Yes—technically, an SMR could supply an AI data centre, either directly or through a connected grid. The harder question is timing. New reactors still need licensing, financing, fuel arrangements, construction and grid approval, so they are unlikely to provide large-scale AI-campus power in the immediate term. The International Energy Agency (IEA) expects SMRs to become more important after 2030, while near-term growth is supplied by a mix of renewables, gas, coal and existing nuclear plants.
That makes SMRs a potential part of a portfolio rather than a universal replacement for the grid. Whether one fits depends on the campus load, expansion schedule, reliability target, cooling system, site and regulatory structure.

Why AI data centres are considering nuclear power
AI training and inference clusters use far more electricity than conventional enterprise servers. Accelerators run at high utilisation, cooling systems add a substantial continuous load, and campuses are being designed for rapid expansion. The IEA’s Energy and AI outlook projects global electricity generation serving data centres to rise from 460 TWh in 2024 to more than 1,000 TWh in 2030 and 1,300 TWh in 2035 in its Base Case. These are modelled projections, not measured future demand.

|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 460 TWh | Estimated global generation serving data centres |
| 2030 | More than 1,000 TWh | Projected global generation, not a guaranteed outcome |
| 2035 | 1,300 TWh | Projected global generation in the same scenario |
In the same forecast, renewables provide nearly half of additional data-centre electricity demand through 2030. Natural gas and coal together provide more than 40% of that additional demand. Nuclear power becomes more prominent toward the end of the decade and beyond. This mix matters because a reactor project that is technically suitable may still arrive after a campus has already secured power from other sources.

What an SMR is, and what it is not
A small modular reactor is a nuclear reactor designed with a lower output than a conventional large plant and with components intended for modular or factory-oriented manufacture. “Small” does not mean a single standard size. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes a current data-centre design range from 10 MW to 1 GW, with future facilities potentially reaching 4 GW or more. That range spans transportable microreactors, SMRs and large light-water reactors.
An AI campus therefore cannot be matched to an SMR by nameplate capacity alone. Engineers must model the present load, expected expansion, redundancy requirement, power-quality limits, cooling architecture and connection to the wider grid. A 50 MW installation, a 300 MW campus and a multi-gigawatt training site may need completely different combinations of reactors, grid capacity, storage and backup generation.
Potential advantages
- Firm output: A nuclear unit can produce electricity continuously, subject to outages and maintenance, instead of depending on wind or sunlight at a particular hour.
- Compact generation: Smaller designs may fit a constrained industrial site more easily than a conventional large plant, although nuclear exclusion zones, security areas and cooling equipment still require significant land.
- Co-location: DOE says advanced designs may be placed close to a large customer, potentially reducing transmission needs and supporting greater grid independence for security-critical facilities.
- Modular construction: Factory fabrication is intended to improve schedule and cost control. It remains an objective of the technology, not a result demonstrated for every design.
None of these points proves that co-location will always be cheaper or simpler. Local utility rules, transmission ownership, emergency planning, cooling-water access and community approvals can dominate the final design.

How an SMR could supply an AI campus
Grid-connected supply
The most conventional arrangement is a reactor connected to the regional grid, with the data centre buying electricity under a power contract. The campus receives firm power but remains part of the same transmission and balancing system as other customers. This avoids treating the reactor as a private island, but the operator still faces interconnection queues, transmission upgrades and regional congestion.

Co-located or behind-the-meter supply
A reactor and data centre could share a site and connect through private equipment. This may reduce some transmission requirements, but it does not automatically remove grid obligations. The DOE cites Federal Energy Regulatory Commission concerns about an Amazon–Talen proposal involving up to 960 MW from the Susquehanna nuclear plant. Efforts to add power behind the meter were put on hold over questions about transmission-system costs and how utility customers would be affected.
Hybrid supply
A campus can combine nuclear generation with grid imports, renewable contracts, batteries, demand management and conventional backup generators. This approach can cover reactor maintenance, staged campus construction and short-term load spikes without sizing the reactor for every possible future peak. It also allows the operator to compare the physical electricity used with contractual clean-energy matching. The IEA’s fuel-mix analysis concerns physical supply, including the grid mix; it is not a statement about the contractual claims made by individual operators.
When could SMRs actually power data centres?
The broad official outlook points to the 2030s rather than an immediate build-out. DOE says licensing, demonstration and deployment of new reactor designs will take years and that widespread commercial advanced reactors are likely in the 2030s. The IEA expects the first U.S. SMRs to contribute to data-centre electricity after 2030. Neither statement establishes the operating date of a specific project.
Technology companies have announced plans to finance more than 20 GW of SMRs in the United States, according to the IEA’s 2025 outlook. A separate IEA nuclear outlook lists announced SMR plans of varying maturity totalling up to 25 GW, largely associated with data-centre demand. Those numbers represent plans and announcements, not installed capacity, binding delivery schedules or verified firm output.

