Sometimes. A blocked-call display usually means your phone does not show the caller’s number; it does not necessarily mean the number was erased from the network. In the United States, carriers generally transmit calling-party information between providers while honoring the privacy setting that hides it from the recipient. Police may be able to obtain restricted information in a threatening-call investigation, but there is no public lookup or guarantee that every call can be traced.
What “blocked” means—and what it does not
Caller-ID blocking hides the calling number or name from the person receiving the call. Under 47 CFR §64.1601, carriers and interconnected VoIP providers generally transmit calling-party information along the call path while honoring the privacy indicator that keeps it from the recipient. The display being blank or marked “private” therefore does not establish that no provider information exists.

That distinction does not mean police can instantly identify a caller or that a carrier must disclose a number to you. What information exists, who holds it, and what may be disclosed depend on the call, provider, records sought, applicable process, and jurisdiction.
When can law enforcement get information about a threatening blocked call?
Federal rules provide a specific route for threatening calls. Under 47 CFR §64.1601(f), when law enforcement reports a threatening call on behalf of the threatened party, the carrier provides restricted calling-party number information to law enforcement. At law enforcement’s direction, the information may also go to security personnel responsible for the threatened entity’s safety.

This is a limited investigative exception, not a customer-facing caller-ID service. The rule restricts receipt and access to investigating threatening and serious calls and requires documentation and safeguards for the information, including secure destruction after a reasonable retention period. A recipient should report the threat to law enforcement rather than expect the carrier to disclose a blocked number directly.
What should you do after a blocked threatening call?
If there is an immediate danger
Contact emergency services if a call indicates an immediate or life-threatening danger. Do not wait for a carrier trace or a non-emergency report. Xfinity gives this guidance to its Voice customers, but the appropriate emergency response is not dependent on using Xfinity.

If the call is harassing but not an emergency
- Contact local law enforcement through its non-emergency channel and explain that the call was blocked and what was said.
- Keep the call time, date, any voicemail or message, and relevant context. This can help you describe the incident; it does not itself identify the caller.
- Ask your carrier whether it offers a call-trace procedure, when it must be activated, and what information it sends to law enforcement. Do not assume a code or feature works across providers.
Does *57 trace a blocked call?
It depends on the phone service. Xfinity says its Voice customers can hang up, wait 10 seconds, and dial *57 after a harassing call. Its instructions say the trace applies only to the last incoming call, not every trace succeeds, and the customer should make the appropriate police report and provide the report details to Xfinity’s law-enforcement/subscriber-record center. The process sends a report through the provider’s procedure; it is not a promise to reveal the caller’s number to the customer. See Xfinity’s Call Trace instructions for that service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThose steps are specific to Xfinity Voice. Other landline, mobile, and VoIP providers may not offer the same feature or may use different instructions. Check your provider’s current guidance before dialing a code; a feature may only capture the most recent call or may not succeed.

Does every police request require the same legal process?
No. The special rule for threatening calls is not the same thing as every government request for provider records. 18 U.S.C. §2703 distinguishes communications content from non-content records and specifies different procedures depending on the type of information and circumstances. Its provisions include warrants, court orders, consent, and certain subpoenas or written requests. It is inaccurate to claim that every call-related record always requires a warrant—or that police can obtain all records without legal process.
Can a trace prove who actually placed the call?
Not necessarily. Caller-ID blocking and caller-ID spoofing are different. Blocking lawfully withholds caller-ID information from the recipient. Spoofing involves transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller-ID information; federal rules prohibit knowingly doing so with intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain value, subject to exceptions for lawfully authorized investigative, protective, or intelligence activity and court-authorized manipulation. See 47 CFR §64.1604.

A provider trace may produce network or account information, but that alone does not necessarily prove the real-world identity of the person who placed the call. The applicable investigation and evidence determine what can be established.

What a blocked-call trace can and cannot tell you
- It can: give law enforcement a route to seek restricted calling-party information in a qualifying threatening-call situation, or pass a provider trace report through a service-specific process.
- It cannot promise: that every blocked call is traceable, that a trace will succeed, that you will receive the number, or that the information alone proves who made the call.
- It is not: a public reverse-lookup service or a universal *57 procedure.
This explanation is U.S.-focused. The cited federal regulations and statute do not establish the procedures in other countries, and state law, emergency circumstances, provider systems, and the records sought can affect a particular case.
