Yes—Proton VPN can work with Netflix, but only as a best-effort, paid-plan feature rather than a guaranteed way to unlock every country’s catalog. Proton’s current guidance says streaming services require a paid Proton VPN plan and a valid Netflix subscription. Netflix can still identify and block VPN addresses, limit you to titles it licenses worldwide, or refuse unsupported experiences such as live events and ad-supported viewing.
The guidance below reflects the official Proton VPN and Netflix documentation available in October 2026. It is not a new independent server-by-server test, so there is no verified success rate, speed score, or promise that a particular server will work every time.

What the answer means in practice
A paid Proton VPN connection can make Netflix see the country of the VPN server rather than your normal internet location. That may change which catalog Netflix offers, but it does not guarantee access to a particular film or series. Netflix controls playback and licensing, and it may recognize the VPN’s shared IP address at any time.
- Paid Proton VPN: Proton lists streaming support on all paid plans and makes a paid plan the supported route for Netflix.
- Free Proton VPN: Proton says it does not stop Free users from trying Netflix, but Netflix often blocks IP addresses used by Proton’s free servers. Proton’s streaming guide says a Free plan must be upgraded to stream video content.
- Netflix account: You still need an active Netflix subscription. A VPN is not a substitute for an account or a way around Netflix billing.
- Catalog changes: The server country affects the apparent location, yet Netflix may show only titles with worldwide licensing when it detects a VPN.
- Unsupported cases: Netflix says VPNs are not supported for live events or ad-supported experiences.
Because IP addresses are blocked and replaced over time, “works with Netflix” describes compatibility, not a permanent unblocking guarantee.

Free versus paid Proton VPN
| Option | What the official guidance says | What to expect with Netflix |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Proton does not prevent users from trying Netflix, while its streaming guide says video streaming requires an upgrade. | Free-server IP addresses are often blocked by Netflix; successful playback is not supported or dependable. |
| Paid plan | Proton’s Netflix instructions require a paid plan, and its streaming page lists streaming on all paid plans. | The supported option, but individual servers can still trigger a proxy message or show a restricted catalog. |
These statements do not establish that every paid server works at all times. Netflix’s detection rules and Proton’s available addresses can change without a published success percentage. If a paid connection fails, switching to another server in the same country is a normal troubleshooting step rather than evidence that the entire service is incompatible.
What Netflix may show while a VPN is connected
Worldwide-licensed titles only
Netflix explains that a VPN can make your connection appear to come from another location. When Netflix detects that arrangement, it may limit the catalog to titles for which it has worldwide licensing. In that situation, a show that is normally available in your home country may disappear. Netflix’s guidance says you may need to disconnect the VPN to see titles available in your actual region: Netflix’s explanation of watching through a VPN.
Country catalogs are not guaranteed
Proton says the selected server location determines the apparent country and that catalog availability varies by country. That is an explanation of how location is represented, not a promise that a named title will play from that country. Rights can differ by title, language, account region, and time.

Live events and ad-supported viewing
Netflix’s official proxy-error guidance states: “VPNs aren’t supported for watching Live events on Netflix or if you’re on an ad-supported experience.” Do not assume a paid Proton connection will make either category work. The statement appears in Netflix’s VPN or proxy error guidance.
How to set up Proton VPN for Netflix
Use a paid Proton VPN plan, install the current app for your device, and sign in to both services. Proton’s setup guide covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad, Android TV, Fire TV, and Apple TV: How to watch Netflix with Proton VPN.
Windows, macOS, or Linux
- Install the Proton VPN desktop application and sign in.
- Choose a server in your home country, as Proton’s setup instructions recommend. If your goal is to view another catalog, choose a server in that country while understanding that catalog switching is not assured.
- Connect and wait for the app to show an active connection.
- Open Netflix in a browser or the desktop-supported viewing method and sign in with your valid subscription.
- If Netflix reports a proxy or VPN, disconnect, connect to another server in the same country, and try again.
Android or iPhone/iPad
- Install the Proton VPN mobile app from your device’s official app store and sign in to a paid account.
- Select a server in the desired country; for ordinary home viewing, Proton recommends the home-country server.
- Approve the operating system’s VPN connection request and confirm that the app reports connected.
- Open or restart the Netflix app. If the old location persists, fully close Netflix before reconnecting.
Android TV, Apple TV, and Fire TV
- Install Proton VPN on a supported TV platform and sign in, following the TV app’s on-screen instructions.
- Connect to the home-country or desired-country server.
- Launch Netflix after the VPN connection is active.
- For Amazon Fire TV devices, Proton’s streaming guide describes sideloading its Android TV app. A Fire TV Stick is optional hardware for a reader who lacks a compatible streaming device; it is not required when a supported TV or streaming box is already available.
Proton’s separate streaming documentation is available at Proton’s streaming guide. Device menus and app availability can change, so use the current instructions shown in the app store or on the device.

