Can Roku Change Your TV’s Volume? Remote Compatibility, Setup, and Fixes

Yes—if the Roku remote supports TV controls and has been programmed for your television. A Roku TV remote normally includes volume buttons, while a basic remote bundled with some Roku streaming players may control only the Roku interface. Compatible Roku voice remotes can control TV volume (and sometimes power) after a short setup and sound test. Compatibility depends on the exact remote, Roku device, TV and, in some setups, HDMI-CEC or infrared line of sight.

What Roku can and cannot control

“Roku remote” describes several different hardware types, so the Roku logo alone does not tell you whether volume control is available. Roku distinguishes remotes supplied with Roku TVs from those supplied with separate streaming players.

Roku setup Remote characteristics TV volume control Other TV functions
Roku TV with a simple remote Dedicated power, volume, mute and sleep-timer buttons Yes Power and mute are included; the exact button layout varies by remote
Roku streaming player with a basic/simple player remote Roku navigation and playback buttons, without TV-control buttons Usually no Do not assume power or input control
Roku streaming player with a compatible voice remote Microphone or voice button; model may include TV-control buttons Yes after TV-control setup, when supported Power may work, but some televisions support volume and not power
Roku TV with a compatible voice remote Voice button plus TV-control functions on supported models Yes after setup, when supported Capability depends on the remote and television

Roku’s simple-remote guidance identifies the TV version as having TV power, volume, mute and sleep-timer controls. A simple remote shipped with a separate Roku player is a different product and may not send TV commands at all.

For voice remotes, Roku lists the Roku Voice Remote, Roku Voice Remote Pro and Roku Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition as purchase options that can include TV-control capability. Check the current compatibility information for your specific Roku model and television before buying; model names and supported combinations can change.

Identify your remote before changing settings

Look for TV-control buttons

Volume-up, volume-down and mute buttons are the quickest indication that a remote was designed to control a television. A power button can also indicate TV control, but its presence does not guarantee that every TV function will work. Some remotes have TV controls on the side or at the bottom rather than in the main navigation cluster.

Look for a voice button

A microphone or magnifying-glass button identifies a voice remote. Voice capability by itself does not prove that the remote can control your TV. Only certain voice-remote models have the required TV-control hardware and software support, so verify the exact model rather than relying on the word “voice.”

Separate a Roku TV from a Roku player

A Roku TV is a television with Roku software built in. A Roku streaming player or Streaming Stick is an external device connected to a television’s HDMI port. A Roku TV’s supplied remote is expected to provide basic TV functions; an external player’s basic remote may be limited to Roku menus and playback.

Set up volume control during or after Roku installation

During initial setup, Roku may ask whether the voice remote should control the television’s power and volume. Turn the TV volume up, point the remote toward the TV and follow the on-screen sound test. When the test tone or music stops, confirm that the remote changed the TV’s volume before accepting the result.

If you skipped that step, use this menu path on the Roku device:

  1. Press Home on the Roku remote.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Remotes & devices.
  4. Choose Remotes, then select the voice remote you want to configure.
  5. Choose Set up remote for TV control.
  6. Follow the prompts, select the correct TV brand or code when asked, and complete the sound test.

Roku notes that menu wording can vary with software versions. If the labels differ, open the on-screen Remotes & devices section and look for the TV-control setup option. The official procedure is documented at Roku’s TV-control setup page.

Use a direct HDMI connection during setup

If the Roku player is connected through a soundbar or AV receiver, temporarily connect it directly to an HDMI input on the television while identifying the TV brand and running the sound test. This removes intermediate equipment from the setup path and helps Roku detect the television correctly. Reconnect the soundbar or receiver after the test and confirm which device is handling audio.

Pairing is separate from TV-control programming

A voice remote can be paired to the Roku device yet still lack TV-volume programming. Pairing establishes communication with Roku; Set up remote for TV control teaches the remote how to send compatible TV commands. If the remote does not appear in the remotes list, follow Roku’s current pairing procedure at the voice-remote pairing guide before repeating TV-control setup.

How Roku sends volume commands

Infrared (IR)

Some Roku voice remotes use infrared for television controls. IR requires a clear path between the remote and the TV’s infrared receiver. To check whether IR is being used, point the remote at the TV, press a volume button, then cover the front of the remote and press again. If control stops only when the front is covered, the remote is relying on IR.

Remove objects covering the TV’s sensor, aim at the television rather than at the Roku player, and test from a normal viewing position. Bright light or tinted cabinet doors can also interfere with an IR path, so test with the TV’s sensor area unobstructed.

