1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—PostgreSQL can power high-traffic applications and services used by millions of people. It scales especially well when reads dominate, connections are bounded, queries use effective indexes, statistics and vacuuming stay current, and read traffic is separated from writes. The difficult ceiling is usually sustained write throughput on one primary, not a simple count of registered users. PostgreSQL can scale beyond one machine with replicas, partitioning and, when necessary, distributed designs, but each step adds consistency, routing and operational trade-offs.
What “scaling PostgreSQL” actually means
Scale is not one number. A database may have to handle more requests per second, more simultaneous sessions, a larger data set, bigger bursts, stricter latency targets or stronger failure guarantees. Those pressures are related but require different remedies.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Connection scale: how many application requests can be served without exhausting database backends.
- Read scale: how many queries can be served, often by adding read-only standbys.
- Write scale: how much insert, update and delete work the authoritative primary can commit.
- Data scale: how large tables, indexes and retention windows can become while plans and maintenance remain predictable.
- Availability scale: how quickly the service can fail over and how much committed data it can lose or delay.
“Millions of users” does not map directly to a PostgreSQL limit. Most users are not issuing a query at the same instant, and one request can produce a trivial indexed lookup or an expensive join. Capacity depends on query shape, working-set size, indexes, CPU, storage, connection concurrency, replication mode and durability settings. The cited material publishes no universal users-per-server, queries-per-second or maximum-connection figure.

Why PostgreSQL can handle heavy traffic
A capable single primary is often the first step
A well-sized primary can serve a substantial workload when transactions are short, indexes match access patterns and storage keeps up with WAL and table activity. Vertical scaling—more CPU, memory and faster storage—often improves latency with less complexity than immediately distributing data. It also keeps transactions and reporting in one authoritative system.

The limit arrives when one machine cannot provide the required write throughput, storage capacity, maintenance window or failure objective. At that point, scale-out techniques should address the specific bottleneck rather than adding servers indiscriminately.
PostgreSQL is not limited to one machine
Streaming replication sends write-ahead-log (WAL) changes from a primary to standby servers. Standbys can provide failover and, when opened for read-only traffic, additional read capacity. A conventional primary/standby arrangement still concentrates writes on the primary; replicas do not automatically create a multi-writer database.
Connection pooling: the foundation of traffic handling
PostgreSQL uses a process-per-user connection model. Every active client connection consumes backend-process and memory resources, and idle sessions still occupy capacity. If a web application lets every request open its own database session, a traffic burst can spend resources on connection management before useful SQL runs.

Use an application pool or an external pooler such as PgBouncer so many short-lived requests share a smaller, bounded set of physical PostgreSQL connections. PostgreSQL community guidance notes that pooling reduces overhead when physical connections are the bottleneck; PostgREST documentation describes serving many HTTP requests with fewer database connections.

How to size and operate a pool
- Set a hard maximum for database connections rather than allowing unbounded session creation.
- Let excess requests queue briefly or be rejected with back-pressure; do not turn the database into an unlimited work queue.
- Keep transactions short and return connections to the pool immediately after commit or rollback.
- Separate pools for latency-sensitive web traffic, background jobs and analytics when one class could starve another.
- Monitor pool wait time, active sessions, idle sessions, transaction duration and database CPU together. A low database CPU reading with a long pool queue usually indicates connection or application contention, not a need for more replicas.
Pooling improves concurrency control; it does not make an expensive query cheaper. Prepared statements, session state and transaction-pooling modes also need to be checked for application compatibility.
Read replicas: the usual horizontal-read solution
Read replicas are most useful when the workload is read-heavy. Route cacheable catalog, search, timeline or reporting reads to standbys while writes and consistency-sensitive reads remain on the primary. This increases aggregate read capacity and provides a failover target without pretending that write capacity has multiplied.
Asynchronous replication
Streaming replication is asynchronous by default. A standby can trail the primary, so a user may write data and then immediately read from a replica that has not replayed that change. This is acceptable for workloads that tolerate replica lag. Applications can route a user’s post-write or session-critical reads to the primary, or use lag-aware routing.
Synchronous replication
Synchronous replication waits for confirmation from a configured standby before completing a commit. It can provide stronger durability, but commit latency rises and performance may fall when the network or standby is slow. Choose it when the durability objective justifies that latency; do not enable it solely because replicas exist.