Choosing a server for better reliability
Start nearby
Proton recommends a nearby Plus server for speed and reliability. A nearby server in the country you need generally creates less distance for your traffic than a distant server in that same country. Proton does not publish a universal speed result for this choice, so treat it as practical guidance rather than a measured guarantee.

Try another server in the same country
If Netflix displays a proxy message, or video starts but repeatedly buffers, disconnect and select another server in the same country. Shared VPN addresses can be treated differently by Netflix, and one address may be blocked while another remains usable.
Avoid Secure Core for streaming
Proton says destination-country Secure Core servers do not always support streaming and that Secure Core is not optimized for streaming quality. Use a regular server when Netflix playback is the priority. Secure Core’s privacy routing and streaming reliability are separate goals; selecting it should not be your first fix for a catalog or playback problem.

Fixing “You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”
The message confirms that Netflix is rejecting the current connection, not that Proton has suffered an outage. Work through the checks below in order.
1. Confirm the account and plan
- Verify that the Netflix subscription is active.
- Check whether the account uses an ad-supported experience. Netflix says VPNs are unsupported for that experience.
- If you are on Proton Free, upgrade to a paid plan for the supported streaming path; Free-server addresses are often blocked.
2. Check the apparent country
- With the VPN connected, open Fast.com.
- Select Show more info.
- Inspect the client country shown by the test. Netflix recommends this check in its proxy-error instructions.
- If the country is unexpected, disconnect and reconnect to the intended Proton server.
3. Make a fresh connection
- Close Netflix completely, not just the current episode.
- Disconnect Proton VPN.
- Restart the Proton VPN app and connect to another regular server in the same country.
- Restart the computer, phone, or TV if the app continues to report the old location.
- Open Netflix again only after the VPN shows an active connection.
4. Clear local data
When using a browser, clear its Netflix site data or cache and sign in again. Proton also recommends clearing DNS cache. The exact command depends on the operating system, so use the operating system’s current DNS-cache procedure rather than applying a command intended for a different platform. On a TV or phone, restarting the device is the practical equivalent of clearing stale app state; you can also force-close and reopen Netflix.
5. Reset network equipment
Netflix advises resetting the device’s network settings or restarting the modem/router when the apparent country is correct but the error remains. A reset can remove stale DNS or routing information, but it will not make unsupported live events or ad-supported viewing compatible.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
6. Test without the VPN
Disconnect Proton temporarily and try Netflix. If playback works normally without the VPN, the VPN address or Netflix’s detection is the likely cause. If it fails both ways, investigate the Netflix account, home network, device, or ISP instead of repeatedly changing VPN servers.
7. Escalate with useful details
If the problem persists, note the device and operating system, whether the account is ad-supported, the apparent country shown by Fast.com, and whether every server or only one server fails. Netflix directs customers to their ISP when network checks do not resolve the issue; Proton directs users to its streaming troubleshooting guidance and support.
Playback quality, speed, and data expectations
A VPN adds an extra routing step, so distance, server load, Wi-Fi quality, and the chosen protocol can affect buffering. The supplied official pages provide no measured speed test, latency figure, or success rate for Proton VPN with Netflix. Do not treat a fast result on one device or server as a guarantee for another.

- Use a regular server rather than Secure Core for streaming.
- Close other high-bandwidth downloads while diagnosing buffering.
- Compare playback with and without the VPN to separate a VPN-routing problem from an ordinary network problem.
- Remember that changing country can change the titles Netflix offers; a faster server is not useful if it produces the wrong catalog or a proxy block.
What Proton VPN cannot promise
- Every title in every country: licensing and Netflix’s VPN detection determine what appears.
- Permanent access from one IP address: Netflix may block a shared address after it has worked.
- Live-event playback: Netflix explicitly says VPNs are unsupported for live events.
- Ad-supported playback: Netflix also excludes ad-supported experiences from VPN support.
- A Free-plan solution: Proton says Free users can try, but free-server IP blocking is common and its streaming guide requires an upgrade for video streaming.
- A measured performance level: no official source cited here publishes a Proton Netflix speed benchmark or server-by-server pass rate.
Bottom line for different situations
| Your situation | Most realistic choice |
|---|---|
| You want ordinary Netflix viewing in your home country | Use a paid Proton plan, connect to a nearby regular server in your home country, then open Netflix. |
| You want to try a different country’s catalog | Connect to a paid-plan server in that country, but expect licensing limits or a VPN block; catalog switching is not guaranteed. |
| You have Proton Free | Expect frequent blocking; upgrading is Proton’s supported streaming route. |
| You see the proxy message | Check the plan and apparent country, reconnect to another same-country server, clear stale app/browser/DNS data, and reset network equipment if needed. |
| You need a live event or use an ad-supported Netflix experience | Do not rely on Proton VPN; Netflix says those VPN uses are unsupported. |
As of the October 2026 official guidance, Proton VPN is a plausible Netflix option on paid plans, not a universal unblocker. The dependable approach is to use a regular nearby server, keep expectations about catalogs realistic, and treat a proxy error as a connection-specific problem that may require another server or no VPN at all.