HDMI-CEC

Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) allows compatible HDMI devices to exchange commands. The TV manufacturer may use a brand-specific name for CEC, such as Anynet or SIMPLINK. Turn CEC on in the television’s settings when using a CEC-dependent feature, then power-cycle the TV and Roku if the change is not recognized immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku states that voice commands for TV power or volume use CEC. Therefore, spoken commands can fail when CEC is disabled even when physical volume buttons still work through IR. CEC support is not uniform: a television may accept CEC power commands but not CEC volume commands, or may implement the feature inconsistently.

Soundbars and AV receivers

A Roku remote does not directly operate a separate soundbar or receiver according to Roku’s setup guidance. With HDMI-CEC enabled, the Roku player may influence sound through the HDMI connection, but the result depends on the television and audio equipment. For diagnosis, disconnect the intermediate audio device and test Roku directly with the TV; this distinguishes a TV-control problem from an audio-routing problem.

Troubleshoot volume buttons that do nothing

  1. Confirm the remote type. If it has no TV-control buttons and is a basic player remote, the missing function may be a hardware limitation rather than a fault.
  2. Make sure the TV can be heard. Turn off mute, choose the TV’s internal speakers temporarily and raise the volume with the TV’s own buttons. A silent or muted TV can make a successful setup appear to fail.
  3. Run TV-control setup again. Go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes > [your remote] > Set up remote for TV control, choose the correct brand and repeat the sound test.
  4. Test the IR path. Aim at the TV’s infrared receiver and remove anything blocking it. Use the cover-the-front test to determine whether the remote needs line of sight.
  5. Enable CEC for CEC-dependent control. Turn on CEC in the TV menu under its manufacturer-specific name. This is particularly important when voice commands fail.
  6. Bypass a soundbar or receiver. Connect the Roku directly to the TV during setup, then test volume before restoring the original HDMI arrangement.
  7. Check the requested function. Roku warns that some televisions support volume control but not power control. A working volume button does not prove that the power button is supported.
  8. Use wall power for the Roku player. A player powered from the TV’s USB port can shut down when the TV turns off. Once it loses power, it cannot send a command needed to turn the TV back on. Roku recommends wall power for this situation.

When volume works but power does not

This pattern usually indicates a compatibility boundary, not a defective volume circuit. TV manufacturers expose different functions through IR and CEC, and some models accept volume commands without accepting power commands. Repeat setup once with the correct brand code, verify CEC if you are using voice control, and test the TV’s own remote. If volume remains reliable while power never responds, the television or remote combination may simply support volume-only operation.

Using another remote with a Roku TV

Owners of a Roku TV can often program a cable, satellite or universal remote with the appropriate Roku TV code. Roku’s instructions are available at the universal-remote setup page. Basic compatibility may provide only power, volume and input selection. Navigation through Roku menus, app launching and playback controls depend on the remote’s command set, so a universal remote is not automatically a full replacement for the supplied Roku remote.

Best Value

  • One that does it all: No more juggling remotes. Roku Voice Remote Pro (2nd Edition) powers up your TV, adjusts the volume, and controls your Roku device.

If you need a replacement for an external Roku player, the relevant category is a Roku voice remote with TV controls. Roku lists the Voice Remote, Voice Remote Pro and Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition as models to check. Confirm compatibility with both the Roku device and TV before purchase, then perform TV-control setup after pairing.

Accessories that will not fix volume control

A short HDMI extender can help a Streaming Stick fit when nearby ports or the television’s housing leave too little space. Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K+ setup information describes that physical-fit use case at the setup guide. An HDMI extender does not add TV-volume buttons, repair an unsupported remote, improve IR line of sight or enable missing CEC functions, so it is not a solution to a volume-control problem.

Choosing the right solution

  • You have a Roku TV and its supplied remote: use the TV’s volume, mute and power buttons; replace or re-pair the remote if those buttons stop responding.
  • You have a Roku player and a basic remote: check the model before assuming a setting is wrong. A remote without TV-control hardware cannot be made into a volume remote through software.
  • You have a compatible voice remote: pair it if necessary, then run Set up remote for TV control and complete the sound test.
  • You use a soundbar or AV receiver: test Roku directly to the TV first, then enable and verify HDMI-CEC across the connected devices.
  • You need only basic TV functions on a Roku TV: a programmed cable, satellite or universal remote may provide power, volume and input, but expanded Roku navigation is not guaranteed.

The practical answer is therefore conditional: Roku can control TV volume when the remote has TV-control capability, the remote is configured for that television and the control path—IR or CEC—works. If any of those requirements is missing, changing Roku menu settings alone will not add the function.