Replication architecture comparison
| Architecture | Best fit | What it improves | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single primary | Moderate workload and simple operations | Predictable writes and transactions | One machine remains the capacity and failure boundary |
| Primary plus asynchronous standbys | Read-heavy traffic that tolerates lag | Read throughput and failover options | Stale reads are possible; writes still hit the primary |
| Primary plus synchronous standby | Higher durability requirements | Stronger commit confirmation | Additional commit latency and sensitivity to network health |
| Partitioned primary | Very large tables with predictable access or retention keys | Partition pruning and faster data lifecycle operations | More schema and planning complexity |
| Distributed or sharded PostgreSQL | Primary write, storage or single-node limits remain after optimization | Data and query work spread across servers | Routing, cross-shard queries, rebalancing and operations become harder |
A practical PostgreSQL scaling playbook
1. Bound concurrency before adding hardware
- Measure peak application concurrency, database sessions, pool waits and transaction duration.
- Set pool limits below the point where CPU, memory or I/O saturates.
- Add queueing and admission control so bursts do not create thousands of backend processes.
- Investigate long-idle-in-transaction sessions; they can retain locks and prevent cleanup even when they are not executing queries.
2. Inspect plans and indexes
Use EXPLAIN to see the planner’s chosen scan, join order, row estimates and, where applicable, partition pruning. Use EXPLAIN ANALYZE carefully on representative traffic because it executes the statement. PostgreSQL documentation identifies plan selection as central to good performance.
- Compare estimated and actual row counts; large differences indicate stale or insufficient statistics, data skew or predicates the planner cannot estimate well.
- Check whether a selective predicate uses an appropriate index rather than scanning a large table.
- Review join algorithms and the amount of data sorted, hashed or spilled to disk.
- Keep statistics current after substantial data changes and test plans with production-like volumes.
Do this work before adding replicas. Replicating an inefficient query simply distributes the inefficiency.
3. Add replicas for eligible reads
- Classify requests as write, read-after-write, strongly consistent read or lag-tolerant read.
- Send lag-tolerant reads to asynchronous standbys and consistency-sensitive reads to the primary.
- Track replay delay, WAL retention, errors and replica capacity.
- Test promotion and application failover, not just replication health. A standby that receives WAL but cannot accept traffic is not a complete availability plan.
4. Treat write scale as its own engineering problem
When write traffic is the bottleneck, first reduce the amount and cost of work:

- Batch independent operations where transaction semantics permit it.
- Move non-urgent work to queues and smooth bursts with rate limits.
- Shorten transactions and eliminate unnecessary lock contention.
- Archive or delete data according to a deliberate retention policy rather than allowing unbounded table growth.
OpenAI’s engineering case study, titled “800 million ChatGPT users” (2026), states: “Although PostgreSQL scales well for our read-heavy workloads, we still encounter challenges during periods of high write traffic.” The observation illustrates why user count alone cannot predict capacity.

