A YouTube Premiere is a scheduled communal viewing of an uploaded video; when the video finishes, the Premiere ends and the video remains on your channel as a regular upload. For continuous prerecorded nature footage, use a scheduled YouTube live stream instead, while checking the platform’s current stream, archiving, and DVR behavior before promising uninterrupted availability.
What a YouTube Premiere does
A Premiere gives a newly uploaded video a shared, scheduled first viewing. You can share its public watch page before it starts, and viewers can set reminders and chat. When the countdown ends, viewers watch together. They can rewind during the Premiere, but they cannot skip ahead past what has been shown live. YouTube describes this format as a way to build anticipation and audience interaction around a video.

The event ends when the video finishes. The video then stays on the channel as a regular upload, and chat replay is available. YouTube states: “After your video premieres, it stays on your channel as a regular upload.” YouTube Help: Premiere a new video and YouTube premiere tips explain the format.

| Question | Premiere | Scheduled live stream |
|---|---|---|
| Best suited to | A scheduled, shared first viewing of one uploaded video | Broadcasting media in real time, including prerecorded footage sent as a live broadcast |
| What happens at the end? | The event ends when the uploaded video finishes; the video remains as a regular upload | The broadcast session ends according to how the stream is run; YouTube’s materials do not establish unlimited continuous playback |
| Relevant controls | Scheduled watch page, countdown, reminders, chat, and chat replay | Stream scheduling and configuration, including a stream key and stream URL for an encoder |
| Viewer rewind | Viewers can rewind during the Premiere but cannot skip ahead past what has been shown live | DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; this concerns viewer rewind, not a Premiere duration limit |
YouTube’s separate live-stream format is for media “broadcasted in real-time on YouTube.” See Learn about live streams, Manage live stream settings, and Turn on DVR on live streams.

How to choose and set up the right format
For one communal first viewing
- Upload the finished nature video to YouTube.
- Schedule it as a Premiere using YouTube’s Premiere options, then share the watch page so viewers can set reminders.
- Tell viewers it is a scheduled event, not an all-day continuous broadcast. The Premiere concludes when the video finishes.
For continuous prerecorded playback
- Use YouTube’s live-stream tools rather than Premiere scheduling. Create and schedule a live stream in YouTube Studio, reviewing the current stream settings and availability for your channel.
- Configure the broadcast and connect an encoder using the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube’s live-stream settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Set up the encoder or service to play your prerecorded footage as a live broadcast, and check the actual stream and archive behavior before advertising it as all-day or uninterrupted.
- Review YouTube’s current rules and settings for live streams, including copyright and the handling of archived video, before broadcasting footage you did not create or do not have rights to use.
YouTube’s official guidance does not establish a maximum Premiere duration or confirm that the same video can be scheduled as back-to-back Premieres. It also does not guarantee unlimited continuous live-stream playback. Do not treat the 12-hour DVR guidance as a Premiere cap: it is about whether viewers can rewind a very long live stream.
Premiere monetization
For eligible channels, pre-roll ads can run during a Premiere; mid-roll and post-roll ads are unavailable during it. Super Chat and Super Stickers may be enabled before and during a Premiere, subject to eligibility. See YouTube Help: Customize your Premiere.