What “announced” or “selected” means
An announcement may be a memorandum, feasibility study, procurement intention or financing plan. A project still needs a site, an approved design, permits, a construction contract, financing, fuel and a route to market. DOE’s Gen III+ SMR programme lists funded plans, including TVA’s work to advance a GE Vernova Hitachi BWRX-300 at the Clinch River site in Tennessee and Holtec’s plan for two SMR-300 reactors at the Palisades site in Michigan. Selection for programme support is not a completed plant and does not guarantee a commissioning date.
Existing nuclear plants are a different near-term option
Restarting or contracting with an existing nuclear station is separate from building a new SMR. In September 2024, Microsoft and Constellation agreed to a 20-year power-purchase agreement tied to restarting Three Mile Island Unit 1 for data-centre operations. The project concerns an existing reactor, not an SMR design moving through first-of-a-kind licensing.
The Amazon–Talen proposal illustrates both the attraction and the difficulty of co-location. The proposal involved buying a co-located data centre and up to 960 MW from the Susquehanna plant. FERC’s concerns about behind-the-meter transmission costs show why a private arrangement can still affect regulated infrastructure and other utility customers.

Licensing and schedule risk
New reactors pass through design review, site licensing, construction approval, commissioning and operating oversight. Advanced designs may require regulatory work that is unfamiliar to authorities and suppliers. A data-centre developer cannot treat a target year in a corporate announcement as an available power date until those steps, grid work and fuel contracts are credible.

First-of-a-kind capital cost
DOE notes that large up-front capital costs can make initial deployments expensive. Repetition and factory production are intended to reduce cost and schedule risk, but the first units may not benefit from a mature supply chain. Financing must account for interest during construction, possible delays, contingency generation and the risk that a design changes during licensing.
Grid rules and metering
Who owns the reactor, who pays for shared substations and transmission, and how electricity is metered are substantive questions. A data centre may want dedicated power while regulators must protect reliability and allocate network costs fairly. A contract that appears to provide “behind-the-meter” power can still require approvals from utilities and federal or state regulators.
Fuel availability
Many advanced reactor concepts require high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU). DOE says the United States is working to secure uranium supply, particularly HALEU for advanced designs. Until mining, conversion, enrichment and fuel fabrication capacity expands, fuel availability can constrain deployment even when a reactor design is technically ready.

Nuclear generation produces spent fuel. It must be cooled and stored while an interim or permanent disposal pathway is developed. A site agreement therefore needs long-term storage, security, ownership and decommissioning responsibilities—not only the electricity price during operation.

Cooling, safety and physical security
AI campuses already require extensive heat rejection. An SMR adds its own cooling systems, safety equipment, protected areas and emergency planning. Water availability, air-cooling performance, extreme-weather resilience and physical-security requirements should be assessed together rather than assuming that a compact reactor has a compact total footprint.

Renewables can be deployed in stages and are expected to meet much of the incremental demand through 2030, but variable output may require storage, firm grid supply or dispatchable backup. Gas can provide flexible capacity and is expected to remain significant in the IEA Base Case, but it has fuel-price and emissions exposure. Existing nuclear plants can provide firm low-carbon electricity sooner than a new SMR where a restart or power contract is viable, but suitable sites and available output are limited.

- Define the electrical load: Record current IT demand, cooling demand, power-quality requirements, minimum load, peak load and the schedule for each expansion phase.
- Set reliability boundaries: Decide whether the reactor is primary supply, one element of N+1 capacity, or a source that supplements a resilient grid connection.
- Screen sites: Check transmission capacity, water or air-cooling feasibility, seismic and flood conditions, security zones, emergency planning and community acceptance.
- Verify project maturity: Separate a public announcement from a licensed design, financed construction project and contracted operating date.
- Model the portfolio: Compare an SMR with renewable power, storage, existing nuclear contracts, gas generation and grid upgrades under delay and price scenarios.
- Assign long-term obligations: Put fuel procurement, spent-fuel storage, decommissioning, insurance, security and regulatory compliance into the commercial model.
- Use staged commitments: Tie final campus expansion or reactor payments to permits, financing, construction milestones and demonstrated power delivery.
What the evidence supports today
SMRs can technically serve AI data centres, and their firm low-carbon output is attractive for campuses that need dependable electricity close to a large load. The evidence does not support saying that a commercial fleet is already powering AI campuses at scale. Official forecasts place the main contribution after 2030, while current programmes and company announcements remain at different stages of maturity.
The realistic near-term strategy is a portfolio: secure available grid and existing-generation capacity, add renewables and storage where they improve cost or emissions performance, and evaluate SMRs as a later firm-power option. A project should be described as “announced,” “planned,” “selected” or “under construction” until permits, financing, fuel and a credible operating schedule justify stronger language.
