilet, dishwasher, or water heater. A kit may send an app alert when its sensor detects water. It covers the locations where sensors are placed; it is not the same as monitoring water use throughout the plumbing system.

Whole-home water monitors and shutoff devices
A whole-home monitor looks for water activity across a broader part of the plumbing system, and some systems can remotely or automatically shut off water. Amica names products that offer water monitoring or remote shutoff. Before choosing one, check plumbing compatibility, installation needs, network requirements, and whether your insurer accepts that exact model.

Electrical and temperature monitoring
Nationwide identifies Ting as an electrical-fire-prevention device in its program. USAA describes optional freeze and high-temperature alerts. These are different functions from detecting water at a specific appliance: check what each device monitors, how it alerts you, and whether an insurer’s current approved list includes it.

How to check whether a device will save you money
- Ask your insurer for its current eligibility rules. Confirm the approved brand and model, required number of devices, policy type, state availability, and whether a new or existing policy qualifies.
- Get the discount estimate in writing. Ask what your premium would be with the device and without it, when the discount begins, and whether it recurs at renewal. A stated maximum or program average is not your personal quote.
- Confirm monitoring and data requirements. Ask whether the device must be professionally monitored, connected to a particular app, or share data with the insurer. Review current consent and privacy terms before enrollment. USAA explicitly requires data sharing for the Connected Home discount described on its program page; do not assume the same data policy applies to other insurers.
- Compare total cost with confirmed savings. Include the device, installation, any subscription or monitoring service, and maintenance. A discount is not necessarily a net saving if the equipment or ongoing service costs more than the reduction in premium.
- Match coverage to the hazard. Compare what is sensed, how much of the home is monitored, whether the system only alerts or can shut off water, and whether it relies on local alarms, an app, or a monitoring service.
- Check compatibility before buying. Confirm plumbing and network requirements for water systems, installation needs, and whether the insurer accepts the exact configuration. A generic smart water leak detector kit may be useful for alerts, but buying one does not by itself qualify you for an insurance discount.
How significant are water-related losses?
Nationwide’s agent information attributes two figures to the Insurance Information Institute (III): water and freezing accounted for 23% of homeowners insurance losses, and the weighted average homeowners loss for water and freezing was $17,059. Nationwide cited III material accessed September 25, 2025. These are figures as attributed by Nationwide to III, not a prediction of what a particular household will lose or save.
