The action you took—vendor sale or blacksmith salvage—determines every available recovery option. Check Buyback before leaving your session, and protect valuable gear by favoriting it before future inventory cleanup.

This is an item-state question, not a question of character class, armor type, rarity, or platform. A legendary chest piece and a common helmet follow the same recovery rule if they were processed through the same action.

If you sold the armor to a vendor
Use the selling vendor’s Buyback tab
- Return to the vendor who bought the armor.
- Open the vendor interface.
- Select Buyback.
- Find the armor in the list and repurchase it while it is still displayed.
Blizzard’s Diablo IV support guidance identifies Buyback as the recovery route for sold items. The item must still be present in that vendor’s list; Buyback is not a permanent archive of everything your character has ever sold.

Why you should check before doing anything else
The list is temporary, and the support guidance does not establish a guaranteed duration, a fixed number of retained items, or a universal time limit. Treat the recovery window as short in practical terms: stop inventory cleanup, go back to the selling vendor, and inspect Buyback before traveling elsewhere or continuing to sell gear.
What to do if the item is missing
First, make sure you have returned to the vendor that purchased the armor and have opened Buyback rather than the normal purchase inventory. If the item still does not appear, Blizzard’s published Diablo IV guidance provides no second recovery mechanism. Do not assume that contacting support will create a manual restoration; the documented recovery path is the vendor list itself.
Keep the distinction clear: an item that is absent from Buyback is not equivalent to an item that is waiting in another account-wide storage location. The available evidence establishes only the Buyback route, not a separate mailbox, history screen, or support-side rollback for a missing sold item.
If you salvaged or recycled the armor
Salvage is permanent
Salvaging at the blacksmith destroys the armor. Once the salvage operation is completed, Diablo IV treats the item as gone rather than as an item that can be bought back. There is no in-game undo command or recovery list for salvaged gear.

Customer Support cannot restore it
Blizzard’s Diablo IV support information says Customer Support cannot restore items that were deleted or salvaged. Blizzard’s broader wording is explicit: “Customer Support cannot assist with recovering purged items.” That means a support ticket is not a reliable recovery plan for a mistakenly salvaged helmet, gloves, boots, chest, or other armor piece.
The same rule applies if the salvage was accidental, caused by a rushed inventory pass, or discovered immediately afterward. Speed helps with a vendor sale because Buyback can still contain the item; speed does not reverse a completed blacksmith salvage.
Do not search Buyback for salvaged gear
Buyback is tied to vendor sales. A blacksmith salvage is a different action and does not place the destroyed armor into a vendor’s repurchase list. If you know you clicked salvage, focus on replacing the item rather than looking through vendors for a record that will not be created.
Why Blizzard’s general restoration information causes confusion
Blizzard publishes general item-restoration information that describes restoration behavior for some other Blizzard game systems. That material also warns that purged items can disappear permanently. It should not be read as a promise that Diablo IV salvage can be undone.

Use the game-specific rule first: Diablo IV vendor sales have a Buyback path while the item remains listed; Diablo IV salvage is permanent and is not restored by Customer Support. A general restoration page cannot turn a blacksmith salvage into a recoverable Diablo IV transaction.
Immediate response checklist after an inventory mistake
Use the branch that matches the action shown in your recent interaction.
When you sold the armor
- Stop selling, salvaging, changing vendors, or leaving the session while you check.
- Return to the exact vendor that bought the item.
- Open Buyback and look for the armor.
- Repurchase it if it is listed.
- If it is not listed, recognize that the documented recovery route has been exhausted; no additional Diablo IV restoration method is provided in the support guidance.
When you salvaged the armor
- Confirm that the action occurred at the blacksmith rather than at a vendor.
- Do not spend time searching vendor Buyback lists for it.
- Do not rely on a support ticket to restore the item; Blizzard states that salvaged or purged Diablo IV items cannot be restored by Customer Support.
- Replace the lost gear through normal gameplay rather than treating the original item as recoverable.
When you are unsure which action occurred
Use the location and interface you remember. A vendor sale uses a vendor screen and can place the item in Buyback. A salvage uses the blacksmith’s salvage interface and permanently destroys the item. If you can still reach the vendor involved, checking Buyback is the only recovery check that can produce a positive result.
How to prevent another accidental loss
Favorite important armor before cleanup
Favorite gear you may want to keep before selling or salvaging. A Blizzard-hosted Diablo IV forum discussion explains that favoriting prevents the item from being salvaged and sold. This creates a deliberate pause between identifying valuable equipment and performing a bulk cleanup action.

- Inspect the armor before opening a sell or salvage workflow.
- Favorite any piece whose attributes, appearance, upgrade potential, or personal value you want to preserve.
- Perform the cleanup only on items that remain unfavorited.
- After a sale, verify that the intended item—not a neighboring inventory slot—was selected.
- If you realize a sale was wrong, check Buyback immediately instead of continuing the cleanup.
Separate evaluation from disposal
Do not decide whether to keep an item while rapidly clicking through a vendor or blacksmith screen. Evaluate the armor in your inventory first, mark the pieces that must remain, and only then sell or salvage the remainder. This reduces the chance that similar-looking items will be selected under time pressure.
Use the action as a final checkpoint
Vendor sale and blacksmith salvage are not interchangeable cleanup buttons. A vendor sale has a conditional recovery path; salvage has none. Before confirming, pause long enough to identify both the destination and the item selected. That single check matters most for high-value or irreplaceable gear.

“I sold armor five minutes ago. Can I get it back?”
Return to the vendor that bought it and open Buyback. If the armor is still listed, repurchase it. The fact that only a few minutes have passed does not guarantee availability, but it is the right time to check because the list is temporary.

Unfortunately, the timing does not change the result. Completed salvage permanently destroys the armor, and Blizzard’s Diablo IV support guidance says Customer Support cannot restore salvaged items.
“The item is not in Buyback. Can support restore it?”
Blizzard documents Buyback as the recovery mechanism for sold items. If the armor is no longer listed, the Diablo IV guidance gives no further recovery method. General restoration information for other Blizzard games does not establish a Diablo IV exception.
“Does favoriting guarantee that every item is safe?”
Favoriting is the documented protection against selling or salvaging the marked gear. You still need to review un-favorited items carefully, because the protection applies to the items you actually mark rather than to your entire inventory automatically.
What is and is not established about recovery
There is no authoritative percentage, item-count statistic, or published success rate for recovering Diablo IV armor. The outcome depends on the item’s state: sold and still visible in Buyback, or salvaged and permanently purged. Blizzard’s available guidance also does not publish a universal retention period for Buyback, so readers should not plan around a guaranteed number of minutes, transactions, or vendor visits.
The practical decision is therefore binary. Check the selling vendor’s Buyback list at once if the armor was sold. If the armor was salvaged, stop looking for an undo or support restoration and treat it as permanently lost. Favoriting valuable equipment before cleanup is the best way to avoid both situations.
