The PS5 drive therefore cannot be turned into a supported PS3-disc player by changing a setting or installing an accessory.
An unofficial alternative exists in development: KB-RPCS3 is an experimental PS5 port of the RPCS3 emulator. It is an early, source-only alpha that requires a specifically prepared, jailbroken PS5 and your own PS3 firmware and game files. It is not a plug-in-the-disc feature, has no downloadable PS5 package, and has only a small number of project-reported game tests.

What Sony officially supports
PlayStation Support’s backward-compatibility page states: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” That is the direct answer for anyone asking whether a PS3 Blu-ray game can be inserted into a PS5 and played through Sony’s normal software.
The official PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual reinforces the same limitation. It says PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 format software cannot be played from disc. This applies to physical PS3 game media; it is not a statement that every PS3 title is unavailable in every form on every service.

Consequently, there is no supported disc-backward-compatibility mode to enable, no menu option that unlocks PS3 playback, and no accessory that converts the PS5 drive into a PS3-compatible player. A PS5 can play supported PS4 and PS5 software, but PS3 discs are outside that compatibility list.
Why a homebrew emulator is a different proposition
Homebrew changes the question from “Does the PS5 support this disc?” to “Can an unofficial emulator run a version of the PS3 software after I prepare the console and provide compatible files?” Those are technically and practically different routes.
KB-RPCS3 describes itself as an unofficial PS5 port of RPCS3, the PS3 emulator. Its repository labels the project Alpha 0.1.0 and says there is no downloadable PS5 package. The documented route is to build the source yourself and deploy the resulting title folder on a jailbroken PS5 using additional homebrew components.

That process does not make the PS5 disc drive understand PS3 game discs. The project documentation instead lists PS3 firmware and the user’s own game images or packages as required inputs. In other words, the experimental route works with files prepared for the emulator, not with a retail disc inserted into the console and recognized like a supported PS5 game.

KB-RPCS3’s published status
The available documentation describes an early development project rather than a consumer-ready application:
- Alpha 0.1.0 is published as source code, not as a ready-to-install PS5 download.
- The project says installation requires building from source and deploying the title folder yourself.
- The project says it includes none of the required homebrew tools, PS3 firmware or game files.
- The exact Alpha 0.1.0 source had not completed console regression testing at the time described in the project documentation.
- Other PS5 firmware versions and loaders may work, but the project identifies them as untested.
These details matter because an emulator repository can look like a compatibility announcement even when it is only an engineering preview. A source release is not evidence that a general PS5 owner can download one package, insert a disc and play an entire PS3 library.
Requirements listed for the tested setup
KB-RPCS3 documents one tested configuration. The project’s reported setup is narrow, and changing any component may change the result.

Meeting this list still does not guarantee that a particular game will run. The project’s own documentation cautions that its compatibility evidence is limited and that the rest of the PS3 catalog is untested.

What the documented installation path involves
The repository does not describe a consumer installer. Its path is a development workflow with several prerequisites:
- Use a compatible, prepared console. The documented test machine is a jailbroken PS5 Slim on firmware 13.60. A different model or firmware should be treated as unverified rather than assumed compatible.
- Set up the homebrew environment. The listed configuration uses etaHEN, kstuff lite and ShadowMountPlus. These are dependencies of the project’s tested arrangement, not features supplied by Sony.
- Obtain the project source. Alpha 0.1.0 is source-only. There is no official binary package in the repository that can simply be copied to a stock PS5.
- Build the source. The project says the user must compile the software. The documentation does not present this as a one-click installation.
- Deploy the title folder. After building, the resulting folder must be deployed through the homebrew setup. This is separate from inserting a retail disc.
- Provide PS3 system software and game data. The documented setup expects the user’s own
PS3UPDAT.PUPand own game images or packages. KB-RPCS3 states that it supplies neither. - Test each title independently. A successful emulator launch does not establish general compatibility. Performance and boot behavior can vary by game and by the exact console environment.
Because the source release had not finished console regression testing, even following those steps exactly should be understood as experimentation rather than a guaranteed installation procedure.
Reported game results—and what they do not prove
KB-RPCS3 reports results from a development build on one PS5 Slim. These are project-reported observations, not independent testing, and they should not be generalized to every PS5, firmware version or game.

The frame-rate figure for Grand Theft Auto IV is a project-reported development-build result in a particular gameplay situation, not a benchmark for all scenes or systems. Likewise, “playable” is the project’s description and does not promise a fixed frame rate, complete stability or correct behavior from start to finish.

Disc playback versus emulator file loading
A retail PS3 disc and an emulator-ready game package are not interchangeable in the PS5 workflow. Sony’s supported software path rejects PS3 discs. The homebrew project’s documented path instead expects game images or packages supplied by the owner.
That distinction answers a common follow-up: owning a PS3 disc does not, by itself, create a supported way to launch that disc on a PS5. The experimental project does not advertise a disc-conversion feature, and its documentation does not say that the PS5 drive can dump or authenticate PS3 media for you.
For a reader whose specific goal is to use a physical collection, the practical hardware route is a PlayStation 3 console. Sony’s PlayStation 3 user guide documents PS3-format disc use on PS3 systems. This is a separate console solution, not a PS5 feature or a homebrew requirement.

Common misconceptions and failure points
“The PS5 has a disc drive, so it should read PS3 discs.”
A drive’s physical ability to read optical media does not provide the operating-system, security and emulation support needed to run PS3 software. Sony explicitly excludes PS3 discs from PS5 compatibility.

“KB-RPCS3 is a normal PS5 app.”
It is not presented that way. The repository identifies it as an unofficial Alpha 0.1.0 source project with no downloadable PS5 package. Building and deploying it requires a prepared homebrew environment.
“If one game works, the library works.”
The reported tests cover three titles, and the project says every other PS3 game is untested. Results for one game cannot establish compatibility for another.
“A different firmware should work because the project lists one.”
The documented setup uses firmware 13.60 on one PS5 Slim. Other firmware versions and loaders may work, but the project marks them as untested, so they should be treated as experimental variables.

The reported WWE ’12 test includes slowdowns, and Grand Theft Auto IV is reported at roughly 13–27 frames per second while driving. The project’s wording does not establish consistent performance, complete compatibility or bug-free operation.
Bottom line for PS3 disc owners
If you want to play a PS3 disc, a PS5 is not the supported device: Sony says PS3 discs are incompatible, and the PS5 manual says PS3-format software cannot be played from disc. KB-RPCS3 demonstrates an interesting but very early homebrew-emulation experiment, not a way to insert PS3 discs into a PS5. Its published state requires a jailbroken PS5 Slim configuration, several homebrew dependencies, source compilation, PS3 firmware and your own game files, with only limited project-reported tests.
For dependable physical-disc playback, use a PlayStation 3. Consider the PS5 homebrew route only as a technically demanding experiment whose compatibility, performance and firmware support remain limited and unproven beyond the documented setup.