5. Partition very large tables deliberately
PostgreSQL supports range, list and hash partitioning. Partition by a key that appears in common WHERE clauses so the planner can eliminate irrelevant partitions. Time-based range partitions are useful for event or log data; list partitions can separate tenants or regions; hash partitions can spread rows when no natural range exists.
- Performance: queries touching a small slice of a large table can scan fewer pages when partition pruning works.
- Retention: detaching or dropping an old partition can be much faster than deleting its rows individually.
- Operational cost: every partition adds planning and per-session memory overhead. Excessive partition counts can make planning slower rather than faster.
Partitioning is not automatic sharding. Partitions normally remain within the same PostgreSQL system and do not make a write-heavy workload multi-primary.
6. Keep vacuum, autovacuum and indexes healthy
Updates and deletes leave dead tuples until VACUUM processes them. Frequently updated tables therefore need effective autovacuum settings and monitoring. Delayed cleanup can increase table and index bloat, add I/O and make scans slower. Index cleanup that is skipped or unable to keep up can also degrade performance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Watch dead-tuple estimates, autovacuum runs, vacuum duration and tables approaching transaction-ID or multixact-age limits.
- Give hot tables per-table autovacuum settings when the global default is not responsive enough.
- Investigate blocked or long-running transactions that prevent cleanup.
- Revisit indexes that are unused, duplicated or expensive to maintain during heavy writes.
7. Consider sharding only after simpler limits are understood
Distributed PostgreSQL approaches, including technologies documented by the PostgreSQL community such as Citus, can shard or replicate tables across servers and parallelize queries. They also introduce a data-placement key, request routing, cross-shard query behavior, rebalancing and more failure modes.
Best Value
Sharding becomes reasonable when query and workload optimization, pooling, stronger hardware, partitioning and read replicas still leave a primary write, storage or single-node limit. A stable tenant, customer or account key can make placement and routing practical; workloads that frequently join or transact across all keys are harder to distribute.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does PostgreSQL scale horizontally?
Yes, but “horizontally” has several meanings. Read replicas add machines for read capacity and failover. Partitioning divides a logical table into manageable pieces, usually without distributing writes across independent primaries. Sharding distributes data and work across nodes, but requires an architecture designed for it. None of these removes the need to manage a write authority, replication lag, transaction boundaries and operational recovery.
How many concurrent connections can PostgreSQL handle?
There is no safe universal number. The practical limit depends on memory per backend, query complexity, CPU, storage latency, operating-system limits and how much concurrency the workload can use efficiently. Raising the connection limit can make an overloaded system worse because more processes compete for the same resources. Measure active work and pool wait time, then bound connections so the database spends its capacity executing useful queries.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Requests queue while database CPU is modest | Pool is exhausted, sessions are idle or transactions are held open | Inspect pool waits and session states; cap connections and fix transaction lifetime |
| Reads are fast on the primary but stale on a replica | Asynchronous replay lag | Route read-after-write operations to the primary or use lag-aware routing |
| Commit latency rises after enabling synchronous replication | Standby or network acknowledgement delay | Measure standby and network health; confirm the durability requirement |
| Queries become slower as a table grows | Plan regression, missing statistics, unsuitable indexes or table/index bloat | Review EXPLAIN, refresh statistics and inspect vacuum and index health |
| Partitioned queries still scan many partitions | Predicates do not constrain the partition key or partition count is excessive | Align queries with the partition key and simplify the partition layout |
| Writes remain saturated after read replicas are added | Replicas do not distribute primary writes | Reduce and batch writes, smooth bursts, partition appropriately or evaluate sharding |
Choosing the right architecture
| Workload signal | Recommended next move | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Moderate traffic; simplicity is the priority | One well-sized primary with disciplined pooling and maintenance | Lowest operational complexity and straightforward transactions |
| Connection setup or session count is the bottleneck | Application pooling or PgBouncer with admission control | Many requests share fewer backend processes |
| Reads dominate and some staleness is acceptable | Asynchronous read replicas with explicit routing | Adds read capacity while preserving one write authority |
| Durability objective requires standby acknowledgement | Synchronous replication, tested against latency goals | Stronger commit confirmation at a performance cost |
| Tables are huge and have clear locality or retention boundaries | Range, list or hash partitioning | Enables pruning and efficient lifecycle operations |
| Primary write, storage or single-node limits persist after optimization | Distributed PostgreSQL or sharding | Distributes data and work, accepting substantial complexity |
Bottom line for “millions of users”
PostgreSQL is a credible foundation for a high-traffic website or service. Start by measuring the real workload, bounding connections, fixing plans and indexes, and keeping vacuum and statistics healthy. Add asynchronous replicas for lag-tolerant reads, use synchronous replication only when its durability benefit outweighs latency, and partition large tables when pruning and retention justify the design. Treat write-heavy growth separately; if a primary still cannot meet the target after reducing work and improving transactions, then evaluate distributed PostgreSQL or sharding with a clear data-placement strategy. There is no honest one-line maximum user count—the architecture and workload determine the limit.
