PRISM supports streaming to YouTube, but its official materials reviewed do not promise that a stream will continue when you close your laptop’s lid. Closing it may trigger sleep or other power behavior that interrupts the stream. Test your exact laptop, OS, power settings, and PRISM setup before relying on it for a long broadcast.
What happens when you close the lid?
PRISM Live Studio can stream to YouTube from its desktop app. That does not mean PRISM controls what your laptop does when its lid closes. The result depends on the laptop model and operating-system power behavior. The official PRISM and YouTube materials reviewed do not specify one universal setting or hardware arrangement that makes closed-lid streaming work.

So the practical answer to “will my laptop keep streaming when I close it?” is: it might, if that laptop remains awake and continues running PRISM and its network connection; it might not, if closing the lid puts it to sleep or otherwise interrupts operation. Do not assume that an external monitor, dock, or cooling accessory is required—or that one will solve the problem—for every laptop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck whether your computer can handle the stream
PRISM lists Windows 10/11 64-bit and Apple Silicon macOS 12.3 or later among desktop compatibility requirements. These are compatibility details, not a guarantee of performance, closed-lid operation, or uninterrupted streaming.
#1 Best Overall

PRISM also warns that settings beyond a computer’s capabilities can cause performance problems. Encoder choice matters: software encoding can increase CPU load, while encoder-related settings can affect CPU and GPU load. PRISM’s performance guide says, “Since this function increases CPU and GPU load, we recommend limiting its usage.” Choose resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings the laptop can sustain rather than defaulting to the highest available values.
- Power: use reliable power for a long event and verify the laptop does not enter sleep or another power-saving state during the test.
- Thermals: check that the computer remains stable in the position you plan to use. A closed lid can change how a particular model handles heat, but the effect is model-specific.
- Processing headroom: watch PRISM and system performance at the chosen encoder settings. A setup that works briefly may still struggle over a long run.
- Network: use a stable upload connection and monitor the stream for interruptions and quality changes.
Test the closed-lid setup before a long broadcast
- Confirm platform compatibility. Check PRISM’s current desktop requirements for your operating system. The listed Windows and macOS versions establish compatibility only; they do not establish that your computer will keep running with the lid shut.
- Connect PRISM to YouTube. PRISM’s FAQ describes connecting a platform account or setting up a stream with RTMP details. Follow the current instructions in PRISM for your chosen method. Keep your YouTube stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Set conservative, sustainable video and encoder settings. Pick settings your computer and upload connection can maintain. Check CPU/GPU load and the resulting audio and video rather than assuming the maximum resolution or frame rate is suitable.
- Test with the lid in the intended position. Run a test stream under the same power and network conditions you plan to use for the event. Observe whether closing the lid changes the computer’s power state, stops PRISM, or disrupts the stream. If it fails, consult the current power guidance for your exact laptop model and operating system; there is no single documented PRISM setting that applies to all machines.
- Plan for monitoring and recovery. YouTube recommends testing the setup and continuously monitoring stream audio and video quality. For a long event, arrange for someone—or a suitable monitoring plan—to notice a failure and respond.
- Record locally if you need a complete replay. Check local recording growth during the test so you know whether the computer has enough available storage for the planned recording.
- End the broadcast cleanly. YouTube advises stopping the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Confirm the broadcast has ended before shutting down PRISM or the computer.
Will YouTube save a 24-hour livestream?
Not necessarily. YouTube Help says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” It also warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” That is an archive warning, not proof that a live stream must stop at 12 hours. If you need the entire 24-hour program preserved, make a local recording and check that it is growing during the event.
Common problems and what to check
- The stream stops after you close the lid: the laptop may have slept or changed its power behavior. Check the OS and manufacturer’s current power guidance for your exact model, then repeat the closed-lid test.
- PRISM becomes unstable or the stream quality degrades: reduce the load by choosing settings appropriate for the computer, and check CPU/GPU usage and network stability. PRISM cautions that settings beyond a computer’s capabilities can cause performance issues.
- The stream is live, but the archive is missing or incomplete: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use a local recording when a complete replay matters.
- The broadcast ends, but the encoder keeps running: verify that the event has stopped on YouTube, then stop the encoder as YouTube recommends.
- You do not know whether your laptop supports the intended setup: identify the exact model and OS and consult their current documentation. The reviewed PRISM and YouTube guidance does not settle lid behavior for an unspecified laptop.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel rather than streaming from this particular laptop, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video, supports quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo or start your free first day.
