Can Skipping Breakfast Make Stress Feel Worse? What the Evidence Really Says

Possibly—but it has not been shown that skipping breakfast causes people to feel more stressed. A 2022 meta-analysis found that people who reported skipping breakfast were more likely to also report stress, while a small cortisol study found altered hormone patterns in habitual breakfast skippers but no difference in self-reported chronic stress. Those findings point to an association, not proof that eating breakfast prevents stress or that missing it will make your day worse.

What the strongest evidence says

The clearest estimate comes from a systematic review and meta-analysis by Zahedi and colleagues, published in Nutrition Neuroscience. It combined 14 observational studies involving 399,550 people from ages 6 through 65 and older. People who skipped breakfast had higher odds of reporting stress: pooled odds ratio 1.23, with a 95% confidence interval of 1.04 to 1.43. In plain language, the skipping-breakfast group and the stress-reporting group overlapped more often than would be expected by chance in those studies. The result does not show that skipping breakfast raised anyone’s stress level.

The same review reported associations between breakfast skipping and depression (odds ratio 1.39, 95% confidence interval 1.34–1.44) and psychological distress (odds ratio 1.55, 95% confidence interval 1.47–1.62). These are also observational associations. They cannot establish that breakfast habits cause a mental-health condition, or that adding breakfast would treat one. Evidence Participants and design Finding related to stress What it cannot establish
Zahedi et al., 2022 14 observational studies; 399,550 people, ages 6 to 65+ Skipping breakfast was associated with reported stress (pooled OR 1.23; 95% CI 1.04–1.43) Whether skipping breakfast caused stress, or whether breakfast reduced it
Witbracht et al., 2015 30 habitual skippers and 35 breakfast eaters; women ages 18–45 Different cortisol patterns in skippers; no difference in self-reported chronic stress What happens in men, other ages, or people who do not habitually skip breakfast
Widaman et al., 2016 40 breakfast eaters and 35 skippers; women ages 18–45 in the Sacramento area Diet-quality differences; among skippers, stress related to some evening food choices Which came first: stress, eating pattern, or food choices
Smith, 2002 Older observational study of daily breakfast cereal consumption Cereal consumption was associated with lower cortisol A causal cortisol benefit; alternative explanations were not ruled out

Why the answer is not simply “yes”

Breakfast habits and stress can influence one another. Someone under pressure may sleep later, rush out the door, lose their appetite, or deliberately delay eating. Conversely, a person who goes many hours without food may notice hunger, low energy, irritability, or difficulty concentrating and interpret those sensations as stress. Work hours, caregiving, income, sleep, physical activity, overall diet, and existing mental-health symptoms can affect both breakfast and stress.

Most of the direct evidence measured people at one point in time or compared people according to their usual habits. A cross-sectional comparison cannot determine the order of events. It cannot tell whether a stressful schedule led to breakfast skipping, whether breakfast skipping contributed to a stressful-feeling morning, or whether a third factor contributed to both.

The studies also used different definitions of “skipping.” In one setting it may mean eating nothing until late morning; in another, it may mean not eating a conventional meal but drinking coffee or having a small snack. That variation makes a single cause-and-effect explanation even less secure.

Cortisol is not the same as feeling stressed

Cortisol is a hormone involved in the body’s daily rhythm and response to challenges. It is a physiological measurement, not a direct score of how worried, overwhelmed, or tense a person feels.

In the 2015 study by Witbracht and colleagues, 30 habitual breakfast-skipping women and 35 breakfast-eating women, all ages 18–45, had different cortisol readings during some measurement periods. The skippers also showed a blunted diurnal cortisol amplitude, meaning the difference between parts of their daily cortisol pattern was smaller. Yet the authors reported: “Self-reports of chronic stress did not differ between the groups.” See the Witbracht et al. study.

That combination matters. A biological signal can differ without a person reporting more stress, and a person can feel stressed without a particular cortisol pattern being measured. The sample was small and included only women aged 18–45, so it cannot define the response for children, men, older adults, or everyone who skips breakfast.

What the diet-quality studies add

Widaman and colleagues studied 40 breakfast eaters and 35 breakfast skippers, also women ages 18–45 recruited in the Sacramento area. Breakfast eaters scored higher on several measures of diet quality. Among skippers, reported stress was linked with some evening food-choice measures.

This result does not mean that breakfast determines the quality of dinner, or that eating breakfast would remove stress. It shows that eating patterns across the day may be related. Stress could affect food choices; food availability and routine could affect stress; or both could reflect other circumstances. The study design could not identify the direction. Read the Widaman et al. study.

