No—not directly with Puppeteer’s documented still-image screenshot API. Page.screenshot() supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP, with PNG as the default. To produce GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, HEIF, or SVG, capture a supported image first and then use a separate converter or encoder that supports the target format. Puppeteer’s screenshot options reference currently identifies version 25.12.0; check the documentation for the version installed in your project.
Which formats can Puppeteer save directly?
Puppeteer documents the still-screenshot image type as 'png' | 'jpeg' | 'webp'. PNG is the default. The Page.screenshot() method captures a page, while ElementHandle.screenshot() can capture a selected element; the guide notes that the element method scrolls an element into view if it is hidden.

You can save a supported image to disk with a path:
Recommended Free Tools
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
Puppeteer infers the screenshot type from the path extension when a path is supplied, but only within its supported image formats. A filename such as page.avif does not add AVIF encoding support. For the documented API and examples, see the Puppeteer screenshots guide.

Can Puppeteer output each requested format?
| Format | Direct still screenshot? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| GIF | No; not in the documented still-image types. | Capture PNG, JPEG, or WebP, then use a separate GIF-capable encoder. Puppeteer lists GIF separately as a video format, which is not support for GIF still screenshots. |
| JP2 | No; it is not in the documented image type. | Convert a supported screenshot with a JP2-capable tool. |
| TIFF | No; it is not in the documented image type. | Convert a supported screenshot with a TIFF-capable tool. |
| AVIF | No; it is not in the documented image type. | Use a separate encoder that supports AVIF. A Puppeteer project issue records an AVIF screenshot feature request, but the current API reference lists PNG, JPEG, and WebP. |
| HEIF | No; it is not in the documented image type. | Convert with a separate compatible encoder. |
| SVG | No; it is not a documented screenshot image type. | Screenshot pixels are raster output. You can construct an SVG wrapper separately, but that does not turn the screenshot into vector artwork. |
The API separately supports binary screenshot bytes or base64 according to its encoding option, and a path saves the image to disk. The quality option does not apply to PNG. These options do not add support for other formats; see the screenshot options reference.
Convert a Puppeteer screenshot to an unsupported format
- Capture a supported source image. Use PNG, JPEG, or WebP with
Page.screenshot(). For example, await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });. - Pass the image to a separate encoder. Choose a tool whose current documentation explicitly lists the target format—GIF, JP2, TIFF, AVIF, or HEIF. For SVG, decide whether you need a wrapper containing the raster image or actual vector artwork; a wrapper is not vectorization.
- Verify the result. Check the file’s actual format rather than relying on its extension, and open it in the application or service that will consume it.
Encoder availability, options, transparency and color handling, and any native dependencies depend on the conversion tool and deployment environment. Puppeteer’s screenshot API does not establish those details, so validate them for the encoder and runtime you choose.
Choose a source format and validate the output
There is no universal best source or target format established by Puppeteer’s API documentation. Compare the actual output for your use case:

- Does the destination accept the format?
- Does the result preserve the visual details your page needs?
- What file size does your chosen encoder produce for this content and its settings?
- Does transparency and color handling meet the requirement?
- Can the production environment run the necessary encoder and dependencies?
Do not assume one format will always be smaller or look better; the result depends on the content, encoder, and settings.
Troubleshooting
The output has the requested extension but is not that format
A suffix does not encode or convert image data. Save as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, then run an encoder that supports the target. Confirm the resulting file’s actual format.
The screenshot call rejects a requested type
Use one of the documented still-image types: png, jpeg, or webp. Then add a separate conversion step for the requested output.

A GIF output is expected from the video format setting
Puppeteer lists GIF as a video format separately. That does not mean Page.screenshot() produces a GIF still image; use an external GIF-capable encoder for a still screenshot.
The converter works locally but not in deployment
Check that the deployed runtime includes the selected encoder and its required dependencies, and that the deployed build supports the target format. These requirements vary by converter and environment.
PNG rejects a quality setting
Puppeteer documents quality as inapplicable to PNG. Choose an applicable supported format and settings for capture, or apply the desired encoding during the separate conversion step.

API behavior differs from an example
The official screenshot reference surfaced as version 25.12.0, while the video format reference surfaced as 25.10.0. Confirm the documentation corresponding to the Puppeteer version installed in your project before relying on version-specific behavior.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its screenshot endpoint returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it does not directly provide the unsupported formats discussed above, so a separate conversion step is still needed when you require one of them. For supported output, make one request:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request details. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Puppeteer’s GIF video format mean it can save a GIF screenshot?
No. GIF appears as a video format separately from the still-image screenshot types; use a separate encoder for a GIF still image.

Does wrapping a screenshot in SVG make it vector artwork?
No. An SVG wrapper can contain raster screenshot pixels, but those pixels remain raster rather than becoming vector artwork.
Can ScreenshotNeo return AVIF or TIFF directly?
No. ScreenshotNeo’s documented output options in this article are PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; unsupported image formats require a separate conversion step.