What the older cereal finding means

A 2002 study reported that people who consumed breakfast cereal daily had lower cortisol. The authors explicitly noted that alternative explanations could not be ruled out and that more work was needed. It is therefore older, limited evidence—not a recommendation to eat cereal and not proof that cereal treats stress. View Smith’s 2002 study.

Does everyone need breakfast?

No conclusion in these studies shows that every person must eat first thing in the morning. People differ in hunger, work schedules, cultural routines, sleep timing, exercise, medical conditions, and preferred eating windows. The American Heart Association’s 2017 scientific statement reviewed meal timing and cardiometabolic outcomes, not breakfast as a treatment for stress. It described the breakfast evidence as limited and called for longer-term studies. Read the American Heart Association statement.

A practical standard is more useful than a universal rule: choose a routine that lets you function comfortably and maintain an adequate, generally balanced diet. If skipping breakfast leaves you shaky, irritable, distracted, or overly hungry later, eating earlier may be worth trying for comfort and consistency. If you feel well delaying food and can meet your nutritional needs later, the studies do not establish that you must force a morning meal to prevent stress.

How to test whether your own mornings feel different

A short, structured self-observation can help separate a personal pattern from a general claim. It is not a clinical experiment and cannot prove cause and effect, but it can show whether a schedule is workable for you.

  1. Track a baseline for several days. Note wake time, first food or drink containing calories, perceived stress on a simple 0–10 scale, hunger, energy, sleep duration, caffeine, and major stressful events.
  2. Keep the comparison narrow. For another period, eat at a consistent morning time on some days and delay food on others, while keeping sleep and caffeine as similar as practical. Do not change several major habits at once.
  3. Record what actually happens. Write down concentration, irritability, physical symptoms, afternoon hunger, and whether you compensate by eating much more later. A single difficult morning is not a pattern.
  4. Check the whole day. Compare whether each routine allows enough total food, fluids, protein, fiber, fruits or vegetables, and other foods that normally make up your balanced diet. The studies did not test one special breakfast food as a stress treatment.
  5. Stop if you feel unwell. Persistent dizziness, fainting, confusion, severe weakness, or other concerning symptoms are reasons to stop experimenting and seek medical advice.

Choosing a morning routine: practical trade-offs

Routine Potential practical advantage What to watch for What the evidence does not prove
Eat a full breakfast May prevent uncomfortable hunger for people who notice it before midday; can make it easier to distribute food across the day Time, appetite, cost, and whether the meal is actually balanced That breakfast lowers stress or changes cortisol in everyone
Eat a small morning snack Can be a middle option when a full meal feels difficult Whether it supplies enough nutrition and whether hunger returns quickly That a particular snack treats anxiety or chronic stress
Delay the first meal May fit a late schedule or personal appetite Hunger, irritability, concentration, later overeating, and ability to meet nutritional needs That skipping breakfast is harmless for every person or harmful for every person

These are scheduling options, not prescriptions. The cited studies did not compare a defined breakfast intervention with a defined no-breakfast intervention and then measure whether participants became less stressed.

When individualized advice matters

Talk with a qualified clinician or registered dietitian before deliberately changing meal timing if you have a condition or take medication that depends on food timing, are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of disordered eating, or routinely experience faintness or low-blood-sugar symptoms. Children and teenagers may also need age-appropriate guidance because their energy and nutrient requirements differ from adults.

Seek help for ongoing anxiety, depressed mood, panic, sleep disruption, or stress that interferes with work, relationships, or daily functioning. Changing breakfast may alter one routine, but it is not an established treatment for a mental-health condition.

Common mistakes when interpreting the headlines

  • Turning an odds ratio into a personal prediction: an odds ratio of 1.23 from pooled observational studies does not mean every breakfast skipper has 23% more stress.
  • Calling cortisol “stress”: hormone patterns and self-reported experience are different outcomes.
  • Ignoring who was studied: the cortisol and Sacramento diet-quality studies enrolled women ages 18–45, not a representative sample of all adults.
  • Assuming breakfast is a treatment: no cited trial showed that adding a meal prevents stress, depression, or psychological distress.
  • Promoting one product: the evidence does not identify cereal, a supplement, or any other specific food as necessary or uniquely helpful for stress.

Bottom line

Skipping breakfast might make some people feel more uncomfortable, hungry, or less steady during a busy morning, but current evidence cannot say that it causes stress. The best-supported finding is an association: across observational studies, breakfast skippers reported stress somewhat more often. A small study found cortisol differences without a difference in perceived chronic stress. Use your own symptoms, schedule, nutritional needs, and medical context to choose a routine, and treat persistent stress as a health issue deserving appropriate support—not as a breakfast problem alone.
